NUFCBLOG POLL: Choose Best Right Back for Newcastle

3:00 am, Monday, August 20th, 2007 by Ed Harrison · 17 Comments

We ran an article yesterday highlighting four right-backs that Sam could bring into the squad in the next 11 days of the transfer window.

Included were three foreign players and two English players.

Today we run our first poll (hopefully of many) where we ask you to vote on whom you think would be the best right-back Sam can buy based on the original four from yesterday, plus Leroy Rosenior, who now seems to be available from Fulham.

The five players are Juliano Belletti of Barcelona, Phil Neville of Everton, Jose Bosingwa of FC Porto, Cicinho of Real Madrid and Leroy Rosenior of Fulham.

Please register your vote below and we’ll look at the results tomorrow – thanks.

I dont believe the people who voted actually believe Beletti is the better back for us, just with the press coming out that we will possibly sign him has swayed their way of thinking. Howay the lads

Chris i think your definitely right, granted Beletti is a very talented player and we all saw him assist in the goal that took the champions league away from the goooners a few years back but imo hes pretty old now and i think will lack that pace that we’ve seen fail Carr a number of times already this season. Honestly though out of the five touted on the list above i would probably still place him 2nd or 3rd from the top. I can’t stand the Neville brothers and i have no desire to see the bigger bag of sh*t out of the two donning the black and white ever. Cicinho is a great player going forward but he is often caught slipping at the back and one thing we are going to need more than ever is solidarity on the wings so i would greet this signing with a very mixed view. The guy i would love to see join is Bosingwa however with the 10 million being touted around for his services at the moment i don’t see this one happening at all and to be honest if that money was going to be spent id much rather see it go on a creative player in the centre mid role as its something we clearly lacked against villa. If it came down to it id rather we just tie up Beletti because one thing i think we all agree on is that Stephen Carr needs to be replaced and now so here’s to hoping….

At the moment we only can attract the kind of “second rates” player to play for Toon which is making me sick of it, but after we have made some real challenging to any trophies both domestic and european leagues (Champions or UEFA Cup) , and…(if only) Mike Ashley willing to back-up Allardyce with significant funds, we can start to buy any good players in the world!

    HOWAY THE LADS!!!

Patience for this year with the board/management/squad finding its feet…….qualify for europe would be nice but last year we would have lost that game 1-0. No doubt we missed a player like Barton yesterday but at least we know that this Manager is achieving best possible signings without the offer of Europe….looking up for the future……we are on the right track :)

Chris – think you’re right – it does look like Sam is after Belletti – but he’ll make us a better team – Carr’s first half performance on Saturday was not good. Don’t expect Stephen feels too good right now about his future at Newcastle and wouldn’t be surprised if he wants away should we bring Belletti in – also wonder if Sam may play Faye at RB?.

Shearyadi – don’t worry – things will get better – this first season is consolidation and if we can make top 6 or even top 8 that would allow us to bring in classier players next summer. We’re not too bad off for the squad right now – apart from RB. But we could always play Taylor there as emergency for next Sunday and bring Cacapa in at CB..

Think you’ll find it’s liam – leroy is his dad!! Not good enough for newcastle though

    beletti

What about Glen Johnson? So far Chelsea have played all of Ferreira, SWP and Essien ahead of him. He had a good loan spell at Pompey and is a good young english option which I would prefer to Belletti. He definitely has pace and his a good size for a full back.

Cicihno is the best one there but we wont get him. I’m sure he’s close to signing for Roma aswell….

i voted for Cicinho but as soon as i did i thought Boswinga would be a much better signing for us!!

phil neville is definately the most suitable, he s got a whole life of premiership experience and he s developing into a leader but the most LIKELY one looks to be belletti. im wonderin if people are getteing confused between the actual best in footballing terms or the one that looks more realistic to go through

Without any doubt Belletti. Played 2 years ago in the best team of Europe. Was not only 1 of the 11, but was 1 of the most interesting to watch. Attacked consistently and defended well. Good bid by BS, hope he will be in black and white by tomorrow.

Cicinho is not that good in defending, though a good attacking option.

Neville and Johnson are 2 players which IMO are way overrated. So no for me.

Bosingwa; good alternative if Belletti deal fails, but I think he is not worth £12m.

Belletti get him now!! And don’t be put off by his age because he still is faster and more effective than Carr.

  • 15 iain // Aug 20, 2007 at 4:29 PM

i voted for bosingwa as he has every thing a good fb needs, pace/power/height/technical ability.

although he is by far the most expensive and even overpriced by porto. although with 1yr on his deal who knows there may be a chance of getting him next year.

belletti would be a very good signing for us simply becuase hes a lot better than carr, belletti aint the greatest defender ive seen, but his pace and ability going forward will surely help us avoid dour performances lke the one vs villa.

cicinho is a terrible defender, if not for the want of trying hes just too small for a pl full back and plays more like a winger than a fb, he gets muscled off the ball too easily in the spanish league, so i cant see him cutting it in england.

phil neville is solid but must be the least technically capable out the list of players mentioned, and we need fb that can support our attacks when needed, something i dont think he can do.

Chidi Odiah FFS! He is the perfect solution.

  • 17 Ahmed Bilal // Aug 20, 2007 at 11:36 PM

Beletti gets so many votes because he’s the first name on the list. That, and because he’s from Barcelona :)
