Barton Plays Solid 45 Minutes For Reserves

Newcastle Reserves earned a draw at Manchester City last night with Joey Barton getting his first taste of competitive action since July 21st when he broke a metatarsal in his foot.

Joey played the first half before being replaced by Mark Doninger at the interval and he seemed to come through the game well.

First teamers Emre, Enrique and Faye played the full game and Emre scored direct from a free kick.

Joey Barton – got in a good 45 minutes for the reserves last night

During the first half Barton’s first involvement was a neatly conceived reverse pass which put Jonny Godsmark clear through but City’s Swedish goalkeeper Isaksson saved well. It could be that Isaksson could be back playing for City’s first team shortly. During his absence through injury City youngsters Schmeichel and Hart have deputized well.

The other good news last night was that three first-teamers Emre, Jose Enrique and Abdoulaye Faye played the full game and Emre scored a beautiful goal directly from a free kick. The Turkish international guided the ball, via his cultured left foot, over the City wall and into the net off the underside of the cross-bar.

19 year old Newcastle goalkeeper Fraser Forster had another fine game and made a fantastic double save in the 14th minute. He first kept out Ashley Grimes’ 12-yard drive and then recovered quickly to deny Kelvin Etuhu from the rebound. Forster has improved greatly over the last 18 months and he may well be sent out on loan shortly, if he keeps up these excellent performances. Nobody can say we are short of good goalkeepers in Given and Harper with 19 year-old youngsters Krul and Forster in the wings. The news we are interested in Bolton’s Jussi Jaaskelainen we think is generated solely by his agent.

Newcastle almost sneaked the win in the last 5 minutes when Callum Morris, who had just replaced Newcastle’s captain 19 year-old David Edgar, saw his powerful header kicked off the line by City’s Shaleum Logan.

Four first teamers had a run-out last night, which is really good news and Emre, Enrique and Faye must be in the frame for Sunday’s vital home game against Everton. Newcastle Reserve’s next home game will be next Monday at Kingston Park against Wigan with the KO scheduled for 7 pm.

Since Krul and Forster are doing so well maybe we should sell Shay while he is still worth something, give Stevie Harper an improved contract, and use the two youngsters as backup. Having two good keepers over 30 in the squad is a waste of talent and money particulary when they are blocking progress of the youngsters.
