Emre Winning Over Big Sam

4:31 pm, Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007 by Ed Harrison · 62 Comments

Seems that Big Sam is starting to appreciate just how good a player Emre can be for Newcastle United this season.

Even after playing two games for Turkey during the international break, and being extremely disappointed that his country suffered a 1-0 home defeat to rivals Greece, Sam still decided to start Emre last night against Tottenham.

That shows just how much Sam is starting to understand the skills of the the little Turk, with a big heart and big talent to match.

emre-scores.JPG

Emre – really starting to show his talent for Newcastle – and seems so fit these days

Sam told the Evening Chronicle after the game:

“Emre has been getting better and better.” “We do worry about international games, but the two games for Turkey were a great thing for him and one of the reasons I selected him from the off against Spurs.”

“When he went on against Everton he looked really sharp and he made the biggest contribution in terms of us winning the game.”

“He came back disappointed with Turkey’s results, but I still thought I would put him straight into the team so he could give us from the start what he gave us against Everton.”

“He did tire a bit towards the end against Spurs, but that was to be expected because it is so long since he has had a Premier League start.”

“Now I hope’s Emre has got the bit between his teeth because he has got terrific passing ability – and if he produces the work-rate to go with it then he’s a terrific player.”

“The balls Emre put in for Michael Owen against Everton and then for Cacapa against Spurs were spot-on.” “Emre wasn’t on corners initially, but with Charles N’Zogbia coming off at half-time he took over.”

“And he remembered where we wanted him to hit, which was exactly just where we thought Spurs would leave gaps.”

As we have reported earlier today, we think Joey Barton and Emre together can provide the spark that has been missing in the Newcastle midfield. It may be rare the two of them play together, but they are both good creative players, and can do a big job for the club this season.

Emre has to be given credit after struggling back from injury, and then coming back into the team to show just how committed he is to the Newcastle United cause this season. We are so pleased to have him back.

Comments and opinions always welcome.

It’s a chemistry sort of thing, get the right combination of ingrediants and suddenly you start to get the right reactions. He’s always been a class player just had to get a good Alchemist i.e Big sam

  • 2 Hammy // Oct 23, 2007 at 4:50 PM

I would’ve questioned Emre’s commitment under Roeder, but such were Roeders motivational skills that could easily have applied to at least half of last years squad. In any job if you don’t respect/like your manager you are not going to put yourself on the line for them when the going gets tough.
It is true that players get managers sacked……they don’t like the manager, play crap…..bye bye manager..
Big Sam, obviously has the respect of his players, they want to play for him and more importantly they seem to like them, anybody see Big Sam giving Milner a big cuddle after the game last night?
Big Sam is one shrewd guy, don’t be surprised to see Emre playing out of his skin this season, if BSA can produce a winning team playing in front of 52,000 screaming Geordies….who would want to move??? not Emre methinks.

  • 3 Hammy // Oct 23, 2007 at 5:21 PM

Anybody any ideas as to why soccer legend Graham Souness pulled out of the running for the Bolton job? (keep it clean)

  • 4 Graeme // Oct 23, 2007 at 6:09 PM

Hammy, its quite simple really – he ainrt good enough and he know2s it. I dont think he has the bottle for the premiership after his fiasco at NUFC showed what a useless manager he really was. I’m actually suprised Bolton would even want him!!!!

  • 5 Bill f // Oct 23, 2007 at 6:12 PM

Hammy You mean soccer leg end, I think you have rather limited any response with that proviso.

Incidently re Berbatov it was interesting that he was refusing to go on the pitch last night. Was he hinting at something, (possibly wouldn’t have gone down to well with Sam though)

  • 6 john // Oct 23, 2007 at 6:21 PM

i agree with the emre article think he can be a awesome player just needs to 1) be very ,very fit 2) gain some consitency. i think if any manager can do it it will be BS.Emre technical ability is unquestionable arguably the best we have almost on par with michaels. In regards to the amount of starts he will get lets wait and see with Barton back on the seen he may struggle to get in the linup because i dont think that sam will play them both together,he also has to play Joey beacuse he paid alot of money for him. What do you guys think? As long as we get results i dont care but who would you play Emre or Barton???

