Faye Will Be Last Player Sam Signs in August

The transfer of Abdoulaye Faye has been dragging on now for about a week, when each day we are hoping the Newcastle will sign the Bolton player.

It has already been reported that Faye has turned down an improved contract offer that would have almost tripled his current ₤7K/week wages. So it’s clear that Faye does not see his future at the Lancashire club.

But can we get him to Newcastle before the transfer window closes?

Abdoulaye Faye – still on his way to Newcastle?

Reports coming in yesterday suggested the hold-up was on the Newcastle end of the transfer with Newcastle haggling with Bolton over the ₤2M fee. Reports even suggested that Bolton may pull out of the negotiations.

While we don’t know the details of what exactly the disagreement is about – from a fans viewpoint – it seems rather strange we are not willing to pay ₤2M for Faye – who is exactly the type of defender to improve our squad. Maybe Faye will not be a starter in the back four but he can also play in defensive midfield and is a proven performer in the Premiership.

Sam is hoping he can bring in at least one new player before the transfer window slams shut on August 31st and this is what he had to say yesterday on the transfer situation at Newcastle:

“Sadly there’s no movement on the transfer front at the moment. I’m just hoping we’ll get one in this week and I’ll keep hoping.”

“But I’m very happy with the squad we’ve got. “

“The concern is the international players going away and then coming back without any injuries, but of course it’ll be good to see Jose Enrique getting fitter, Michael Owen playing for England and Emre getting some match practice for Turkey.”

“Hopefully they’ll come back fitter and adding to the strength in depth of the squad.”

“That’ll be very good, we’re moving forward OK and come Friday we want to have as big a squad available for Middlesbrough.”

We think it would be good to get Faye in – as quickly as we can – but the surprising thing is that Sam is not going after a right back. We may be short in that position – especially if Nobby Solano leaves us. There has been news we are after Juliano Belletti of Barcelona for a fee of around ₤3M, which seems reasonable, and there has been talk about actual terms being agreed with the player at around ₤40K/week.

However, while we suspect something is going on with Belletti, it may be that we don’t get him in before the end of August, although we’d like to see him in the squad. We can only think that with Faye coming in would allow Geremi to move to right-back so our back four would be something like:

Geremi Taylor Rozehnal Enrique

But exactly who Cacapa displaces to make the team is anyone’s guess. A good end to the transfer window would be to get both Faye and Belletti at the club for a total of ₤5M – then at least our defense will have strength in depth and we can move on from there.

We’ll have a topic of the day with our new Newcastle United Forum and we’ve started one associated with this discussion What’s Newcastle Best Back Four?

I expect Faye to arrive on Tyneside, but only at the right price, say £1M plus maximum.

Newcastle should not throw money at so called footballers in the last week of the transfer window due to a failure to use the entire transfer window. All credit to Ashley, Mort and BSA for bringing in good quality players this summer. Well done guys!

Hopefully, we’ll sign at least 3 players before end of this month; say Faye, Diop and a RB? (Micah Richards was excellent last night but doubt we’ll see him in a black and white strip this season……)

I reckon the players we have now will see us into a uefa cup spot at least. When that happens we should see some exciting players coming through the doors of st james’s.I cant see any major signings being made now that will significantly change our season.

wish mike ashley would realise how buying micah richards now from man city would be a good piece of business even if it costs alot of money. this guy is class and with him and taylor at the back it would be awesome.

In the current market a young English player of Richards talent and potential would cost upwards of £15m. I don’t think there’s any danger of NUFC parting company with that sort of money.

£2m for Faye seems much more sensible and realistic. I’m not sure why we’re messing around on this one – that sort of money can easily be recouped with a decent cup run – which will only be achievable with strength and depth in what has always been a pretty weak defence.

BTW; apparently Chelsea have now moved in for Belletti. First Ben Haim, now this guy. We need to move faster guys – come on!!!

I still think we need a couple more players by the end of next week. I will be more gutted about not getting Beletti than Faye. Are there any other options available other than Beletti. Would not mind that Pander at St James! Pardon the pun Pander will look good in Black and White!!!

@Adam – I don’t think even £25m would get you Richards, they don’t exactly need to sell do they with all that dodgy new money siphoned off from the far east? He wouldn’t come anyway.

faye would be an alright alternative to carr at rb, esp away from home when the focus is one defending, or he could play cm and geremi could play rb.

but if as reported we are missing out on an attacking rb in belletti, it makes the need for a creative mf player even more important, maybe it doesnt have to be a cm but perhaps someone like diouf who can play wide in the 433 formation as imo only really milner/luque will be any good wide in that formation, owen/martins will be tottally useless playing there and even if they are happy know a full season playin wide in 433 will see them looking for a move as its a waste of their talents.

@iain: I don’t think Faye is a RB, so I think he will come to push Butt out of the team because our central defence looks very solid at this moment. And Cacapa will be in the team in no time and then it hink Taylor will be played as our RB untill the January. I just can’t see that Taylor keeps Rozehnal and Cacap out of the team, because those two are just better now. Taylor will be at his best in 2 or 3 years and then he will proove to be one of the best defenders in the EPL.
