Claudio Cacapa – Brilliant Sam Signing

Claudio Cacapa is an extremely accomplished football player.

That is probably a huge understatement as Newcastle fans start to realize just what a class act Big Sam has brought into the club.

Brazilian Claudio arrived at Newcastle United in the summer after a full six years at Olympique Lyonnais, where he collected five league titles and was the captain of the French club.

Claudio Cacapa – scoring Newcastle’s 2nd goal with a bullet header from Geremi corner

The 31-year-old no nonsense center-back has already put his experience to good use in the Premier League and the Newcastle side looks so much more solid when he is playing at the back. This lad could turn out to be one of Sam’s best signings ever – and that’s saying something.

Sam talked to Miles Starforth yesterday of the Shields Gazette about a player he obviously has the very highest regard for both as a player and person:

“Cacapa has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water,” “You can’t beat experience and a player like him from Brazil, who has played across the world of football in the his lifetime is fantastic.”

“He’s just breezed into the Premiership like he’s never been anywhere else, and that comes out of experience and it comes from being a very intelligent footballer.”

“This man knows where to stand and knows how to stand there before anyone else on the park.” “In fact, he can work his way into positions that other people have to run into. That’s how far ahead he thinks.”

“He never leaves himself exposed because he’s always in the right starting position. That’s why he looks so comfortable, and I’m so pleased to have him here.”

We knew Cacapa’s contract at the Stade Gerland was up this summer – and we had a  story on him on June 3rd  indicating he was available along with two other players who looked useful. But Cacapa was largely an unknown quantity in England when he arrived, despite his extensive experience in the Champions League.

Sam continued:

“Everyone was like they always are outside of the club you’re at – I used to get the same thing at Bolton.”

“This time when we signed Cacapa, it was Claudio who? That’s born out of the ignorance of this country. This lad has had five years at Lyon and they were five years where he was captain and they won the title.”

“To go with it, that’s five years of Champions League football. It just shows the quality of the player that he is.”

“We were the first to get in there with one of our scouts. We brought up the situation and I knew a little bit about him myself.”

“We did a bit of checking, invited him over and he flew past every test we put in front of him. He could be a terrific boost this season.”

“We captured him on a free transfer because he didn’t want to stay at Lyon any longer due to his will to have a new challenge in the Premier League.”

Claudio is already showing what a top class acquisition he is, and it will serve players like Steven Taylor well to have the likes of Claudio working with him every day. We think Steven knows already he will only become better more quickly with the likes of Claudio around to help him with his game.

It was also nice to have Claudio score last night too – some bullet header wasn’t it!

Havent had a chance to look through the comments from the main game review, but I thought we did really well last night, albeit against a Tottenham side which looked totally unimaginative and stuck for things to do.

It was the first Newcastle match in AGES I have seen where the midfield were winning the second balls when they were punted up from the keeper, although I can now see why BSA like a big man little man pairing.

I thought Owen and Martins played OK together and they offer their own skills to the game. I certainly think that Martins had the better game, but I think it will take a few games for them to gel together (I doubt they’ll be given the chance to when Viduka gets fit again though).

Nice little game for Emre as well – thank God that injury wasnt bad and that he could carry on! Barton didnt really have enough time to show us what he’s all about, but it was an OK cameo.

I thought Butt had a great game, although the MOTM given by the club was probably too much, and I agree with the Setanta award which went to Cacapa – he had a superb match! I reckon he looks as good – certainly as confident in challenges – as any other CB in the Premiership at the moment. The pairing with Faye certainly seems to be coming to fruition, and with the solid performances from the RB and LB of Enrique and Beye (“it’s pronounced Bay, as in Whitley Bay” – quotes from the man himself, lol) I think our defence is really proving itself! 11 out of 10 on that front for Sam, who has managed to do what a whole string of managers couldnt in recent years!

Overall, a good game to watch and a very well deserved 3 points! I can only feel for the Spurs fans as they must be wondering what the hell has happened! As for Berbatov….it smacks of some of the Newcastle players of old (Bellamy, Dyer, Robert) – not what any club needs and despite how good he might be I would have packed his bags for him and be getting to boot him out in the winter Tx window.

Cannot believe how good our defence is looking. Anyone remember Bramble, Onyewu, Moore, Carr, Babayaro? Now Steven Taylor can’t even get a game – and that probably says more than anything else.

Good that we got all three points. but looking at it objectively we still need a creative midfielder, there was nothing in that department yesterday. January should show how serious the new owner are and his management team are.

Last nights game was absolutely fantastic. Our defence is looking strong and calm. To think that Tayler can’t even get a game this season is just at sign of how much things have improved since Big Sam became manager. Howay the Lads!!!

Sam has really got the defence better that last season and though there is stille some flukes in between, they are starting to look great. Faye, Beye, Enrique, Cacapa and Rozehnal are all class signings and look at what we’ve spend compared to Tottenham 😀 great business

Faye and cacapa looks GREAT last night ,, last season i would have cringed every time our wingbacks got forward , now i dont even bat an eyelid knowing we have those two sitting in the centre .
yeah mistakes were made but these lads have been together for next to no time in football terms .
also thought nicky butt had a great game , the lad seemed tobe everywhere , and is really playing for much deserved new contract , lets tie the lad down for the rest of his carear .

Come on ed, stop giving the assist on the 2-0 goal to the wrong players!
First it was Zoggy (who was already subbed), now you say Geremi?

    It was Emre! 🙂
(and what a perfect corner it was)

Really nice to have him back in the first XI!

What a rock solid central defence we have. Faye heads every ball away and Cacapa closes down all the runs of the attackers, just fantastic and they still need to know each other more and more. Even Roz, who was doing well, cannot get a starting place anymore. In the beginning I was full of joy about Beye signing and Faye was IMO just an extra deal. But now I’m really glad that we signed those 2 at the last seconds of the transfer deadline.

To be honnest; some of you are not convinced now about Beye, but he improves every game; he starts to act calm, but sometimes he needs better positioning, but that will certainly come. Faye was already an EPL playr, so he has an advantage compared to Beye. If Habib gets his level he had in France we would be fantastic.

Enrique IMO wasn’t that good, too many long kicks (1 beautiful ball which resulted in 1-0 lead) and bad passes. But here the same as Beye, we should give him time to fully addapt to the EPL.

agree with tawanda,it was a good result and a solid performance but people shouldnt get too carried was against a bad spurs team who defended like newcastle of old.we didnt create much again and alot of wasted long balls.faye and cacapa good partnership but would like to see cacapa and rozenhal together as rozenhal didnt deserve to be dropped, and play faye in the midfield rolwe instead of geremi who i dont think is playing well,he is creating nothing at all.looking forward to duff back to show what he can do and barton fully fit.we have a strong squad for first time in years and no reason why we shouldnt finish in top six, need to just do a bit better away

Cacapa, Faye & Butt were stand-out last nite!..Everyone else did pretty well also, but like others have said; We need some mid-field creativity…Maybe that’s where Barton comes in!..Can’t wait to see us when everyone really gels.
Until then, which shouldn’t be too long, we gotta be happy with wins, even if it’s not dripping with flair, yet!..Lets start kicking some ‘away game butt’ please lads!..& maybe a couple of clean sheets too!..
    …Howay the Lads!..