  • 7 nightfall // Oct 23, 2007 at 6:22 PM

    he’s NUFC fan…oh well…if i was a tottenham player i wouldn’t play against newcastle as well :)

  • 8 Bill f // Oct 23, 2007 at 7:09 PM

John, Both, Emre the guile, Barton the steel.

  • 9 toonfan1 // Oct 23, 2007 at 7:13 PM

did any1 see mike ashley again in his newcastle shirt!!! he was laughin and jokin when opposition players do summat wrong as all of us do but he looks like a fantastic owner and in chris mort we got another solid deputy chairman and also with big sam, we got one of the prems best managers so times are finally startin to look up for us!!!

  • 10 Cockney Magpie // Oct 23, 2007 at 7:33 PM

i love big sam so much!!! for me nufc v spurs is the biggest match of the season bcoz where i live all my family and friends are spurs fans and iv had to take so much crap from then since theyve been good but now im lovin it last night has made me so happy!! i dont have to keep pullin out my video of the 7-1 thrashing!! p.s Big Sams a pundit 4 the man utd match 2nyt on itv!

  • 11 Hadrian // Oct 23, 2007 at 7:41 PM

he had a good game in parts , but he was allowed todo his thing due to nicky butt running his ass off closing everyone down in the centre of the park .

  • 12 Howie // Oct 23, 2007 at 9:15 PM

butt was brilliant, never thought i would say that after his pathetic peformance in cardiff a few years back. im just wondering do u think sam will keep the same team or will he bring in either smith or milner. my guess is if anyone comes in it might be smith but i hope he keeps the same side

  • 13 JoshI // Oct 23, 2007 at 9:34 PM

    lets get berbatov

  • 14 Tom_Toon // Oct 23, 2007 at 10:08 PM

Milevskiy has alwaysd been a favourite of mine tonight against Man Utd he looked good, hes the new Viduka in a way

  • 15 JoshI // Oct 23, 2007 at 10:09 PM

was he the 1 in the gold boots?

  • 16 Tom_Toon // Oct 23, 2007 at 10:21 PM

    yep

  • 17 Tom_Toon // Oct 23, 2007 at 10:21 PM

the one who outmuscled vidic without trying basically

  • 18 JoshI // Oct 23, 2007 at 10:21 PM

lol i thought he was shit.

  • 19 Tom_Toon // Oct 23, 2007 at 10:22 PM

you dont get named in team of a tournament if your shit and you dont have bid rejected from bayern munich and lyon if your not a good important player.

  • 20 JoshI // Oct 23, 2007 at 10:24 PM

well tonight he was kak, crap touch and nothing he did worked, apart from wen vidic fouled him, which dint actually work.

  • 21 Tom_Toon // Oct 23, 2007 at 10:26 PM

Tonight he wasnt to bad from the little opportunities he had, he isnt a prolific scorer hes a hold up player and tbh the quality around him was quite shocking

  • 22 valle // Oct 23, 2007 at 10:36 PM

Emre does seem to play with heart, and we all know he can back it up with skill, so i expect him to be in our team next season even tho i dont expect him to be a starter… However i DONT like the following quote from Martins

Martins said: “If Sam Allardyce is here for five years I’ll be here for five years.”

Thats a load of bull!!!… I want players that play for Newcastle, the fans AND the manager… not the manager alone.

  • 23 iain // Oct 23, 2007 at 10:38 PM

i think weve already seen a change in emre, he got clattered on his knee early on vs spurs and actually carried on whereas in previous seasons he would of just gone off injured even for a knock like that.

although i expect him to be dropped when barton is 100 match fit. and god knows how he will react to that.

  • 24 valle // Oct 23, 2007 at 10:41 PM

Toonfan1… Totally agree, MA looks like a mans man and a great owner. CM looks like an intelligent cool headed steerman and Big Sam is class, no doubt.

