Martins Stars for Nigeria with Two Goals

10:56 pm, Sunday, October 14th, 2007 by Ed Harrison · 9 Comments

Nigeria gained a well deserved draw against Mexico, when they drew 2-2 on Sunday in the Estadio Azteca.

Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins had an outstanding game for Nigeria and was on the score sheet twice to give his country a two-goal lead before they relented to Mexico’s powerful comeback.

Juan Carlos Cacho grabbed both of Mexico’s goals.

Oba Martins – a constant menace to Mexico with his lightning speed

At the death Ikechukwu Uche had the chance to claim victory for Nigeria in injury time, when Nigeria was awarded a penalty, but he missed badly to the delight of the home fans.

Oba Martins was the early menace for Nigeria as he gave Nigeria the lead after 30 minutes with a well taken goal. The pace of the Newcastle striker was a constant worry to Mexico and they succumbed again on 52 minutes when Martins drove home number two.

But that goal woke Mexico up and they began their comeback and it was Cacho who scored his first goal just two minutes later. Mexico were then awarded a penalty with little over 20 minutes remaining, and Cacho made no mistake from the penalty spot.

But then came Uche’s late chance to win the game for Nigeria, but he failed and Nigeria had to be content with a draw, but it was a game they really should have won. Oba Martins was outstanding for the visitors, proving a constant menace to the Mexican defense with his lightning speed.

    Lol @ Bill F.

Hope Oba’s goal scoring form is not left behind on this side of the pond. I’m really hoping Oba starts against spurs. But I’m stuck between who should start with him – Viduka or Smith?

Monday 22nd can’t come soon enough! Our most complete team yet will be in action and the best part is that this will be the first live Toon game Fox Soccer will be streaming here in America. No painstaking stream searching for that one :)

    Howay the lads!!!

Wonder why he didn’t take the penalty to claim the win for his team and an international hat-trick for himself. He can’t still be worrying about that one he missed for us, surely?

i would love to see obafemi and smith up front, but i think smith is banned for that match for his 5th booking? anyone confirm this?

Hi leo yes unfortuantely smith picked up his fifth booking of the season against everton and i think it was a very harsh on too. But not to worry the duke owen and oba are all fit to face spurs (owen after wed hopefully) and the long awaited debut of joey barton will really add steel to the midfield be interesting who he leaves out with emre also gettring on the score sheet last week any comments on the team line up v spurs ?
    mine is
given, beye, cacapa, rozenhal, enrique, milner, nzogbia, butt, emre, viduka, martins, bench of harper, taylor, barton, owen, feye

Cant really disagree with that lineup Simon, maybe Faye instead of Butt tho? Gotta say that if Sam is gonna be fair Martins deserves the start based on international form, but I bet he ends up selecting Owein based on his trouser bulge for him.
