Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce makes just one change form the side that beat Wigan 1-0 last time out, with Shola Ameobi replacing Mark Viduka, who still has a hamstring problem.

Big Sam keeps faith with Steve Harper in goal, while Steven Taylor also keeps his place at right -back. Both new signings Habib Beye and Abdoulaye Faye are named as substitutes and youngsters James Milner and Charles N’Zogbia will be making their 50th Premiership start for the club.

Michael Owen is in the starting eleven with Oba Martins again on the bench.

For Derby, Newcastle fan Steve Howard starts in attack against his former Hartlepool team-mate Steve Harper in the Newcastle goal.

Teams:

Derby County: Stephen Bywater, Tyrone Mears, Dean Leacock, Claude Davis, Andy Griffin, Gary Teale, Stephen Pearson, Eddie Lewis, Kenny Miller, Steve Howard, Matt Oakley
Subs: Jay McEveley, David Jones, Robert Earnshaw, Andy Todd, Benny Feilhaber

Newcastle: Steve Harper, Steven Taylor, Cacapa, David Rozehnal, Charles N’Zogbia, Alan Smith, Nicky Butt, Geremi, James MIlner, Shola Ameobi, Michael Owen
Subs: Habib Beye, Abdoulaye Faye, Oba Martins, Matty Pattison, Shay Given

Referee: Peter Walton

We’ll have a report at half time – and a full report of the game at the final whistle.

We haven’t created anything. Sadly our midfield still lacks creativity and offensive attitude. I don’t like it either, that Derby have been allowed to run the ball up the sides several times. Hope we can bag a goal before halftime, or else Big Sam has to give them a real talking to, and possibly a substitution.

Martins simply must get on from the start of the second half. We need his speed and shot. Ameobi hasn’t taken the chance that has been givin to him. Off with him. On with martins.

i reckon that beye should come on for taylor so we can have someone going up and down the right hand side. atm we have no one down the right hand side as taylor is a centre back and smith is either a striker or a centre midfielder. also bring on martins for ameobi. wat a waste of space. cant kick or head a ball properly

absolutely no control in midfield, the goal we conceded is from a missed header by geremi. butt was overwhelmed by Derby players, smith is nowhere to be seen, defenders has nobody to pass the ball to, strikers have no supply….the quality of play is horrifying….a complete championship side…
if we don’t bring in some steel and flair in midfield, this season is going to be forgetable AGAIN…
