Major Newcastle News Stories – 31st August – 2007

11:36 am, Friday, August 31st, 2007 by Ed Harrison · 62 Comments

The next 48 hours is going to be important to Newcastle United.

We need to do two important things. One is to sign Habib Beye and Abdoulaye Faye today and the second thing is to beat Wigan tomorrow.

Then we’ll have over two weeks before the next game against Derby away, and Newcastle fans will be very happy.

It’s all very simple isn’t it? :D

Any news of signings today will come on the Official Newcastle United web-site.

  • We have a report on the imminent signing of Faye and Beye today. We know that Faye passed a medical yesterday and we expect the deal to be tied up soon. We also understand that Habib Faye flew into Newcastle last night to spend today tying up his move to Newcastle. Part of that will be undergoing a medical. If there are not any last minute problems we expect bioth players to join Newcastle before midnight tonight. That will be great news because it will significantly strengthen the defense. In fact Big Sam will be spoiled for choice as to who he plays in each position across the back-line.

Habib Beye – expected to have medical and sign today

  • We have our preview of the Newcastle Wigan game tomorrow and expect a win. A clean sheet has to be the aim tomorrow following our decent performance on Wednesday against Barnsley. We expect Cacapa to start and Steven Taylor to be at right-back with Harper retaining his position in goal. Newcastle favorite (and fan) Antoine Sibierski has a hamstring problem which may keep him out of the game but Titus Bramble is expected to play some part in the game.

  • There was news yesterday that American Danny Szetela was set to join Newcastle. Szetela plays for the Columbus Crew in the MLS and was a star player for the US Under-20 team in the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Canada during the summer. He just turned 20 in June and is one for the future. Danny was offered a 4 year contract with Roma but seems to have turned that down to play at his preferred destination – England. It looks like Newcastle will tie this one up today. Danny is 5’11″ and is a powerful central midfield player. He will cost almost nothing so not much of a chance being taken and the deal could pay off big time for us.

  • Excellent interview today that Michael Owen gives to Paul Gilder of the Journal. Looks like Michael is ready to play as many times as possible for Newcastle and he’ll have to fight it out with Oba Martins for the starting position. We still think Oba will start tomorrow. It was good to see both players score on Wednesday even though they were never on the pitch together.

Michael Owen – looking forward to playing many games for Newcastle this season – good.

  • Great article on the Official Newcastle United web site where popular player Antoine Sibierski says he’ll be a Newcastle United fan forever. There’s never been a player that made such an impact at the club with his very positive and upbeat attitude and the fact he loved his time at the club and at Newcastle itself. If he plays tomorrow we’re sure he’ll get a fantastic reception – and he deserves it. Newcastle fans love players who love the club – and Antoine certainly loves Newcastle United – forever.

We are heading for a very exciting time for Newcastle :D

  • 2 rich // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:03 PM

RUMOUR MILL: Up in the north-east, Shady77′s got a message from his Dad who works at Teesside airport and has seen Newcastle chairman Chris Mort going out to greet someone off a private jet that flew in from Barcelona. Deco maybe?

i think that American under-20 rumour is pants, i havent seen anyone credible reporting anything about the American yet.

I just hope Beye & Faye sign, anyone else will be an added bonus.

  • 3 Rave // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:06 PM

Heard that the deal for Faye could be held up over work permit difficulties.
hope it will be solved be the deadline!

  • 4 rich // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:08 PM

Rumour: Some times for your diary. Alex T has dropped us a line via 81111 to let us know Deco, Abdoulaye Faye, Habib Beye are due to meet their new team-mates at 1400 BST.

    PLEASE LET THIS BE TRUE!!!!!

  • 5 nightfall // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:09 PM

i juts read middlesbrough made an enquiry for shola… is this true? if it is…sell him…we have to many great strikers…

  • 6 rich // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:09 PM

@ ED – SIB Is ruled out for tommorows game thankfully.

  • 7 rich // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:23 PM

this boards dead today, i thought their would of been heaps of people swapping rumours etc.. but seems NIghtfall and i are the only ones!!!

Nolans being linked with us now, wether or not these rumours area real or not at least we have things going on where as august 31st 2006 we were the quietest team in the transfer market, infact in the whole window we hardly made a squeek.

Im keeping everything crossed the Deco rumours are true, we cant rely on Emre.

  • 8 Ed Harrison // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:30 PM

rich – good – one less who can score.

  • 9 Rave // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:32 PM

hey rich, how u got the rumour about Nolan?

