Newcastle Reserves Beaten 2-1 by Liverpool

Shola Ameobi played the full game for Newcastle United reserves and Celestine Babayaro got 67 minutes under his belt, as he played his first game for any Newcastle team since early March. Babayaro has been struggling with a persistent groin strain.

However, Newcastle were beaten 2-1 by Liverpool in their first away defeat of the season.

Celestine Babayaro – played for 67 minutes for Newcastle Reserves at Liverpool

Australian winger Harry Kewell put Liverpool in front from a Sebastian Leto corner which he headed home nicely. Kewell is another player coming back after a rather lengthy injury.

Newcastle youngster Jonny Godsmark leveled the scores just 3 minutes before half time, when he capitalized on a Ronald Huth error. Jonny raced clear through on goal and made no mistake, when he put the ball nicely past Liverpool goalkeeper Martin.

Liverpool however prevailed and unfortunately for Newcastle it was a rare mistake from Magpies goalkeeper Fraser Forster, who fumbled the ball and Jordy Brouwer converted easily from close range.

The win takes Liverpool Reserves above Newcastle in the league on goal difference, and they still have a game in hand on Newcastle. Newcastle fell to 5th place out of 10 teams in the Barclays Reserve League North.

Teams:

Liverpool Reserves: Martin, Darby, Insua, Kelly, Huth, Spearing, Plessis, Lindfield (Pacheco 82), El Zhar, Kewell (Brouwer 46 (Putterill 89)), Leto

Newcastle United Reserves: Forster, Bertram (Francis 61), Babayaro (Lough 67), Doninger (Danquah 82), Edgar, Morris, Lua Lua, Pattison, Ameobi, Godsmark, Troisi

Referee: I K Scarr
Attendance: 3,171

So does this mean that Shola will be ridin’ the pine on Saturday at Majeski? The Duke is only striker out at the moment, right? I say start Smith and Martins. Bring Owen on to relieve Oba, if necessary. Or perhaps take Smith out and go with Owen and Oba. They did work pretty well together against Wigan in the short time that they were on the pitch together.

if duke is out i’d go with martins owen again and give them more time to gel. Bring smith on mid second half for one of them. i think ameobi has to really be banging in alot of goals for the reserves before we give him another first team chance.

watched the game as it was on LTV which was free to view last night. Nothing in the game to shout about really. Thought LuaLua looked pretty good, apart from sliping over about 5 times. Godsmark look very good, only 18 he’s got pace and can finish well another one for the future. Troisi looked not bad either, good little run for the assisit even though the final ball was poor it still managed to find his man.

Amoebi was poor his first touch is wank and he can’t beat players. He was playing against 17 and 18 year olds and look a bit out of place. Babayaro didn’t look too bad, considering it was his first game in a while, not touching enrique though.

Forster made a mistake for there second goal, but a lot of young keepers make mistakes.
