HT: Newcastle 1 Tottenham 0 – Oba Scores

A great opportunist goal from Oba Martins, taking the chance offered to him by a mistake from Dawson in the penalty area put Newcastle ahead at just the right time.

The game has been lethargic and boring but perhaps this goal will lighten up the game in the second half.

Oba Martins – scores opportunist goal just before the break – poor defending by Dawson

The goal was from a 50 yard high ball down the center, that Martins beats Dawson to and quickly puts the ball away into the net. It’s an opportunist goal because Martins was just too quick for Dawson and had the ball in the back of the net before the Spurs players knew exactly what had happened.

Faye has been a menace to Spurs at set plays and had a header come off the post following a corner from N’Zogbia.

Newcastle must attack Spurs because it’s obvious their Achilles heel is their defense, which has given away another poor goal. Oba was only too pleased to take the opportunity. But to defend will be to play to Spurs strength and surely we need at least another goal.

Here’s a minute by minute account op the first half – which has been extremely tentative.

7 mins The play has been scrappy with both sides trying to get control of the midfield. But its clear Tottenham have come here for points.

10 mins Newcastle are playing too many high balls up front – which is not good given we’ve got two small strikers tonight.

The game has been subdued in the first 10 minutes and both teams are respecting each other too much.

13 mins From a corner from N’Zogbia Faye gets a good close header in that rebounds off the post – very close to a goal for the Magpies from their first set piece.

14 mins – Tottenham take a quick free kick and Keane puts the ball towards goal but Beye kicks clear. It could have been a goal and Given is furious because Tottenham played the free kick quickly when Bale was waving for treatment.

Owen and Martins are showing great speed and if they can get running at the Tottenham defense they can cause big problems. But the balls in continue to be too high.

19 mins 18 year-old Bale has an ankle injury and is replaced by the Fin Teemu Tainio.

Newcastle are playing it very safe at the back with several balls being played back to given.

23 mins The game needs a goal – it’s like a morgue out there.

A wonderful tackle by Beye stops a Tottenham attack dead in its tracks and he plays the ball away.

Cacapa blocks a shot beautifully, but with his face, but it’s a great block by the Brazilian on the edge of the area.

27 mins – Owen gets the ball through in the left channel and a beautiful shot but the goalkeeper Cerny makes a good save to his left. Half a chance. The Tottenham defense looks shaky on set pieces.

29 mins Keane gets some space but a weak shot is easily saved by fellow Irishman Given.

Newcastle are lacking a cutting edge up front and need to stop punting the ball up the middle.

33 mins Emre gets the ball loose about 10 yards outside the area but shoots wide.

Geremi puts a free kick wide to the right but it’s a deflection but the referee gives a goal kick.

The best way to describe this game after 39 minutes is it’s all very tentative. A goal is needed to set the game alight.

Martins gets loose somehow in the penalty box and his shot is blocked by Cerny and Owen following up hits the ball towards the goal but again it’s cleared.

It’s a boring game.

Then Martins gets clear in the center and beautifully shoots past Cerny. Cerny gets a foot to it, but the ball is in the net. Poor defending by the Spurs defense – Michael Dawson – and a typical Martins goal. A goal out of nothing and he punishes the lethargic Tottenham defense.

Teams:

Newcastle: Given, Beye, Faye, Capaca, Enrique, Geremi, Butt, Emre, N’Zogbia, Owen, Martins
Subs: Harper, Rozehnal, Barton, Milner, Ameobi

Tottenham: Cerny, Chimbonda, Dawson, Kaboul, Lee, Malbranque, Jenas, Zokora, Bale, Bent, Keane
Subs: Forecast, Tainio, Lennon, Gardner, Berbatov

Great, typical Keane can’t net a sitter for Ireland but that, that he just happens to be able to put in the back of the net, and not only that but there’s luck with it, what are the chances it’d fall like that. I swear if he was in a green jersey he would have missed it, the plank. I can see him scoring again.

Well at least Jol was right when he said that we’re not in the same league with Tottenham.
Cause Tottenham is a Championship material while we’re Premiership top 6 material.
