Major Newcastle News Stories – 23rd August – 2007

Not much news that we’d like to hear today as the Abdoulaye Faye saga drags on and apparently Newcastle and Bolton can’t agree on the structure of a deal for the Bolton defender.

Sam also says he’ll probably sign one more player before the end of the tranfer window and we expect this to be Faye – but hope seems to be fading that we’ll also sign Belletti from Barcelona. However, Sky News is reporting Chelsea have switched their attentions to Juliano Belletti and away from Daniel Alves, as they look for another right back. Belletti is said to be in London undergoing a medical. Newcastle just haven’t been quick enough in capturing Belletti.

Other news is that Newcastle today announced a new third strip of white and pale blue – modeled by new boy – Jose Enrique – it looks good and so does Jose.

To get out new Newcastle United Forum up to speed we will be announcing a Topic of the Day. Today’s topic is What’s Newcastle’s Best Back Four Combination.

Please feel free to visit the Forum and register – and enjoy your time on our expanded site.

  • Here’s the launch of our brand new Newcastle United Forum from yesterday. We invite you to go and register, introduce yourself, and get involved with the posts or create a new post yourself. Obviously we’ll have one for each game – both before and after – so we can all discuss what’s going on. We also have out first topic of the day on the forum.
  • We have put together a piece on six creative midfielders for Newcastle and asked you to vote on who would be best at Newcastle if Sam wanted to improve his midfield creativity. We have over 900 votes but we are leaving it open until tomorrow so if you haven’t read the article or haven’t voted please do before tomorrow around this time when we’ll announce the results. We have not put transfer prices on the players except Deco and Riquelme, because we really don’t know how much they would be worth in this market – and we’d just be arguing about the price in any case. For this vote just pick the player based on skill and experience. We currently have over 900 votes clocked in. The midfielders are Deco, Riquelme, Nakamura, Nolan. Kallstrom and Van der Vaart.
    van-der-vaart.jpg

Van der Vaart – one of six attacking midfielders featured

  • We have a piece on what Sam sees with the transfer market right now. The transfer market seems to be bogged down for us right now with the Faye transfer still held up because Bolton and Newcastle cannot agree on the deal. We had been hoping we could get Belletti in before 31st August, but Sam says he only expects one new player in before then. It also looks like Chelsea will capture Belletti. We expect that to be Faye, but we’d like both in by then.
    abdoulaye-faye-ye_556649.jpg

Abdoulaye Faye – only new player to move to Newcastle before end of transfer window?

  • We have a piece on 20 year-old David Edgar who was in the full Canada squad last night for the game against Iceland but didn’t make an appearance. We think our youngsters at the club are very important – and certainly they are the future. We take a look at David – who captained the Canada Under-20s in the World Under-20 Championships held in Canada during the summer. We believe David should be sent out on loan so he can further develop his skills and gain the necessary experience so he can challenge for a first team spot at Newcastle.
    david-edgar-2.jpg

20 year-old David Edgar– will he be sent out on loan this season?

  • Another article on the long running saga of Oba Martins and his £13M buy out clause. We don’t think Manchester United will bid for Oba and Sam confirms nobody has bid for either Michael Owen or Oba Martins this summer. That’s despite all the newspaper talk that keeps cropping up about it. We’ll be so pleased when August 31st comes and goes and this nonsense stops.
    oba-martins_obafemi_nufc_profile_2007.jpg

Oba Martins– staying at Newcastle United

  • Newcastle have a new third strip introduced today. Exactly why that’s the case since we are not in Europe is only because the club probably needs the money. We like the new strip which is white and pale blue and modeled by Jose Enrique. However, initial comments from our readers aren’t so positive.
    jose-enriqeue-gh34.gif

Jose Enrique– looking bored but we think the strip and Jose look good

  • Finally here’s some choice football quotes – to lighten up the day 😀

“It’s the only way we can lose, irrespective of the result.” – Graham Taylor

“It’s a game we’ve got to win. It’s also a game we’ve not got to lose.” – Graham Taylor

“Well, either side could win it, or it could be a draw.” – Ron Atkinson

We always appreciate your comments on our Daily Update.

new strip -yuuuuuuuuk. minging, disguisting. worse than our away kit, hope we never play in it.

as for transfers ive lost faith we will sign anyone, not sure what Big Sam and the executives are playing at but since Alan Smith signed they have been doing very poorly in my eyes (in the transfer market).

and as for Belleti going to Chelsea, i believe that was if Alves doesnt move, but now that Robben has just signed for Real the press say Chelsea will sign Alves and i cant see them signing both Belleti & Alves.

bah, ive given up on following the transfer gossip 99.9999% of it is all rubbish.

As for Faye, hell give us depth nothing more. we should be aiming higher in my eyes.

as youve probably realised the normal feeling of dissapointment and gloom is starting to return to our club.

Very Argentina the strip – if we can play like them, well,…wow.
Perhaps Riquelme will now join us?

As for only one more signing – I’m not so sure. BS may well be playing with words a little.
It was only last week he was saying that if a player became available and we wanted him, we’d be straight in for him. A lot can happen, even on the last day of the transfer period.
Don’t be suprised if in come Faye, Balletti and either Deco or Riquelme.

and as for Oba, ill be happy when he signs a new contract but dont be fooled if that will stop the press still engineering pointless rubbish about him moving to ‘bigger’ teams for a pint of guiness & a packet of crisps.

Edd Case, as much as i want to believe you i think your living in a dream if you think Deco or Riquelme will sign for us.

i just have the feeling either Sam or the executives dont have the will to push for a deal with big guns like that.

maybe im just getting to cynical.

