Major Newcastle News Stories – 28th August – 2007

The good news today for Newcastle fans is that Sammy Lee has said that he will no longer stand in the way of letting Abdoulaye Faye leave for Newcastle, and the transfer is expected to go through imminently.

A fee was agreed over the weekend between the two clubs and the other items that were holding up the transfer – whatever they were – have been ironed out. We’ll wait to hear a confirmation of Faye’s signing on the Official Newcastle United web-site.

Big Sam is also looking for a new right-back after losing both Stephen Carr (hamstring strain) and Peter Ramage (knee ligaments) to injuries against Middlesbrough. Carr will be out anywhere from 2-6 weeks depending on the severity of the strain, but Peter may be sidelined for months – the knee is too sore to assess the damage at the moment.

We really have no idea who Sam will be after for right-back in the next three days – so we’ll just have to wait and see on that one.

  • We take a look at which players Sam may be bringing in this week. We know he’s been after Bolton’s Faye for a while but he is also looking for a new right-back as cover for Carr and Ramage. Carr’s injury will last anywhere from 2-6 weeks but it appears that Ramage’s knee injury may be a lot worse. There are several players we look at that Sam may be interested in, but he will need to move quickly.

  • Steven Taylor has been talking to the Newcastle Journal today and we feature what he says in another article. Looks like Steven welcomes the new players at Newcastle. Steven thinks Sam has brought in a lot of class and the squad now has only players who want to be at Newcastle. They also appear ready to support each other. That’s great to hear and although the last two results haven’t been all we wanted, you cannot criticize the level of effort seen from the team.

  • It appears there is really good news this morning on the Abdoulaye Faye protracted transfer that seems to have dragged on for months. Sammy Lee, Bolton’s manager, has said he will no longer stand in the way of allowing Faye to move to Newcastle – and also has some good things to say about the Senegalese. seems that Lee wanted to keep Faye at Bolton so he cannot be blamed for that. But it shows us that Faye can be a vital player at Newcastle, not least because he is aware of Sam’s methods and wants to play again for the big man.

  • Some news never seems to end – and it’s like beating a dead horse at times. The newspapers today are still trying to get people to believe that Arsenal will sign Oba Martins. This time they are quoting a fee of ₤9M, because they say Newcastle are desperate to bring in new defenders following the injuries to Ramage and Carr. That this means no sense at all – since Newcastle can just turn down the offer because of Oba’s ₤13M release clause – doesn’t seem to stop this rubbish, which is really what it is. Seems like logic has no place in football during the last 3 days of the transfer window. Wonder if we’ll hear that Owen is moving on again? 😀

  • Turns out that our site has been nominated for ‘Best Sports Blog’ as part of the Bloggers Choice Awards. If you would like to vote for us you can do so here. Ahmed Bilal’s site SoccerLens was also nominated and you can vote for Ahmed’s site here. I don’t know too much about these awards to be honest but I did notice Ahmed’s site has more votes than we do 😀
  • We’ll have our Newcastle vs Barnsley match preview tomorrow morning – but until then let’s have your opinions on the game and anticipated result on our match review piece in our Newcastle United Forum.
  • Finally here’s some choice football quotes – to lighten up the day 😀

“No money in the world can buy a white England shirt.” – Alan Shearer

“If Glenn Hoddle said one word to his team at half time, it was concentration and focus.” – Ron Atkinson

“I’ve had this sneaking feeling throughout the game that it’s there to be won” – Ron Atkinson

i think faye will be used at right back instead of centre back. i have seen big sam use this before at his time at Bolton so i think that faye will be our new right back so i think that this signing will be the last for this deadline!Newcastle 4-0 Barnsley!!!

Has Faye played RB before? – because until last year he played defensive midfield.

@ ed harrison -yes faye played RB on a number of occasions when injuries and suspensions hit Bolton so faye was used at right back. hes got good speed and a good tackle and is also very strong so i think he could be a very good right back!

Personally I think BSA is looking for an out and out RB specialist. He picked up Enrique, and will no doubt pick up a RB as well, if one is available. I’m unsure of Glen Johnsen, he just can’t tackle. Diarra did impress at RB, buty thats not his natural position. Again, finding RB’s in the BSA mould may prove difficult, and Taylor or Faye may play there as stop gaps. But it’s not a long term solution. But remember, we do have Edgar waiting in the wings, who has shown he can play across the back 4. I like him, as he’s an alround good footballer, so he may get his chance.