  • 25 valle // Oct 23, 2007 at 10:45 PM

Howie… I really dont agree with u that we should keep the same team against reading. I think smudge should be given the chance in attack till big duke gets back alongside Owen, and if Barton is rdy start him alongside Butt.

  • 26 ToonKing // Oct 23, 2007 at 11:06 PM

I’m with valle on this one, i think Martins will be dropped with Smithy coming in, the rest of the squad should stay the same.

  • 27 valle // Oct 23, 2007 at 11:38 PM

Hey Toonking, nice to see u still keep in touch with the nufcblog with all the fun u have on the spurs one ;)

  • 28 PK-Noreay // Oct 24, 2007 at 12:07 AM

Martins should be playing from start..hes a goalgetter and did better than Owen against tottenham..and i know if Martins got owens Chance he would have scored…Viduka and Martins i say..and Barton and Emre..together..The back 4 should be as against tottenham…

  • 29 leo // Oct 24, 2007 at 12:26 AM

nah come on, martins has played his socks off, the only reason i would rest him is if he is tired.

it may be hard to rest owen unless he is injured-because of who he is.

i would like to see smith and martins together again because they played well along side eachother.

viduka and ameobi are ok for the short term of the club, but dukes is getting old, and ameobi is not cutting it, so we need to be scouting some players to come in to add to the competition and strength up font…

berbatov would be good, what about kersakov, seen him play a few times, i think he is good, strong and fast… would he leave seville for newcastle though?

i also like anelka and kevin davis, davis would be better than shola

  • 30 OzToon // Oct 24, 2007 at 12:49 AM

While I am very happy with our home form, I’ not convinced Sam will play the right players. I mean, why would you start with Geremi on the right wing when you are playing 442? He should have started with Milner not Geremi and got some actual width and pace, ie Zoggy left and Milner right.

Anyway, it will take all his man management skills to keep Emre, Butt, Smith, Geremi, Barton, Zogy and Milner happy. In my opinion, Milners and Zoggy are our best wide men in a 442 formation, which leaves Emre, Barton, Butt , Geremi and Smith fighting for 2 positions. That will take some management.

My fear is he will drop Milner and Zoggy our best performers because they are young so as to let the older players play. Will be watching with interest.
    Cheers OzToon

  • 31 Tom_Toon // Oct 24, 2007 at 1:06 AM

    Yes cos he dont play.

  • 32 valle // Oct 24, 2007 at 1:22 AM

Leo… I appreciate when a player plays his socks of, but Martin first touch is an absolute disgrace, I cant count how many times he throw the balls away needlesly… I wouldnt play Owen because of his name, but because he is pure class. He can finish better than anyone we have and the way he brings in the wings are just genius (He is also English, which hold some importance imo)

  • 33 azza jones // Oct 24, 2007 at 1:58 AM

Martins is the future I agree Owen is a good finisher but he has lost his pace which I think was hes biggest asset. In the game against Tottenham, Kabboul shrugged him off the ball quite a few times. If he is the little finisher he needs more pace. The team a more deadly with Martins.

My startin strikers would be Viduka & Martins, but because Owen is english he always gets preference. Nice to have them both though.

    Question?
Would Owen have Finished Martins goal on monday night?
    Answer….
No he wouldnt have had the pace to get past dawson!!

  • 34 Tom_Toon // Oct 24, 2007 at 2:49 AM

Or strength, sick of this english predujice, thinking foreign imports are the downfall of your national team, face it you got some good players but they are absolutely wank together. Forca Portugal and the toon :)

  • 35 geordie_jordan // Oct 24, 2007 at 3:33 AM

emre has been fantastic this year. i hope he gets a run with the starting XI. he adds that little bit of flair i feel we are lacking. barton can add it too, but imo he is a box-to-box type player whereas emre is a creator.

