Emre Plays 90 minutes in Turkey Draw at Moldova

11:00 am, Sunday, October 14th, 2007 by Ed Harrison · 3 Comments

Turkey dropped two valuable points in their quest to qualify for the European 2008 championships next summer when they could only draw at Group C minnows Moldova.

Emre, the creative Newcastle midfielder, played the full 90 minutes for Turkey and appeared to be fit enough at the end of the game.

Turkey remains second in Group C on 18 points after 9 games with Greece leading the group on 22 points and Norway 3rd on 17 points. Tukey’s next game is at home to leaders Greece on Wednesday, and that game promises to be a corker.

Emre - Newcastle midfield star played full game for Turkey against Moldova

Viorel Frunza actually put Moldova in the lead after 11 minutes and it wasn’t until the 63rd minute that Turkey could get back on level terms substitute Umit Karan spared the Turkish blushes. Turkey had the first chance of the match as Emre Belozoglu was fouled by Alexandru Epureanu on the edge of the box but the free kick was blazed over by Mehmet Topuz.

The visitors continued to press but despite the early Turkish pressure Moldova took their shock lead when Nicolae Josan’s cross was headed into the net by Frunza, past a despairing Hakan Arikan. Moldova then frustrated the Turks, as they tried to keep their lead at all costs and their best chance came when an Emre free-kick was headed in nicely by Gokhan Zan but was saved by keeper Calancea.

Calancea made some good saves to keep Modolva in the game but was helpless for the Turkish equalizer after 63 minutes. Topuz produced a perfect cross from the right and substitute Karan headed the ball beautifully into goal with a diving header. Turkey could have the lead just moments later as Newcastle’s Emre had a terrific free-kick from 25 yards brilliantly tipped over the bar by the goalkeeper. The Newcastle midfielder took the resulting corner and found Zan, who had a free header at the back post but it glanced just inches wide.

This was not the result Turkey was looking for but they still have a good chance of qualification especially if they can get a good result on Wednesday against Greece.

Just hope he has no injuries when he gets back into toon.
at least he has had a good work out and should be that little bit fitter for us.

If he plays another 90 minutes on wedensday and comes back without any injuries then surely he will start against spurs. With 2 full games under his belt he will be sharper and fitter then he has been in a long while ,we will then see hopefully how good he really is.i think he will make a massive diffrence to our midfield.Once Barton is fully fit then these 2 will take us into the top 6.
