Mike Ashley – Barred From Club – Drinks On Me

Great story on BBC Sports about Mike Ashley’s celebrations on Wednesday night, after the home game with Barnsley.

Apparently after the game Mike went to the Blu Babu night-club, in Newcastle’s famous Bigg Market, to celebrate Newcastle first win that Mike had actually attended in person.

However, Ashley still had his world-famous black and white striped Newcastle shirt on, and was refused entry, because he wasn’t dressed accordingly.

He was breaking the dress code at the nightclub – right 😀

Mike Ashley – celebrated after game – they wouldn’t let me in – but drinks on me

But after showing the manager of the night-club his business card (Chris Mort was also with him and identified himself) to prove he was indeed the owner of Newcastle’s football club – guess what?

Yes – right again – he was allowed in. Really good call by Mark Jones, chairman of Ultimate Leisure, who own the night club 😀

The Newcastle United owner then bought drinks for all 300 visitors at the club and tipped the bar staff £500. Mark Jones, chairman of Ultimate Leisure, which owns the bar based in the city’s Bigg Market area told the BBC:

“Our assistant manager spotted the football shirt and told Mike he would not be allowed in because of our no team colors policy.”

“At this point, Mike and Newcastle chairman Chris Mort took out their business cards and explained who they were.”

“A quick decision was then taken to modify our policy to allow only football club owners to wear their team’s colors.”

“They came in and drank in the VIP lounge.”

“They were really friendly and Chris Mort got on the DJ’s microphone and announced he and Mike would buy everyone inside a drink.”

We wonder how quick the decision to modify their dress policy took – one, or would it be two seconds. Mike and Chris then apparently posed for photographs and talked to Newcastle fans until the bar closed at 3am. The bar bill racked up was £2,500. Well, we are very pleased to hear that Mike and Chris like to enjoy themselves – good for them! They obviously qualify as true Newcastle fans.

Mike and Chris relaxing after Newcastle win against Barnsley

We also expect they got some inside tips from the Geordie fans as to who Newcastle should be signing before the end of the transfer window at midnight tonight. Wonder if they noted the names down – or could remember who they were the next morning 😀

Mike, 42-year-old, is said to be the UK’s 25th wealthiest person and according to the Sunday Times, he is worth around £1.9B. We really hope Mike will continue to celebrate every Newcastle win (and there’ll be a lot more of these under Big Sam). We suppose he can always claim the bar bill as a business expense – especially if he buys everyone a drink.

Great story! and good for you Mike (and Chris) 😀

Comments welcome.

Glad he seems like a good bloke – he seems a lot more out there than people had us believe – I also believe he has the bug now – bet he’s at the game tomorrow!
He’ll have sampled the Newcastle passion first hand – wonder if the fans told him who they should be buying – bet they did.

good to hear this sort of story, two down to earth guys getting fully immersed in the local culture, and i tell thee, blu bambu typifies wednesday night local culture!
i wish i’d gone out wednesday, instead i went somewhere else, can mike pick up that extortionate bar bill too please?!

James – complete rubbish about him selling – in fact I think he sees how great a club Newcastle can become – and it’ll be worth much much more than 133M in a couple of years. Bet those two names were brought up – but he was probably a little inebriated by then – really funny story 😀

if he reacts to this when we beat small teams like this think what hell be like when we gub one of the top 3 teams? 😀

Harsh words from Sib regarding Fat Freddy:

“As a Newcastle fan, as I am, I was very happy when Shepherd left the club because he is the reason why they have not won anything for a long time,” insisted Sibierski.

“I was only there for a year but I could see what kind of chairman he was.

“I’m not saying this because I was upset with him when he changed his mind over me signing a new contract which I had agreed with Glenn Roeder.

“It’s because as a chairman I never saw him once last year come and see us to have a meeting, or speak to us about results and aims we should have had.

“Compared to the other chairmen I have seen throughout my life and career, he was not a good chairman.

“I don’t know him as a man, maybe he was a good man, but as a chairman he was simply not good enough.

“With Sam Allardyce as manager and the players he has brought to the club, and with the players already there, they are a really tough side now.

“I think they are going to win a trophy, and as a Newcastle fan I would be delighted if they won something this year.

“Newcastle fans deserve that, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they finished top six because of the quality players and good manager.”

surely Mike Ashley have advisors. Why the hell would they want to go to a dump like blu bambu to introduce yourself to the geordie nation. There must be more intelligent people to speak to on a wednesday night in town than the regulars of newcastles fifth or sixth best nightclub…

Had a barny with a pool supporter, or 4. They choose to hit our weaknesses by accessing our past trophy wise. For me, its how you are today. And our squad, bar Gerrard, is stronger than theirs. Im a cert in realism. Arsenal too. Look at the lads we have now. We have the leagues best keeper, gaining his reputation behind the sh1ttest defence. Two great backups in Krul and Harper. A defence containing Englands finest defensive prospect since JT. spains equivalent to S Taylor in Enrique, THREE previous club captains and quality players in Rozehnal, Casapa and Beye. Faye who is a proven premierleague performer. Midfield, we have a suberp blend. Nzgobia will be massive for France. Milner is a diamond. Butt is so far our best player. Geremi, club captain is a quality player. Barton and Emre need I say more. Smith to add that extra dimension. Duff to add splendor and pace. And without DOUBT the best attack in the ship. Dont even debate it.

Editor Harrison :P, you know yourself official means yesterdays news when you have the player and the previous club management confirming it, combined with a sly remark from the buyers club manager and a silence from other sources.

Edd case, you think if Beye and Faye deals were the only ones to announce, they would leave it till this late. HOWAY LAD, your brighter than that. Something is going on, right now as us lot mutter on. They are pushing cheques. There has to be a third, because the other two are predictable. Deco not neccessarily, j Cole has been spotted in the North as well.

    nothing on nufc.co.uk yet.

i agree, we must be trying to get a last minute deal for someone.

Saying that though Sky Sports report that Nobby has passed a medical at West Ham and is ready to sign once Newcastle complete their signings it will all go through.

This can mean we are either waiting for Beye to put pet to paper, or we are signing another replacement for Nobby aswell as Beye & Faye.
    what you guys think??

James, both are African players so they obviously need permits, im pretty sure neither hold an EU passport.

Shouldnt be trouble for either though, both are internationals and get selected for their countries so its just a formality i hope.

In terms of work permits, Beye was born in (or just outside of) Paris, so definitely does not need one.
