Newcastle After 20 year-old 6’4″ Striker

2:32 pm, Monday, October 8th, 2007 by Ed Harrison · 31 Comments

There is a report that Newcastle may be after 20 year-old Burnley striker and midfield player Kyle Lafferty.

Kyle looks a typical Allardyce player at 6’ 4” and fits the mold of players Newcastle chairman Chris Mort said they would like to bring to the club. Newcastle are after young players with potential, who have yet to develop their skills fully, much like the way Arsenal have brought in great players to the London club under Arsene Wenger.

The report was in yesterday’s People Sunday newspaper.

Kyle Lafferty – 20 year old Burnley striker – scoring for Northern Ireland

Kyle has played for Burnley around 53 times and scored 6 goals. He’s also played for Northern Ireland 12 times and scored 2 goals. We’re not sure how Kyle’s style of play compares with that of 18 year-old Andrew Carroll, who is our  6’3” striker who is currently on a 6 months loan to Preston North End. Kyle just turned 20 last month and was born in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, in September of 1987.

We’d like to see 3-4 young good players brought into the club during the January transfer window, so we’ll keep a look out for reports that identify possible young players we may be linked to. Not sure if this is true but interesting player nevertheless.

Comments welcome.

    cant be worse than ameobi

  • 2 george t // Oct 8, 2007 at 2:45 PM

Young Kyle is one for the future…..a bit raw round the edges but will come good within the right setup which I believe we have…..now lets get him

  • 3 LiamBirchy8 // Oct 8, 2007 at 2:48 PM

id love to get him, i didn’ t realise he was that tall it makes it even better. We need some young cheap players in, 1.5m seems about right. Sign up, Healy V Lafferty for best NI striker in the prem.

Looks like Sam is taking my advice (where do you get the smiley face) . Another Irishman in the team should please Sinead (ditto above)

  • 5 StevieA // Oct 8, 2007 at 2:53 PM

How he would be better than Ameobi I will never know. Carroll is a much better prospect too, I don’t understand the logic.

Unless of course he is going to be a utility player? Then he might be of use to us.

  • 6 Bill F // Oct 8, 2007 at 2:55 PM

In case anyone has missed it, I have been banging on about getting in another striker.

  • 7 StevieA // Oct 8, 2007 at 3:02 PM

Same here. Another big man would be great but at least go for someone like Baptista!

  • 8 john stewart // Oct 8, 2007 at 3:09 PM

stevieA noway do we need baptista as another striker u need a link up play 4 him as he aint the type of striker we need as in a big target man ! And we are looking for potential !!!

  • 9 StevieA // Oct 8, 2007 at 3:23 PM

Baptista full of confidence is a different kind of player altogether. I think he’s worth the risk, you certainly wouldn’t lose much on him if it didn’t work out!

Well I would suggest Klose but can’t see us getting him. We need someone to rotate with Viduka that’s for sure.

Why look for potential? What about Carroll?

  • 10 Craig Allen // Oct 8, 2007 at 3:27 PM

    Bill F – a colon -> : )

  • 11 Steve K // Oct 8, 2007 at 3:27 PM

We’re also short of a couple of heavyweights – one or two big signings (not trophy signings) on the right-wing and maybe central midfield.

  • 12 Craig Allen // Oct 8, 2007 at 3:28 PM

oops – posting gets cut off when you try to get fancy with arrows lol

Bill F – a colon : followed immediately (no spaces) by a close round bracket )

Ed – missed the reflection on the game. Are you planning a post?

On potential, check out Serges Deble – came off the bench and scored a hat trick in extra time over the weekend for Asec Mimosa. Say’s he wants to follow his compatriot (Drogba) to play for English club.

Alreet folks, haven’t been on here for a while. But some idiot tried to oppose my opinion of Newcastle signing Elano, as he thought Elano was POO! It has since came out that Elano is class, he’d easily fit into our team and that we tried to sign him but Monkey Boy Dyers transfer delay cuased us to miss out. Whoever the person who opposed me should be ashamed!!!! FOOL!

  • 14 Neil // Oct 8, 2007 at 4:30 PM

Craig – yes – glad you missed :D coming up within the hour.

  • 15 Neil // Oct 8, 2007 at 4:31 PM

    This is Ed Harrison – I’m at my son’s Neil’s house :D

His goal record is appalling, you’d expect your centre half to bag more than that, although I agree that he would be an improvement on Ameobi.