  • 10 Ed Harrison // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:33 PM

rich – i wouldn’t hold my breath on Deco – although Sam may have a surprise up his sleeve but I doubt it. Hey – he’s done the right thing and strengthened our defense – big time. We should get plenty of points by HJan – and then maybe that’s phase 2 which would include a creative player – depending how Barton and Emre do. It’s now a strong squad – and Barton starts training again 2 weeks on Monday. He looked great when he was playing for us don’t forget

  • 11 Toon Chicken // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:35 PM

rich – sorry mate but i posted the rumours about Deco and J.Cole about an hour before you on the Faye and Beye story.
It would appear that no one is that interested though.
Let’s just hope for some official new soon, eh?

  • 12 Ed Harrison // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:36 PM

rich – there were rumors circulating in Newcastle last night that Requilme, Deco and Ronaldhino were in a Newcastle hotel last night (the Marriott in Gosforth) – did you hear about it – they said they hope to sign today for Newcastle today – honest.

  • 13 Ed Harrison // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:37 PM

We also have to remember that this is the last day of silly season – so expect some really silly rumors. Who made up the rumor on Deco?

  • 14 Toon Chicken // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:40 PM

Best rumor of the day so far has to be Boumsong to Liverpool. I’d almost sacrifice us getting Deco to see him make a mess of the scousers back four. Almost…

  • 15 Darren // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:40 PM

Mort was leaving Teeside airport, any private jet with an incoming player would have landed at Newcastle, time is tight and there is no need for secrecy on the last day.

He could still be going to meet a player though!

  • 16 Hammy // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:42 PM

C’mon guys…relax….let’s just wait for the press conference…..
I’d settle for Beye and Faye as long as it’s not Amdy.

  • 17 ToonJon // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:43 PM

There is no point saying rumours cause it seems that certain players are in about 5 different locations at the same time.

I don’t want rumours i want official news. Good official news.

I hope we get Beye and Faye and maybe one or two others.

  • 18 Toon Chicken // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:46 PM

Ed – a certain Shady77′s dad who work’s at Teesside Airport apparently saw Chris Mort arriving to meet a private jet from Barcelona.
Not sure why he would fly into Teesside – if I was him i’d take one look at the place and fly straight back out again.

  • 19 roscoe // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:46 PM

Marseille captain Habib Beye has confirmed he will join Newcastle on a four-year deal today after arriving on Tyneside yesterday.
“I have decided to leave, initially, because it is an offer of a large club, which had been on the table for a month. I had refused it because I wished to remain in Marseilles and to play in the Champions League. But then it became an offer that, financially, I could not refuse.”

  • 20 Hammy // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:50 PM

At least the guy is honest….Champions league or treble your pay?
Who says you need European football to attract players.

  • 21 Chris // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:52 PM

Rich! Rumours are what newspaper’s do to sell newspapers. I don’t see the point of our own fans spreading rumours. We’ll only be gutted when they don’t come off.
If the Deco rumours are true then I’ll take my hat of to you, but we all know it’s Ronaldinho! LOL!
No offence mate, but I have just had a flashback of the last transfer window slamming shut, and me feeling devastated!

  • 22 aaron d // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:53 PM

does any one know what happened to Oliver Bernard? We released him but has he signed for any one?

  • 23 Hammy // Aug 31, 2007 at 12:57 PM

I’m sure I saw him working at Mcdonalds in Westerhope…he’d put a bit of weight on but it was defo him.

  • 24 leo // Aug 31, 2007 at 1:02 PM

is that airport you are referring to really called teeside airport? because i know which airport you mean, it is on the edge of the tyne river, (the north side) and isnt too bad a location, i dont think. maybe im thinking of a different airport, because why would it be called teeside airport? anyone know???

  • 25 nightfall // Aug 31, 2007 at 1:02 PM

we don’t need deco…we have enough creative midfielders…we have emre, barton and n’zogbia…

our squad…when all fit that is:

    ………………given
    beye cacapa rozehnal enrique
    milner geremi n’zogbia duff
    ……….martins viduka

subs: harper, taylor, butt (smith), barton, owen

    we only need beye….that’s it!

  • 26 Viktor Laszlo // Aug 31, 2007 at 1:04 PM

Last year was a huge disappointment, but in 2005 I remember the joy when the Owen deal went through (and hopefully we’ll start to see the effects from now on ;) )…

I’d love to see Deco join ‘castle, but I’m happy with Faye/Beye. Let’s hope we don’t drop the ball with them!

Rumour-wise it’s been pretty tame. We need some more airport dads reporting private jets! Come on!

  • 27 roscoe // Aug 31, 2007 at 1:14 PM

    Nightfall –

    barton on the bench!

    Are you crazy????

  • 28 Toon Chicken // Aug 31, 2007 at 1:14 PM

still think Owen starts every time when fit.