Faye will make good RB ,as i also saw him play there 4 bolton last season. Also get diarra or diop ,and with emre and barton coming back i cant see us signing the BIG NAME creative midfielder.

toonfan1 – so it looks like Sam has a good choice for RB – Geremi, Faye, Solano, Taylor and Carr. Kash – I like Edgar as well – we need to send Edgar or Huntington out on loan or they’re not going to get a game. But it’s more likely now with Ramage out probably for a few months.

i have said it before and ill say it again…. Alves for RB…. BSA wanted a frivolous ‘galactico’ signing once the team was sorted… now is that time.. £27 mil and hes ours…. would bring our spending to £35 mil in the window… now surely MA can afford that. hahahaha 😛

how come everyone says alves for newcastle. we stand no chance of getting him so get real guys. we’re not even in europe so why would alves want to come to newcastle for! we need to get someone in who doesn’t just think of the money but thinks of the pride and joy of playing for a team like newcastle so lets get rid of the alves talk and get real!!!

The Daily Mirror has more fantasy than J.R.R. Tolkein and has very vocally anti-NUFC for (at least) the whole of the pre-season onward. Funnily enough, I suspect the media turned on us when Ashley came in. Match reports focus on downsides, stories of Ashley selling up to characters from wherever the random nationality and story generator chooses. Will it be Icelandic? American? Chinesse? And if a Mido shows a group of fans the “V’s” with numerous people, reporters and cameras catching it, does the world not see it?

As usual, http://www.nufc.com has a fair few accurate points to make on this issue, not least, I imagine, on the claims made in The Times today and the quotes ripped from their website and claimed to be from speaking to an official spokesperson for the website (untrue).

So, if you want to win a Blog award, why not cast your net a little further than culling stories from NewsNow or the wire services for transfer gossip, pub observations of who’d make a good right-back, centre midfielder, etc cetera and fluff interviews extracted from easily accessible websites (such as icNewcastle, the website of the local rags in Newcie; The Journal, The Chronicle and The Sunday Sun).

I’ve typed it before and I’m typing it once more, for that kind of critique of the football club we support I can use NewsNow

    newsnow.co.uk/newsfeed/?name=Newcastle+United

More substance, more journalistic integrity (unlike the major newspapers) and greater awareness needed. Everyone’s got to start somewhere though…

agree 100% with nightfall!!! i think that alves would be like a tevez and mascherano, coming to a smaller club like west ham or newcastle and just binding they year or so at the smaller club and then moving to the big clubs: liverpool and man utd in this case so even if alves came to newcastle, he would move within a year to chelsea, liverpool, arsenal, man utd or even spurs dependin on how they do so no way is alves coming to newcastle!!!

Rich – when Bolton first got Faye he was a defensive midfield player and played there for Bolton. But last season Sam started to use him at CB so he played there quite a lot. Readers say he also turned out at RB for Bolton a few times. Maybe he’ll play DM for us. It will free Geremi up to play full back – and I guess they could also swap positions. What it says is that Faye is valuable because he’s flexible as to where he plays – hope we get him – it gives Sam lots of options. Love to see Sam give Solano a shot at RB – think Sam would be surprised at how good Nobby is there.

the signing of Faye just confuses me a bit, but itll be interesting to see how Sam plays him. Hes said today live on Skysports that he expects 2 players before friday Faye & ??? hopefully a right back, not Glenn Johnson though!! but ce la vi, id settle for him.

    @ RAFFLES –

If you get your news from ‘NewsNow’ then i pity you, i have never read one accurate story from their in my enitre life, i did read Tribal Football saying we were going to sell Obafemi Martins for a packet of crisps and a pint of guinesss to fund our herion addiction which coincides with the chinese midgets buying us for their opium ring, or something like that.

Also do you care to admit defeat after you slated me for saying our spending would be only be around the £10m net? We are still short of that figure by my calculations and way off your £30m+ claims.

    OMG DARREN… O M F G.

YOU NEVER REPLY TO ANY OF MY POSTS MATE, SO ONE FINAL TIME I SHALL SAY THE SAME THING IVE SAID EVERY SINGLE FRICKEN TIME YOU HAVE CAME UP WITH THAT 10 MILLION FIGURE AND THE DISSAPEARED INTO THE LONDON SMOG:

I WAS SIMPLY TOWING THE OFFICIALY PARTY LINE, I HAVE POSTED SO MANY LINKS TO CHRIS MORT SAYING ‘WE HAVE MORE THAN 10 MIL TO SPEND ITS JUST THE RIGHT PLAYERS ARENT AVAILABLE’

OMFG MATE, 30 MILLION CLAIMS?? I NEVER SAID WE WOULD DEF SPEND 30 MIL!!! YOUR JUST SHOVELING WORDS INTO MY MOUTH NOW, I SAID IF JOHN TERRY PROCLAIMED HE WANTED TO JOIN NUFC AND CHELSEA WOULD LET HIM GO I GUARENTEE YOUD SEE US PUTTING IN A 20-30 MILLION BID – AND FYI THATS HYPERBOLE, I DONT BLEIEVE IT WILL EVER HAPPEN I JUST USED IT AS AN EXAMPLE FFS.

