FT: Newcastle 3 Everton 2 Owen Scores!

Emre – brought on after 74 minutes and scored a wonderful goal after 86 minutes

Newcastle finally won a wild game 3-2 after the game was level at 1-1 with 4 minutes to go. Newcastle seemed comfortably ahead at half time 1-0 but Everton came storming back in the second half after a rocket at half time from Moyes.

Newcastle were struggling to get back into this game after the interval and conceded a poor goal on 52 minutes to Andy Johnson after taking the lead in the first half through a good strike from Nicky Butt. Everton were starting to get on top and Newcastle looked frustrated, but then after 74 minutes Allardyce brought on Owen and Emre for Martins and Milner and it turned the game. The Newcastle crowd were fantastic and in a tough situation they were giving the team all kinds of vocal support and the Newcastle players were trying hard to lift themselves to win the game.

Then after 86 minutes with time running out – Owen fed Emre, who hit a wonderful power drive past Howard and into the corner of the net. A fabulous effort from the little Turk and the Newcastle fans just erupted. Emre is back with that little bit of brilliance that put Newcastle back in the ascendancy. That strike won Newcastle the game although more excitement was still to come – both good and bad for Newcastle.

Owen – came on after 74 minutes and made one and scored one – great effort by Michael

But Owen was not to be outdone and headed home on 90 minutes to make it 3-1 from a free kick from – guess who? … Emre. So the two substitutes had a goal and assist in the last 15 minutes. So game over?

No, we managed to let a goal in with a minute to go in added time and again through some sloppiness in defense. The ball looped over Given after a deflection off Smith and Shay could only touch the ball into the net. It was given as an own goal by Given although the cross was put in by Arteta. That last goal took the shine off the win because Newcastle’s defense was not good today and they almost gave the game away.

So it was an ugly win and the defense didn’t play well – and we almost threw the game away by letting in a poor goal that let Everton right back in the game. But we got the 3 points in the end thanks to our two subs Owen and Emre – but that’s what happens when you have a squad that;s together – they never give up. Owen wll get all the praise for this and no doubt he did great but let’s give some credit to Emre – whose magic turned this game with 4 minutes to go.

Newcastle: Shay Given, Habib Beye, Jose Enrique, Abdoulaye Faye, Cacapa, James Milner, Nicky Butt, Geremi, Charles N’Zogbia, Alan Smith, Oba Martins

Subs: Steve Harper, Steven Taylor, David Rozehnal, Emre, Michael Owen

Everton: Tim Howard, Phil Neville, Tony Hibbert, Leighton Baines, Joseph Yobo, Joleon Lescott, Mikel Arteta, James McFadden, Stephen Pienaar, Lee Carsley, Victor Anichebe

Subs: Andy Johnson, Phil Jagielka, Leon Osman, Yakubu, Stefan Wessels

Referee: Martin Atkinson

3 mins – Smith puts Martins through in the inside left position and he runs through for 15 yards but then blasts wide – a good chance and Oba needs to have more composure when these chances present themselves. That was a a golden opportunity for Oba that he misses.

Enrique sees a lot of the ball in the first few minutes and looks composed and confident.

11 mins – A cross comes over and there’s some confusion between Given and the central defenders. Given should have come for the cross but didn’t and in the confusion Faye cleared off the line. Then Cacapa hacks it into Given and the ball nearly ends it up in the net.

The pitch is very slip and the players are sliding allover – do they have the right studs on?

14 mins – N’Zogbia goes through in the inside left channel and shoots and forces a great save from Everton goalkeeper Howard who saves one handed to his left and concedes a corner.

N’Zogbia looks very menacing on the left ass he takes on Everton players at will.

Newcastle are playing fast-flowing football after 17 mins.

Faye is looking calm and strong as a big physical presence in central defense. Faye is controlling the back four with good communication and has started well.

21 mins – Martins has a chance from 18 yards out but Oba wastes the chance and shoots wide. The balance of the Newcastle play is much more balanced and Alan Smith up front has started very well. Seems like Alan is right that striker is his best position.

23 mins – Butt makes a poor late tackle on Pienaar and gets a yellow card for too many fouls so early in the game.

32 mins – Enrique feeds Milner who makes a good run and gets past Hibbert to the byeline and forces a corner which is cleared by Everton. Smith has a head wound which seems to keep bothering him and play is held up.

38 mins – Smith has a half chance but the ball is put wide for a corner by the Everton defense. The game is even but Newcastle are trying to raise their game.

Then after 42 minutes Newcastle’s pressure pays off when Butt fires home a beautiful goal as he bends the ball into the top right hand corner past Howard. It’s been all Newcastle in the last 10 minutes and Everton look jaded.

The half time whistle comes after 3 minutes of injury time with Newcastle well on top if not in the goals total.

Newcastle reached half time ahead 1-0 through a good goal from Nicky Butt after 42 minutes. Newcastle have been the better team but need to push home their advantage with more goals. A quick goal in the second half is what’s needed. Martins missed a golden opportunity after just 3 minutes and Newcastle have missed 2 or 3 more reasonable chances. Everton havent really played well and look jaded, probably due to their midweek activities. They should get more tired in the second half so we expect Sam to ask the team to lift the pace immediately into the second half to try to kill the game.52 mins Baines gets in behind the Newcastle defense and Andy Johnson bundles the call home. This is just a terrible N’Zogbia shouldn’t have allowed Baines to go past him so easily.

52 mins Everton GOAL

A very poor goal for Newcastle to give away – there goes the clean sheet and it also gives Everton some hope. If Newcastle don’t get 3 points out of this game it’s just very disappointing. Sam will be furious at this hopeless goal to give away because it’s brought Everton right back into the game. Newcastle gave Everton the goal. Terrible defending.

