One of our up and coming youngsters, 20 year-old David Edgar has been made Newcastle Reserve Team captain by Lee Clark, our Reserves Team manager.
That’s a good move by Lee as it gives some added responsibility to David and will hopefully help him in his development.
David Edgar – good leadership abilities and probably out on loan come January
We do expect David to be sent out on loan to some Championship team in January so he can get more first team experience and more playing time – he needs games.
He’s appeared 4 times for Newcastle’s first team so far and scored one goal – that tremendous strike from outside the box against Manchester United at St. James’ Park last season when he couldn’t keep from smiling for 15 minutes 😀
He’s also played for the Canada Under-18’s team and appeared 24 times for the Canada Under-20 side and is their captain at the moment. Good to see some leadership from the Canadian. He had a good tournament that Canada hosted last summer in the FIFA World Cup for the Under-20 year olds.
He told the Evening Chronicle yesterday afternoon:
“I am loving being captain – it’s a real honor. It does bring something extra to your game and it is a real honor to captain any Newcastle United team.â€
“And I was happy when the coach handed me the armband. I have played a few years in the reserves and I am delighted to be captain.â€
“I have already done the job for Canada Under-20s. But it is extra special doing it for a massive club. I have supported Newcastle since I was a little kid so it’s great for me.”
“I also know that I could go out on loan at any stage, so I just have to keep working hard.”
We have high hopes for David but he needs to be dispatched on loan like Tim Krul and Andy Carroll to get first team games every week. That’s what he needs right now for his development, and the captaincy of our reserves will definitely help. We also love David’s positive attitude.
On February 1, 2007 David was named Canadian Youth Player of the Year for the 2006 season. On May 5, 2007 he signed a new contract at Newcastle that will keep him at the club until 2009.