I think Belletti is a no go now, he’s off to Chelski. Riquelme is looking Spurs bound too. I really hope we replace Nobby should he leave, and if reports are true that Deco is available at £6m then we should sign him!

That kit is fit, so is our away and home!

Odiah or Rafinha for RB, Rafinha may be a bit weak for the prem but he has a great tackle etc.

Did anyone see Corluka play at right back for Man City at the weekend? Big and strong, good tackler, good header, good reader of the game, good one on one against attackers and not phased by anything.

How come we didn’t know about him I wonder (Sven obviously did)

RICH – are you out there?

You mocked when I said our net spending this season would be around the £10m mark. I may be jumping the gun but so far we have a net spend of £7m with a possible £2m extra on Faye if we get him.

Everyone is saying that will be us finished spending so feel free to admit you were way out with your estimates of £30m +.

Anyone else think that the new third kit is a result of the suggeted kit on here? As it has the blue and white stripes but the design ties in with the away kit. I think I’ll get this one instead of the away one as it is much nicer.

I think our lack of spending is more to do with the top/expensive players we have been in for not coming rather than no money. I think if we can get a RB before deadline day we will be strong enough for europe and in Jan if we are in a good position that will help attract better players and if we get in next summer will see us able to improve the squad with high calibre players.

When I stated our spending would be around the £10M mark I wasn’t suggesting we were skint, our debt is nothing compared to some clubs. I was saying that until Ashley/Mort had a good look at the club & the way it is run they wouldn’t be out spending millions on players, it is just common sense.

Others (Rich) expected £20m signings straight away.

ive seen rafinha play, he isnt quick bu he can hold the defence at rb. i wouldn lik him at newcastle tho players like giggs and pederson would walk past him, not to mention joe cole. we need sum1 who is quick and strong at rb and the only 1s id lik wouldn come to newcastle. so we’ll have to settle for an average/good rb till we climb the table and then maybe more players would be willin to come. perhaps we should look for talent in the championship because there are sum good players there.

You obviously didnt read my half essay on why people who judge on FM07 and Fifa are complete Numbties.

I have seen both of these players and read many articles. If i was going to say a Rb for the Toon i would come up with some brilliant Rb who is brilliant on those games, not two good RB’s whjo are under-rated and kind of undiscovered.

Frankly, I am pissed we haven’t signed a right back. There’s no excuse, really. We should have signed Belletti. I don’t know why Big Sam isn’t being more liberal in the transfer market. We have plenty of funds! The only rational explanation I can think of is that maybe BS is holding out for a large signing, but I really can’t see the likes of Deco or Riquelme being lured to St. James’ Park. Van der Vaart is staying at Hamburg and I don’t think Celtic’s Nakamura is good enough.

Well, either way, I don’t think we need to find another midfielder. Barton and Emre should fill in quite nicely and fill the void of creativity we are currently lacking. When Emre and Barton are at their best, they are fantastic. When that will be, however, is the only catch.

By the way, I still say Miguel is the ideal choice at RB. Who cares if he’s too much? BS has been stingy in his deals this summer, and I think Ashley should take a hint that maybe he has a manager with his head on his shoulders and one that won’t frivilously sign players. Why not shell out a large fee for a spot where Newcastle have lacked quality in recent years?

Evan, i dont use it they just speculate that i do simply becuase i have alot more football knowledge than them 🙂

Yes Miguel is good, im a Portugal supporter and he is our first choice, Bosingwa will never catch up to him.

I still think people should start taking notice of Odiah, maybe not Refinha as he is probably not storng enough for the premiership.

Id say Chidi Odiah is exactly what we need.

Darren – but I think Sam’s done just great with 10M net spend. For once we have a manager who can do good deals for us. The squad is vastly improved from May when he came in. It’s going to get harder now for Sam to take us the next step up – in January or next summer – but he should have more to spend. I’m personally delighted with his buys. Now we have to beat the Boro on Sunday who seem to be struggling. If we can win that will excuse the draw against Villa 😀

Odiah would be nice but as BSA wants prem experience etc go for Ferreira, he is quality but inconsistent, evne on his bad days he is about 8 times better than Carr and on his good days he is one of the best 🙂

Not sure if they will sell him.

Miguel, Ferriera or Odiah would be nice

    Narrowed it down:

Miguel – Very good but to expensive. (16 mil)
Ferreira – Good but inconsistent, dont think Chelsea will sell. He will be back up. Huge wage packet.
Rafinha – Maybe to weak for the prem and very expensive and he is named Schalkes MVP by their manager.

Odiah is the perfect solution. If anyone is paying attention to this you should read up on him.

    @Darren –

i didnt say we were going to spend 30 million i said we could, i was just re-iterarating what our chairman said and he has said we have more than 10million to spend, and if you rmemeber i posted links to his commens on the official NUFC website so if youve got any gripes bring them up with him, i was jut towing the official party line.

im just frickn annoyed that our executives dont seem to have a clue, their excuse before was that the right players werent available but we all know for a fact that players like Cicinho, Boswinga, Riquelme, Deco, Diouf etc.. ARE ALL AVAILABLE. so im staring to loose faith in Chris Mort and his band of no-transfer policy muppets.

i still think we have more than 10 mil because its only propaganda rags like the sun that are saying we dont and our chairman is saying we do, so i believe that it comes down to the fact that the guys in charge at our club dont have a clue about how to sign players unlike our last lot who for all their problems managed to bring in players like Duff, Emre, Owen, Martins etc…

i wont be suprised if we dont sign anyone before next week and i blame the execuitives for dragging their feet for the past 2 months.

    🙁
