Newcastle United January target Edmilson of Brazil says he will not be signing a new contract at Barcelona, when his current one expires in June.
The Brazilian international center-back moved to Camp Nou in 2004 and helped them to UEFA Champions League glory in 2006.
However, Edmilson has been dogged by a knee injury which he is currently recovering from and is not expected to return to fitness until later this year, the end of November at the earliest.
Edmilson – recovering from knee surgery in Brazil
The 31-year-old who has been capped 42 times by his country was targeted by both AC Milan and Newcastle during the summer and we think that Sam may have already tied up a deal for the Brazilian in January, as long as he is fully fit then.
But the player himself seems set on regaining his fitness first and foremost. This is what he said today while in Brazil getting fit:
“I am training hard to get physically fit and will be until the end of my contract,” “Personally I know that this is my last season at Barcelona. I want to be able to play again without feeling pain.â€
“I couldn’t show the best of me last year but now I am a little bit better. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to repeat yet at Barcelona the good performance that I had at Lyon.”
“Before the season began, I was approached by the people from Milan – there was a possibility but my knee was not good,”
We’ll just have to see how Sam plays this one but the big man has already met with the Brazilian and his wife, who were said to be impressed that Sam had made the journey out to Spain to personally discuss a move with them. Edmilson was also reported to be impressed both by Big Sam and his plans for Newcastle.
We hope we see Edmilson on Tyneside in early January, but becasue Edmilson is a top player available for a small fee their will be competition. The Brazilian international can play center back and defensive midfield, and is also tipped to be the Brazilian captain for the next world cup.
What do you think? Let us know – comments very welcome.

Comment #1It would be good if we got him on board although not crucial. And we are going up against Milan so it’s gonna be tough.

Comment #2Edmilson would be a great Coup, he is versatile and will benefit and adapt quicker with Cacapa already at the club. A year ago I was not as optomistic as I am now, can you beleive we may have a Brazilian Heart at the Back???
I know Brazilians are not regarded as the best defensively but Cacapa looks quality and Edmilson looks like he will be their new Captain!!!

Comment #4we don’t need him… we have faye, cacapa, rozehnal, taylor as CB…and if necessary geremi can also play as CB… so…why?? waste of money and space… all we need is another LB and AMR…krol and quaresma maybe?
it’s the same with gudjohnsen…we have martins, viduka, owen, shola, carroll, smith and that new french youngster… if we sign them (edmilson and gud) it will be IMPOSSIBLE to keep them all happy… unless we sell 3 strikers and 1 CB (we’ve just signed faye, roz and cacapa, so the only defender possible for the transfer would be taylor)…but that would be just stupid…

Comment #5As long as he is not another MO and spends more time on the treatment table than the field.

Comment #6it would be gould to have a player like edmilson who can play in the mids and up front but i also think we should get crespo.
He would be a good buy and inter has zlatan and adriano. He is worth a fair bit but we have a billionare as our owner and this would cover for this “big player” that newcastle want

Comment #8nightfall .. i agree, we dont really need edmilson, id still be happy havinhg him as a defensive midfielder but i think we need a left back, a right winger n perhaps a back up right back for Beye as id sell Carr and Babayaro. Quaresma would be immense , think hed be a bit expensive though but we need to buy quality as we are short in this position wiyth only Milner.

Comment #9I think you will find that as the quality of our team rises inevitably so will the quality of the players that want to leave . We need to get used to seeing players not good enough for NUFC going on to play well under other teams. I hope Taylor does not go but if another centre back comes in I can see him thinking about it.

Comment #10I dont see him playing in centre Def for us, but rather as an def mid alongside Barton… Would love that, Butt has heart but his lack of class and ability shows at times especially when he is under pressure and Geremi has disapointed.

Comment #12ashton come on give ashley a chance, would you rather have freddie sheppard back, we would have got a superstar but it would have been at cost to having a defence, ashley would i believe have given bsa the funds for a superstar but he didnt want one yet, it would only increase the pressure for alardyce to do well

Comment #14Ashton drop Veloso allready, he would cost to much and we don’t need another box to box player.

Thats all he says, ‘sign veloso’ i bet hes never even seen him play, hes just reads about him being linked with super clubs and assumes he’s decent, which he is but not for the 20 mil they want, i would know, im a portugal supporter.

Comment #17well started life as a CB and came into defensive midfield because of injuries and excelled.

Comment #18If London was not good enough for Crespo to live in, Newcastle certainly will not!
