Robbie Keane – Given Best Goalkeeper I’ve Ever Seen

We always wondered why Roy Keane criticized Shay Given last season for playing too many times for Ireland. It seemed an odd comment at the time, as any player presumably is honored to play for their country.

Today we see that his namesake Robbie is now praising Shay Given as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

Well, we agree with that one, so let’s take a look at what Robbie is saying.

Shay Given Robbie Keane says he’s the best goalkeeper he’s ever seen

This is what Robbie Keane said yesterday:

“Cech is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, but we’re quite lucky in that we have the best in Shay Given,”

“Cech is different class but Shay Given is, for me, one of the best goalkeepers I’ve ever seen.”

Given has great talent, there’s little doubt about that, and of course Shay is one of those players who plays well in the big games – always a sign of a great player. Over the years he’s turned in some world-class performances for Ireland and if he played for a London club (Arsenal have always been keen on Given) we think he’d get a lot more acclaim.

Shay missed the Premier League start with another groin problem and with Harper having excelled in his absence, Sam Allardyce has been reluctant to make any change. The club’s number one goalkeeper will return to Newcastle tomorrow, but tonight he has a huge game for Ireland against the Czech Republic in Prague. Shay will be going against team-mate David Rozehnal and the game will feature two of the best keepers in the world in Given and Cech. We now know who Robbie Keane thinks is the better goalkeeper of the two.

It was Robbie Keane who said that about Super Shay not the dog fiddler from down the road. He said it in a sky sports interview that was on TV last night!

Shay’s good, point accepted. Apparently Arsenal and Spuds are looking for a keeper and both have Juicy Jaaskalinen top of the shopping list. Any thoughts on why no one interested in our current number 2 Shay? Or why Lehman, Van de Sar, Robinson, James etc have been higher than Shay or Stevie on peoples shopping lists over the past few years. Maybe Shay and Stevie are on such a big wedge no one else can afford them, although hard to believe for ManU?

Len Smith, listen to me carefully….

SHAY IS NOT OUR FRICKEN NUMBER 2 OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HE HAS BEEN INJURED AND BIG SAM HAS ALREADY SAID HE IS TAKING HIS TIME AS ITS THE SAME INJURY RE-OCCURING WITH SHAY.

SHAY IS ONE OF THE BEST KEPPERS IN THE WORLD AND IS THE BEST IN THE UK.

OUR CURRENT NUMBER 2 IS STILL STEVE HARPER HES BEEN PLAYING AHEAD OF SHAY BECAUSE SHAY IS GETTING OVER AN INJURY.

WHEN MICHAEL OWEN STARTED ON THE BENCH WHEN HE WAS COMING BACK TO FITNESS IT DIDNT MEAN HE WAS OUR RESERVE KEEPER IT JUST MEANT SAM KNOWS WHAT HES DOING.

FFS, SOME FANS ARE SO FICKLE.

    LEN SMITH –

please read this to enlighten your ignorance regarding our keeper situation:

Big Sam talking about NUFC Number 1:

“He has gone to see a specialist in London because we want to make sure just how much damage has been done,”

“He has been for a scan and it doesn’t look serious, it’s just a slight strain.”

“At the moment we only expect him to be out for a couple of weeks, but we won’t take any risks.”

“We’re happy with the initial diagnosis, but we have just sent him away to get a second opinion.” “He has had a few injuries of this kind recently and we want to make certain there are not going to be any side effects down the line.”

“It doesn’t look as though it is going to keep him out for very long, so we won’t look to bring in another goalkeeper as cover at this stage.”

also, Len you have further illustrated your footballing inepitude because the transfer window is shut, so thats why no one is going in for anyone because you cant buy anyone unless its a free transfer at the moment.

Also, you ask why no one has eveer tried to buy Shay or Steve its becuase they both have professed allegiance to NUFC, they are not your average footballer who will play for the highest bidder they are NUFC through & through. If you havent realised this then you are not much of a Toon fan let alone a football fan.

Given’s better than Cech … There I said it!

Oh, and it’s because they know Given is loyal to the Toon and therefore won’t even approach – sort of like approaching Gerrard or Le Tissier

Get real Craig Allen, you remind me of one comment made by Eric Wynalda just before USA vs Chech Republic in the world cup by saying that Casey Keller is better than Cech.
Given is nowhere near to Cech.End of discusion.

Rich is right… this whole “non-story” about Steve Harper “challenging” for top spot gets on my wick something terrible.