Surely we should be going for the likes of Peter Crouch, get that Abigail Clancy down Eldon Square she’d love it!

  • 17 Graham // Oct 8, 2007 at 4:53 PM

From what I here (and know nothing about the kid personally) h makes Ameobi look like a world beater! Surely thats reason enough to steer well clear…

  • 18 leo // Oct 8, 2007 at 5:18 PM

    baptista is awesome!!!!

we do need more young talent coming into the acadamy. just look at how badly out under 18s and reserves are doing this year, the reserves having to bring jeff henderson into the team at only 15years old. although i am told he is a bright prospect. good luck to him

  • 19 Bosck // Oct 8, 2007 at 5:35 PM

20 is still quite young, but starting to get to that age were you shouldnt be looking at potential but instead current quality. the potential young players we should be looking to sign if we are going to follow the arsenal approach should be 15 – 19 years old. Never seen the guy play but 6 goals in 53 games is a pretty poor record to me, thats 1 goal every 8 – 9 games, not a good enough strike rate for us considering he is playing in the championship.

  • 20 Bill F // Oct 8, 2007 at 5:42 PM

I agree with most of above comments, would rather see someone like Klose rather than a raw untested player, surely Carroll fills that spec anyway.

  • 21 Steeley // Oct 8, 2007 at 6:11 PM

Absolutely pointless paper talk – BSA has made himself crystal clear in his commitment to the big-man little-man game and with Andy Carroll only out on loan, why the hell would we be going for this guy?

Unless Sam doesnt think too highly of Carroll of course…

  • 22 Nathan // Oct 8, 2007 at 6:42 PM

People complaining at us looking for some unproven talent are idiots.

It is exactly what we need to be doing, setting up a youth base at our club. Now I’m not saying this kid is the one we should be after, but the fact that Mort has stated we want to look for youth is nothing but encouraging for the future of our club. You have to look at the long term and not have your heads stuck in the short term.

  • 23 Alex // Oct 8, 2007 at 7:43 PM

Apart from Carrol we also have Kazenga LuaLua dont we?why then not give these lads the chance to shine, and instead of paying money for other teams promising youngsters try to find a few ourselves.Lets build our scouting netwerk up and bring in a few more talent scouts. After all we have in the past found very young talent and brought them very cheaply to the Toon Nzogbia & Krull to name a couple.

  • 24 Stocksy // Oct 8, 2007 at 7:46 PM

God I hope we are not interested in this guy…….what about the young lad on loan at Preston, Carroll……not to mention Smith, Viduka, Shola, Owen, and Shola. Surely we can do better than someone with an appauling goals record…..we might as well spend the money on a proven goal scorer like Crouch and develop some local lads through the academy.

  • 25 Ashton // Oct 9, 2007 at 12:05 AM

not good enough he is too tall !

  • 26 Flapjack Joe // Oct 9, 2007 at 12:25 AM

A striker with 6 goals in 53 appearances at a Championship club, and most people here wants to sign him???

  • 27 Kein // Oct 9, 2007 at 8:37 AM

Maybe we should get Crouch..? Rafa wants to get rid of him because he hasn’t signed a new contract (ok, these are rumors)..He could play Viduka role quite nicely imo!

I can’t understand why we would want to sign Lafferty when we have Carroll. If we want to sign future prospects, they should be younger (15-19 years, or maybe even younger). If over 20, they should be classy already.

  • 28 Andy T // Oct 9, 2007 at 10:54 AM

How Stocksy – dont tell me there’s 2 Shola’s – that would be an even worse goals/games ratio.

  • 29 Rich // Oct 9, 2007 at 12:51 PM

totally agree waste of 1.5 million pounds if thast the price being quoted. In my opinion you get a young superstar in the making for that money if we scout the globe but wel just head down to burnley and get someone whol never be good enough to get a game

  • 30 Josh // Oct 9, 2007 at 1:03 PM

wow Kash you relly do talk some nonsense

  • 31 Baxy-Burnley // Oct 10, 2007 at 4:16 PM

Sum1 above mentioned £1.5 mill for Kyle?

Seeing as we turned down a £3 mill bid frm Fulham, cant see him going for half that.

His goal record is hampered as Coterill insists on playing him on the left wing?? 6ft4 and right footed – I know lets stick him out on the left! Genius Steve C.
