Steven Taylor has talked today about how the defense did not perform on Saturday and didn’t give Shay Given enough protection in his comeback game.
It’s not often we concede 3 goals and Steven also points out we now have 3 away defeats in a row and our away form seems no better, at the moment, than last season. Both the defense and our away form will need improve – quickly.
Let’s take a look at what Steve has to say about Saturday.
Steven Taylor – defense not good enough, we agree
This is what Steven Taylor said today about Shay Given and the Newcastle team:
“He put a good performance in against Arsenal (in Tuesday’s Carling Cup third-round defeat) and on Saturday he was unlucky with the goals. The last one he couldn’t do anything about.â€
“The lads are disappointed but we’ve just got to hold our hands up, forget about it and look to the future.â€
“Things didn’t go well for us all over the park,†“We had a couple of good chances. We want to improve our away form, it’s three defeats on the trot away and we’ve got to put that right. We didn’t pass the ball as well as we can.â€
“They’re a good side but on our day we can match them. I believe we’re good enough to come to places like this and get a good result. Last season our away form wasn’t the best. It’s three (away defeats) on the bounce now and we’ve got put that right sooner rather than later.â€
We thought Sam could have changed things around a little earlier on Saturday and brought on one of our most creative and skilled players in Emre. But the little Turkish midfielder was only an 88th-minute substitute on Saturday, far too late to be expected to do anything. We’ll assume Sam may play him on Sunday against Everton, as it could be time for Emre to give Newcastle a good full creative game. He will be off again to play for Turkey in the upcoming international break.
We also think Steven did not have one of his better games against City and it does look like we may have missed Claudio Cacapa in our last two defeats. But Caçapa just failed a fitness test on his groin and we expect him to be ready to play at Everton and we expect him to join Rozehnal at the center of Newcastle’s defense. We think Steven will start on the bench against Everton.
We’d also like to see the Zog tried in central midfield, since we feel he can provide the energy and creativity, which is sadly missing when Butt and Geremi play together. Looks like this all depends on when Big Sam decides to start Enrique at left back, which will free up N’Zogbia. We’ll have to wait and see but Enrique will get another game under his belt for the Reserves at Manchester City tonight.