For some reason N’Zogbia has been playing on the right and Milner on the left.

Everton looked to have taken a rocket off their manager Moyes at half time since they are very much alive in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

58 mins Everton are causing trouble in the Newcastle defense and they look very uncomfortable – especially in defense. Everton are turning this game on its head.

60 mins – Smith gets a yellow card so will miss the game with Tottenham because of 5 yellow cards.

63 mins Newcastle are getting frustrated as Everton are getting a handle on this game. The team has to get itself together – quickly.

64 mins – The fans of Newcastle are trying to lift the team and the Newcastle players are trying to respond. Everton are asking questions of Newcastle.

67 mins – Newcastle are trying to come again at Everton but they are struggling to produce the lift the fans want. Newcastle fans are giving the team a tremendous lift in their support.

68 mins – Owen is warming up on the sidelines, in case he is required.

70 mins – N’Zogbia takes a corner on the left and sends it behind – a complete waste.

It seems that Newcastle are even trying too hard as nothing is coming off for them.

74 mins Emre and Owen are ready to come on for Newcastle.
Emre replaces Emre and Owen replaces Martins to boos from the fans.

79min – Arteta switches the play from right to left and finds Anichebe in acres of space in the penalty area, but is thwarted by an excellent sliding challenge from Cacapa and Faye completes the clearance
86min – (2-1): Owen puts ball into a crowded penalty area where Lescott heads away, the ball only goes as far as EMRE and he lets fly with a fabulous strike which nestles into the bottom corner of the net. The crowd erupts.

90min – Emre turns feeds the unmarked Owen heads in the Turk’s free-kick from eight yards out for his third of the season. St.James’ is absolutely bouncing and Owen is mobbed by his United team-mates.

In injury time we cannot even keep it down to one goal and a ball loops over Given and into the net – another poor goal to concede.

He whistle blows and it’s all 3 points but the defense is a lon long way off what we need o do.

Super Owen and Emre . Just the class we need . Shows how tough the EPL is though . We definately need extra class in January certainly in Midfield say 2 extra and bring back Andy Carroll to help with the strike force .

Emre just needs a run in midfield now, get some confidence, that for sure will have made him rethink when the January windows comes around.

Emre should start the next game now – at the expense of Butt of Geremi. Barton may be back by then too, so it should get better and better.

Can anyone tell me why Rozenhal started on the bench?

Shame the defence weren’t great today, was suprised to see roz on the bench, although it makes everyone fight for the shirt I suppose. Mind you, the downside is that the defence wont settle as well, not knowing who the best back 4 is. So pleased with the 3 points though. Tough fixture.

Why was Rozehnal not in starting lineup? He’s been good since he came. Its ok rotating the squad but I dont think the toon are good enough to chop and change to be honest. We need a solid back four otherwise it’ll be the same old toon……………..Great result though

Personally I thought the defence did ok apart from their first goal. The 2 centre halfs looked solid and composed and Enrique was my man of the match. After all the stick Emre gets on these boards it was nice to see him come on and show his class with some inventive passing and a great goal.

Macas mate 100% agree, i was suprised when i saw Rozy on the bench but Faye did very well imo.

Emre is one of my favourite players so i’m really happy with todays performance. Hope we see Emre and Barton in midfield at some point in the Tottenham game.

Also Smithy was excellent in the first half, to bad he got himself suspended.

I thought Emre was unsettled and was looking for an exit come January, but his reaction to his goal told me otherwise. Great Goal!

Rozenhal’s wife had her baby, a boy. I think they called it Luka. I think that’s what it said anyway.

I’m not even going to bother responding to that, if he goes I hope he goes to somewhere better where he’s a chance of winning something and playing in Europe, and not just talking bout it.

Faye & Cacapa looked really good and af few more games together that could be a rock solid partnership. I still think Beye and Enrique needs some more fitness…..
I think we should bring back harper even though I love given I just think he has been a little rusty. If not he better put in a clean sheet or a match winning display against tottenham otherwise Harper has to be put back in…….
Emre needs to start against tottenham with butt….Geremi has looked poor the last few games, what happened to the slick passing chelsea players.
He has went BSA tatics school, “Pump the ball long” says big sam to geremi!!!

faye was immense and the rest of the team could learn something from him when controlling the balls that drop out the air, faye did it with ease all day, while the likes of butt decide to try and play head tennis when there isnt an oposition player putting any pressure on them. i have to say i was surprised by how good faye was. his performance made rozehnal look like our 2nd best ch, which takes some doing the way hes been playing. how cacapa got MOM ahead of him i dont know, he never made a bad mistake but he made a few small ones (missing headers/getting turned) whereas faye it seemed won every header/tackle and was far more composed on the ball

good players are still doing so many basic things wrong though its worrying, you would think pl players could trap a ball, or take a half decent set piece.

faye/smith/enrique all had good games. but did sam not learn from the 1st everton goal, zog on the right doesnt work he cant tackle when tracking back on that side as hes two left footed.

i agree about harper should get back in, shay looks hesitent when kicking and coming off his line and hes hardly done any better than harper did.

again for enrique how refreshing it was too just see a proper left footed left back playing for us that could tackle. makes a change from the waste of space that was babayaro.

our best team imo is starting to look like it could be…

    beye faye roz enrique

    milner barton emre zog

    viduka owen

overall great performance, defence aa bit scrambling but i love how our defenders put their body on the line superb, we should won 3-1 but given conceeded a poor goal which he shouldnt had prob because of his stature but againts spurs we need him because his agility againts the fast paced spurs, yday 2nd goal harper would have save it imo the 1st one was zogbia mistakes in markin, but again good performance and a good win, no complaints, smith looked class so does faye, i like every bit of our performance yday esp emre! bring on barton