    Shay: World Class keeper
Steve: Admirable bloke and decent back-up

…this site has been one of the main culprits of peddling this non-story. Shay is number one, anyone who thinks Steve Harper should be ahead of Shay for a few good run outs, does not even begin to understand their football.

First of all Stephen, I’m sure you do live near where Keane lived and all. I get that you’re a Toon fan but don’t go on talking crap like that about Keane or his family. (If you we’re from Cork, which I don’t really believe because the fast majority of Corkonians think Keane is God, I’d know I am one)
First of all, Keane may be tough on the field and he may have a firey temper but he’s an absolute gent. He’s sound out, his family, well that’s ridiculous what you’ve said about his family, you don’t even know them, you’ve know right.

Anyway Cech flatters to decieve he’s plays behind the Chelsea backlone if GIven played for Chelsea no doubt he’d be noted as the best. Given is better then Cech, funny how Keane who plays with him a few times every couple of months can spot that he’s world class but people here, Newcastle fans and the manager think that Harper is just as good, better or maybe only a small bit less talented. It’s a joke. Harper is OK Given is world class and if Harper does (for some strange reason) keep getting picked ahead of Given then Shay should leave and no doubt when the transfer window opens again maybe Arsenal will actually make a move and maybe, just maybe GIven will go. He’s given ye so much, and this is what he gets, he’s given ye 10 years of amazing service maybe now he should go somewhere where he’s a chance of winning silverware. It’s the least he deserves.

I am not Eric Wynalda I couldn’t give a rat’s ass who that is frankly, I am me and I say Given’s better then Cech. There I said it not Eric Wynalda. Now prove me otherwise, by listing attributes a world class keeper should have that are present in Cech but not in Given’s skill-set.

Oh … and try not bring Eric Wynalda again into this.

I’m sorry, but right now, Given is our #2. Because no manager is stupid enough to pull a class keeper when he is having this kind of run of form. Shay is indeed world class, but it’s about that time that we may need to start thinking about the fact that he is crocked. If he “strains” his groin 1 more time, be assured that BSA will be looking for a keeper in January.

Bill F – i think Krull will be world class in 2or3 years time and will be our no1 . As for Given and Harper.Given makes reflex saves that at times are virtually unbelivable, he is world class in that department.Harper for me has a slightly beter command of his area at corners and set pieces. There is not a lot of difference between them in all areas, that is why for me Harper should stay as our first choice for now .He has started the season well and for the defence on the whole it would be beter for the understanding and gelling together if he had along run to continue our great start.

its true , ive rated given as one of the best on the world for years , at times when i became disilusioned with the toon yet still had the radio on in the background , you’d be amazed how many times you here ‘and given makes a terrific save’ , over the course of the season .
im glad he’s slept on, as any team with half a brain woulda shattered craig gordons record fee going after given years ago.
as it stands tho , we need to keep harper happy , he’s awsome cover and deserves a few games each season , and shay should be happy to see harper get some games .

Thing is and I hesitate to criticise Given or Harper because they have had to carry a poor defence. But when a keeper has the sort of defenders we have had recently then they do tend to look better as they have so much to do. Remember that Fulham keeper a couple of seasons back he was hopeless normally, but performed miracles against us they had a c**p defence, I think both are first class keepers but I don’t think we should carried away because they are ours.

Gary, GIven WAS injured, he strained his groin twice but now he’s built up the muscles in his middle core which were causing the injuries. (You could say the same for OWen yet no seems to.) Damaged goods, come off it, Harper is good form now, fine I’ll take that but compared to what, how many times have you seen Given play this season once?? I saw Given make saves in the Slovakia match, in one match that I’d be pretty confident that Harper wouldn’t make. Given is the better keeper, he’s alot better then Harper.

Some of ye are actually unbelivable, oh eh Krul will be world class in 2 or 3 years, he’ll be our number 1 then..there’s this thing called loyalty right, sure ask Given he knows all about it, apparently ye don’t. Given has done so much for ye over the last 10 years and I firmly believe that ye would have been relegated and relegated over and over again if it wasn’t for Given but the sure now like Harper’s doing ok like we don’t want to unsettle the defense by putting in a better keeper, God no. GIven deserves trophis, he deserves to win things and if he doesn’t get his spot in the team then he should walk he’s done enough for ye, he’s put up with enough. So he gets injured and ye haven’t lost in a couple of games so ye turn yere backs on him, Harper will do. THat’s loyalty.