  • 36 Keep Oba // Oct 24, 2007 at 5:14 AM

Valle….That quote sounds good to me from Martins. It means he is happy with Big Sam. Thats important. Also he didn’t say he wouldnt be here if Sam wasnt, just that he would if Sam is…

And on the question of dropping Martins for Smith next week thats alot of crap. How many goals does Smith have for us? ZERO. Martins has 5 this year and 17 last year. I would go with him every time. Not only that but Smith has ZERO assists to Martins 2. I understand hes English and all, but I go with the power and speed of Martins rather than the birthplace of Smith.

I think Oba and Owen was good together. It can cause havoc with defenses as it creates problems on who you concentrate on. If you hold down Martins, Owen can sneak a goal in with his skill, but if you bottle up Owen, Oba can explode right past a passive defense. Plus we scored 3 goals with them up front. Granted only one by them, but having them up front frees up the midfielders alot. Plus it was their first game together, lets see how they can bond.

  • 37 Keep Oba // Oct 24, 2007 at 5:16 AM

Plus Valle…dont forget…who might have been the most committed to the club outside of the keepers? Nobby…and he requested a transfer (for supposed family reasons, but still). Anyone can come and go at anytime..but for someone to be truly happy with the coach is very important…just look at Chelsea and how committed their players are….were they playing for Chelsea or Jose?

  • 38 Rich // Oct 24, 2007 at 9:05 AM

Different topic here but i watched Barca v Rangers last night and im noit convincen dudjohnsen would be a great buy for us, hes a good player no question but dont think hed bring anything different to our team, id rather see a quality right winger come in in january. I also think Barton and emre can be paired together, its worth giving them a chance when they are both fully fit. Id start with a midfield of Milner Emre Butt N Zog v Reading!

  • 39 Rich // Oct 24, 2007 at 9:06 AM

Shocking spelling there meant convinced Gudjohnsen.

  • 40 JoshI // Oct 24, 2007 at 9:11 AM

BERBATOV…. he would be better than Gudjohnson… just more expensive :(

  • 41 Ed Harrison // Oct 24, 2007 at 9:14 AM

Josh1 – a lot more expensive but he’s a great player and of course big big supporter of Newcastle.

  • 42 JoshI // Oct 24, 2007 at 9:17 AM

lol… he is such a good player to watch though, he would create more skill up front, he can score and place cutting through balls. Lets buy him!! im sure he would be worth the money as long as we keep him motivated.

  • 43 steve // Oct 24, 2007 at 9:22 AM

so who do we get rid of if we bring Berbatov in – he’s def gonna want to start as striker so that means getting rid of Owen, Viduka or Martins ( I aint counting Ameobi) – it would be really strange to see both martins and owen on the bench

  • 44 JoshI // Oct 24, 2007 at 9:24 AM

Or we just buy him as a alternative to Viduka ( who is getting old ) so they can alternate like Martins and Owen have been doing, and because he is so good he can fit in for any of them if they are unfit :D and we can sell Ameobi anyway.

  • 45 Dingo // Oct 24, 2007 at 9:34 AM

I would like to see Berbatov and Sean Wright-Phillips in the black n white in 2008.

  • 46 JoshI // Oct 24, 2007 at 9:46 AM

I can’t see wright-phillips leaving chelsea now he is getting games and is shining for England, he is in his comfort zone, why leave? Whereas Berbatov is pissed off with Jol because he is a shit manager, he pissed off because he isn’t scoring, hes pissed off becuase spurs are a shit team at the moment, however we are not :D he may leave if we give a good offer.

  • 47 yemozone // Oct 24, 2007 at 9:49 AM

is not coming anyway.B’cos man u is also chasing him

  • 48 JoshI // Oct 24, 2007 at 9:53 AM

I don’t see why man u would be after him :S they are scoring goals with tevez and rooney (4 goals each game for their last 3 games) they don’t need him, we do when Ameobi leaves in January.