  • 29 roscoe // Aug 31, 2007 at 1:15 PM

    owen and martins up front!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 30 Obafan // Aug 31, 2007 at 1:19 PM

Love those last days of the transfer period; the rumours, peo;ple beliveing everything, new stories about players who ae for the 1ste time being linked with a club.

Off all the potential new players; there is 1 which I really hope will be true; that’s the Beye transfer, because:
    1. we defenitely need a new RB.
    2. he is pure quality, will be a top transfer of the EPL season together with Cacapa
    3. the guy is as honnest as can be; didn’t jump on the first deal, because he wanted to think about it and now he sees that NUFC is building a fantastic team and he wants to be part of it. Fantastic!!!!

    Faye will also be a very good addittion to our squad, because;
    1. he knows the EPL and is experienced with it; 2 thing BS was looking for
    2. BS knows the player and all his other transfers were players which he watched but not really knew like he knows Faye and they all are quality. He already worked a lot with Faye and knows him very good, so he also must be a quality player. I see him playing in the role of Butt.

  • 31 Toon Chicken // Aug 31, 2007 at 1:36 PM

Obafan – didn’t Beye say the reason he eventually agreed to come to the Toon was because we offered him a staggering amount of money? And not because BSA was building a fantastic team.

    Not that I’m complaining.

  • 32 Obafan // Aug 31, 2007 at 1:42 PM

Toon CHicken – yes, you’re right, but if he only wanted to come for the money then he would have been here last mont as a new player. Now he sees that things are going very good at the toon, but not at l’OM (which he stated last month as one reason to stay because l’OM would have a fantastic team). So I think it’s a combination of:
    1. NUFC building a new team and also took a good start in the EPL
    2. l’OM can’t find a good rhythm and missed their start completely
    3. Off course the financial aspect, which he also mentions

  • 33 Jag // Aug 31, 2007 at 1:54 PM

Think the Deco rumour could well have legs …. NUFC.com now reporting it and hey are usually reliable and only report rumours on very rare occasions …
And you’ve missed the story of the day …. Mort and Ash on the lash after the game and spending £2500 in Blu Bamboo … and managing to resist calling us mugs for buying rip off shirts or the women dogs … lol
Looks like Ash is here to stay so hope the doubters are silenced soon
And will he cap the week off with a massive signing he said he wanted a while back that would make the football world sit up and take noticed we’ve arrived …

  • 34 StevieA // Aug 31, 2007 at 2:18 PM

I think the Deco rumour will become true. When you think about it we have been in talks with him for some time now, we have met with Deco etc and I really think they are just waiting for the right time to make a move.

This could well be the best time because he probably won’t get a place in Barca’s 1st team now and no doubt they will sign one or two new players (as always!).

So it’s our opportunity to make him feel welcome and he could be the signing of the season if we get him for £4 or £5 Million. Or perhaps on loan with a view of a permanent signing?

  • 35 sean // Aug 31, 2007 at 2:23 PM

it says on wikipedia which is a factfile full of information if u type in deco and then look under current club it says newcastle !! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deco

scroll down and its on the right

  • 36 Chris // Aug 31, 2007 at 2:35 PM

Sean. You can actually edit wikipedia yourself. So I wouldn’t read too much into that.

  • 37 Rich // Aug 31, 2007 at 2:38 PM

where do u see that sean? it still says barcelona? only thing i read was he was linked with newcastle united! hope its true tho

  • 38 Hammy // Aug 31, 2007 at 2:38 PM

Sean…..what have you had for lunch???? unless you spell Newcastle….
FC BARCELONA….I’m afraid you’re seeing things.

  • 39 sean // Aug 31, 2007 at 2:53 PM

sorry my mistake lol. hope that beye and deco come not to sure bout faye because of his work permit issue …

  • 40 Darren // Aug 31, 2007 at 3:00 PM

Somebody has been altering wikipedia – it mentions Teeside airport

  • 41 sean // Aug 31, 2007 at 3:15 PM

deco for 5 milliom plus emre would be a good buy and what is the rubish about ronaldinho staying in a newcastle hotel !!!

  • 42 bob // Aug 31, 2007 at 3:23 PM

wats all this about deco, faye and beye to meet at the training ground at 2 cuz havnt heard anythng and im sure sites would be goin crazy if deco was at our training ground fingers crossed tho but probably just a rumour, im also suprised that nothing has been said bout riquelme as he seems a cert to leave villareal and if morts on his way to spain surely riquelme must be a possibility

  • 43 Chris // Aug 31, 2007 at 3:28 PM

Bob. Riquelme is being strongly linked to Everton.

  • 44 Chris // Aug 31, 2007 at 3:33 PM

It’s like Christmas Eve to me. I only have 2 presents on my wishlist ( Beye and Faye) but a nice big present would top it off.