I SAID I BET YOU WE CAN SPEND 30MIL IF POSSIBLE BUT THE PLAYERS ARENT AVAILABLE, OR WOULD YOU RATHER WE WERE FORKING OUT 10MIL FOR FLOPS LIKE LUQUE AGAIN?? MAYBE THAT WOULD MAKE YOU HAPPY BURNING MONEY FOR THE HELL OF IT?? LIKE WE USED TOO!

YOU CAN BELIEVE WHAT EVER CRAP YOU WANT TO BUT WHEN IT COMES TO MY TEAM ILL BELIEVE WHAT THE OWNER, THE CHAIRMAN AND THE MANAGER SAY OVER ANYTHING YOU POST HERE OR ANYGHING THE SUN SAYS OR ANYTHING THE BBC SAY. AND CHRIS MORT HAS BEEN ON RECORD TO SAY THE 10MIL SPENDING CAP IS TOTAL PANTS.

I SUGGEST YOU GO AN GOOGLE THE MEANING OF A BILLION BECAUSE MIKE ASHLEY REPORTEDLY HAS 1.9 BILLION AVAILABLE (NOT ASSETS) AND 100 MILLION WILL BE POCKET CHANGE FOR HIM, SO FOR HIM TO JUST SAY HES GOING TO SPEND A PITTANCE ON US IS MORE THAN RIDICULOUS.

    END OF STORY.

Ed – are you going to completely ignore the news about the so-called fans racially abusing Mido over the weekend? I would have thought that that would have been one of the biggest stories. Not that I’m trying to justify Mido’s behaviour when he scored but surely if the FA are investigating it, they must have some reason to believe he is telling the truth. The papers are all reporting it so I think you should give your take on it.

    Touchy touchy!!

You were the one on about spending big, 20m on a single player etc so don’t change your line now you have been proved wrong. I said Ashley wouldn’t spend big until he had a close look at the club, you rubbished that and said big buys were in the pipeline.

Why mention a 10m spending cap?

I didn’t say we had a 10m spending cap, I said we’d spend around £10m net which we have more or less.

You shot down any person who didn’t agree with your opinion that we were going to spend a fortune. Ashley is no Abramovich. He has cash yes but Newcastle is not his toy like the Russian fella, it is a business.

The sooner you get that into your thick skull the better off you will be.

OMG darren, you actually replied to me… its a fricken miracle.

you obviously cant get my posts through your retarded head mate.

one more time for you, please try and understand the words you read on your screen… i know it can be hard sometimes but just try and decipher what this means:

i never said we WILL spend big i said we CAN spend big, you said we have a cap of 10 mil, i said we dont… which is what Chris Mort has officialy stated.

if you need i can look up the definitions of WILL & CAN for you to make it easier to understand what im trying to say, i thought the simple example of John Terry might of made it easier for you to comprehend but it seems that just went right by you like everything else in this world.

one final time, and this was the title of the artcile on NUFC.co.uk ‘Chris MOrt – We Will Spend Big On Right Players’

thats basically all ive said, we can spend big if we want to and if the right player was available im sure we would.

please just google how much a Billione is, and rememeber its not the American definition but the English… but you probably dont even know what i mean by that because you cannot comprehend what im trying to say, even though ive posted it like 6 times to you.

but yes, the above text says we are going to spend 6000000 million in a day, yes i have always said we are going to spend billions on rubbish players and yes rivers of cheese do flow from the moon.

    you complete muppet.

i just trawled through the transfer related threads and in every single post when ive said Ashley needs to spend big ive said ‘I Hope’

maybe you should put this into your search engine Darren:

    ‘Define: Hope’

or maybe you should post a link to support the outrageous accusations youve made about me, because ive been through the last 23 pages of threads and i cannot find one post when i have said ‘WE WILL DEFINITLY SPEND 30MILLION+’

i can find plenty when ive put retarded monkeys like you in your place and said the 10 million rumour is nonsense, and that the press lie 99.99% of the time, which is a trait you must share.