  • 49 valle // Oct 24, 2007 at 10:02 AM

Keep Oba… I was counting on u to respond to that post :P … Regarding the quote, as u urself mention Chelsea i will bring im up to. They have several players who dont want to play for them anymore because their manager left. Where does that leave the fans???, i think a player should play for his club as a whole and not not only for the manager… Regarding Owen vs Martins, we just have to agree to disagree because imo Owen and Viduka (if fit) is by far our strongest attack and when duke is not fit Smith gives us some of the power and strengt that duke provides whereas Martins time after time miscontrols and throw possesion away.

    Azza Jones…

Question: Would Martins have won us the game against Wigan?

Answer: No, because he wouldnt have the poacher instinct of Owen to know where the ball would end up. (I know that Oba was the provider, but keep in mind we’re talking finishing now)

  • 50 nightfall // Oct 24, 2007 at 10:09 AM

i’d bring berbatov for shola and owen… owen’s weak and lost his pace…he’s a good finisher but is that enough for EPL? we all saw it’s not… perhaps against wigan (against bramble)…but not against tottenham, chelsea, man utd, arsenal, liverpool…not against those defenders…

  • 51 JoshI // Oct 24, 2007 at 10:13 AM

To be honest Berbatov is probably just as good a finisher as owen, and he has the strength and skill to beat the top 4 defenders.

  • 52 nightfall // Oct 24, 2007 at 10:15 AM

    JoshI – agree…the fact is owen can’t create chances…

  • 53 JoshI // Oct 24, 2007 at 10:19 AM

No exactly, and Berbatov will probably cost a similar amount to Owen in Price and contract….. so why not? Owen is good, but Berbatov is better and can contribute more as a striker in the sense that he can play others in with his quality through balls and high skill level, Owen just can’t do that.

  • 54 ToonKing // Oct 24, 2007 at 10:52 AM

You guys are killing me with this Martins Owen debate, don’t get me wrong i love Martins he’s a tremendous player for us but he will never be as good as Owen.

Owen at 22 was a superstar and although he lost some pace he makes up for it trough the fact that he’s smarter now and places himself in the good position every time.

Owen seemed poor against Tottenham because he’s partnership with Oba wasn’t working, Oba likes to drop back and then come from behind to take defenders head on. Owen needs a big man. As for the guy who was saying a pairing of Owen and Smithy is crap…..Smithy doesn’t need to score, if he can get 8-10 goals that would be great, he needs to hold the ball up and he did that brilliantly when paired with Martins. Given proper service Owen can easily get us 20-25 goals a season.
Martins will get us plenty of chances, there is no doubt about that, but he can’t put them away as Owen can.
Martins has speed, power and a tremendous shoot but is very frustrating at times and Owen is a much more complete player.
Owen when fit needs to always start ahead of Oba, not because he’s english but because he’s simply the better player.

  • 55 valle // Oct 24, 2007 at 11:43 AM

Toonking… Couldnt have said it better myself… Spot on mate

  • 56 Tom_Toon // Oct 24, 2007 at 12:27 PM

Sell Owen + Shola buy a big striker for Martins – Berbatov, Milevskiy one of those types and its sorted.

Then a back up LB (Krol) and RB (Tiendaali)
A playmaker (Kahlenberg pls or Guti) and a Right Winger (wouldnt mind Nicolita or maybe Castelen if hes willing to move)

  • 57 Tom_Toon // Oct 24, 2007 at 12:32 PM

Wouldnt be opposed to Younis Mahmood tall strong striker.

  • 58 rich // Oct 24, 2007 at 12:51 PM

i have to admit i was one of many who had written Emre off at the start of this season, very un-impressed with his performances over the past year (before this season) but it seems Big Sam, as usual is bringing out the best.

Does anyone know why Zog was brought off? he played well… did he have a niggle??

weakest link on Monday was Enrique IMO, im not saying he had a bad game but hes obviously still settling in, i think Sam needs to get him to pass it aong the floor more, even though him punting it up the field resulted in a goal i prefer to see good passing along the floor.

  • 59 nightfall // Oct 24, 2007 at 12:58 PM

enrique the weakest link??? wtf?? he played very well… we attacked from the left the whole match…he started every action, made an assist and ran more the anybody…