I just can’t wait any longer for the news of signings. The longer it goes on, the more it seems likely that the Gaffers have something up their sleeves.

I hope the work permits don’t become an issue.

  • 45 sean // Aug 31, 2007 at 3:45 PM

i rekon that faye wont come because of the work permit problem but still fingers crossed

  • 46 StevieA // Aug 31, 2007 at 3:55 PM

Work Permit will be delayed that’s all. We can sign him with the hope that the WP will go through. If it doesn’t then we can appeal and then we would cancel.

The problem was that noone expected him to need one I believe.

  • 47 Chris // Aug 31, 2007 at 3:58 PM

Considering he’s already playing in the Premiership I’m surprised he does need a work permit!

  • 48 Midjew // Aug 31, 2007 at 4:48 PM

Jag – Where on NUFC.com does it say about deco coming to newcastle???

  • 49 Ed Harrison // Aug 31, 2007 at 5:11 PM

I think people are having us on about Deco – there’s nothing in the press on it – so who was first to start the rumor ?
    :D

  • 50 Ed Harrison // Aug 31, 2007 at 5:11 PM

Chris – I feel the same way!

  • 51 WelshWizard // Aug 31, 2007 at 5:40 PM

Everton had to wait for a work permit for Yakubu!!!

  • 52 Rich // Aug 31, 2007 at 5:48 PM

guys i know most of the rumours are not true, thats why said even if they are real or not at least it gives us something to talk about compared to last season we didnt make a squeek in the transfer window let alone the last day.

i said id be happy with Faye & Beye but a nice suprise would make my day.

i just posetd themfor something to talk about.

  • 53 jenson button // Aug 31, 2007 at 6:25 PM

    beye had signed for us.

  • 54 toonoholic // Aug 31, 2007 at 6:39 PM

its 6:30 and still no signings :|

  • 55 Midjew // Aug 31, 2007 at 6:50 PM

jenson button – how do you know beye has signed?

  • 56 ToonJon // Aug 31, 2007 at 7:22 PM

Not much news on the official site. :(

  • 57 Bob // Aug 31, 2007 at 8:16 PM

Why do people keep saying “Offer £5m plus Emre for Deco”?

Barca don’t need or want Emre. I doubt they need the money either. They probably have a few players that are better than Emre and that have less problems with injuries,

We would need to offer a lot of money – say £15m – plus a world class player, such as Owen for them to consider the offer (although they have no need for Owen either!)

  • 58 bob // Aug 31, 2007 at 10:21 PM

any one geting nervous 20 past 10 no confirmation

  • 59 Toon Chicken // Aug 31, 2007 at 10:39 PM

Everyone chill out. Sammy Lee said about 3 days ago that he expected Faye to sign for us, and we already know he’s had a medical. Yes, he is waiting for a work permit, but that doesn’t stop him signing on the dotted line.
Marseilles President said Beye would be joining us , and the man himself said he’s accepted terms for a 4 year contract.
Basically, everyone at SJP has gone home to bed now, just because we don’t hold a press conference doesn’t mean they haven’t signed. Enrique signed a couple of days before he was unveiled to the fans and media.
Go to bed, wake up in the morning, rejoice in our 2 new excellent signings and wish for 3 well-earned points from Bumble and Co.

  • 60 sean // Aug 31, 2007 at 11:21 PM

its 20 past 11 and still no one has been signed wats going 2 happen !!!

  • 61 StevieA // Sep 1, 2007 at 12:35 AM

Delays with paperwork are common. Doesn’t mean we haven’t signed anyone. Don’t panic ;)

Players who need Work Permits take much more paperwork than a EU player would.

I expect Faye, Beye and perhaps another player by the morning. If we have let Solano go then obviously Sam doesn’t see Solano playing in midfield. I think he was keeping him for a backup player for the right back position but now it seems we don’t need him. It can only be good news surely?

  • 62 StevieA // Sep 1, 2007 at 12:38 AM

    OFFICIAL!!!!!

NEWCASTLE United have completed the deadline day signing of Bolton defender Abdoulaye Faye.

The 29-year-old Senegal star has penned a three-year deal at St.James’ Park.

Faye signed for the Trotters in 2005 and went on to make 60 Premiership appearances, scoring three times for the Lancashire club.

    And also…

MARSEILLE defender Habib Beye has completed his switch to Newcastle United.

The 29-year-old Senegal star has signed a three-year deal with the Magpies.

Beye, who can operate as a right-back or centre-back, was skipper of the French club having joined from Strasbourg in 2003.

He featured in both legs of Marseille’s UEFA Cup semi-final victory over United in 2004 but was on the losing side in the final against Valencia.

All on the official website (nufc.co.uk) brilliant news eh? :)
