Sam Allardyce has already decided he is not going to risk Mark Viduka against Reading at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday afternoon, even though the Australian target man is close to being fit again.
Mark has been out with a calf strain he picked up in training a few weeks back and has had to sit out the last two winning home games against Everton and Spurs.
Mark Viduka – Aussie will not be risked by Big Sam until he’s been in training for a week
Big Sam prefers to have Mark put in some training before he is put back into the squad because Sam is only too aware that pitching the Aussie back against reading when he hasn’t trained is asking for another potential injury and he wants to get the big man fully fit again.
The Newcastle boss told Newcastle World TV this afternoon.
“We will not risk Mark Viduka even though he is close to being fit,”
“I want him now to get fit and then have at least a full week of training with the players before we consider him for selection again.â€Â “But, even though Mark is missing, Alan Smith is returning from suspension and gives us options.â€
“On top of that we’ve got Shola Ameobi getting a run-out for the reserves on Thursday night and it’s important to get him up to speed.”
We have a sneaking suspicion that Alan Smith will start up front with Oba Martins on Saturday. That will mean Michael Owen will start on the bench. But if you have to choose between Owen and Martins after Monday night’s display the nod has got to go to Martins, who had another good game for the club, causing the Tottenham defense all kinds of anziety at the back.
Alan Smith had a good game against Everton up front, so we think he’ll start with Oba up front. Whether Ameobi also joins Michael on the bench is questionable, but will depend some on how long he plays for the Newcastle reserves at Liverpool tonight. If he is to play on Saturday you would think he’s get no more than a half tonight.
Check out our Newcastle United Forum and let us know what team you think should start for us on Saturday. Should Michael strart and who should start in midfield? We’ll have our preview tomorrow morning when we’ll have the expected team.
