Viduka Out for Reading – Owen on Bench

Sam Allardyce has already decided he is not going to risk Mark Viduka against Reading at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday afternoon, even though the Australian target man is close to being fit again.

Mark has been out with a calf strain he picked up in training a few weeks back and has had to sit out the last two winning home games against Everton and Spurs.

Mark Viduka
– Aussie will not be risked by Big Sam until he’s been in training for a week

Big Sam prefers to have Mark put in some training before he is put back into the squad because Sam is only too aware that pitching the Aussie back against reading when he hasn’t trained is asking for another potential injury and he wants to get the big man fully fit again.

The Newcastle boss told Newcastle World TV this afternoon.

“We will not risk Mark Viduka even though he is close to being fit,”

“I want him now to get fit and then have at least a full week of training with the players before we consider him for selection again.”  “But, even though Mark is missing, Alan Smith is returning from suspension and gives us options.”

“On top of that we’ve got Shola Ameobi getting a run-out for the reserves on Thursday night and it’s important to get him up to speed.”

We have a sneaking suspicion that Alan Smith will start up front with Oba Martins on Saturday.  That will mean Michael Owen will start on the bench. But if you have to choose between Owen and Martins after Monday night’s display the nod has got to go to Martins, who had another good game for the club, causing the Tottenham defense all kinds of anziety at the back.

Alan Smith had a good game against Everton up front, so we think he’ll start with Oba up front. Whether Ameobi also joins Michael on the bench is questionable, but will depend some on how long he plays for the Newcastle reserves at Liverpool tonight. If he is to play on Saturday you would think he’s get no more than a half tonight.

Check out our Newcastle United Forum and let us know what team you think should start for us on Saturday. Should Michael strart and who should start in midfield?  We’ll have our preview tomorrow morning when we’ll have the expected team.

Comments very welcome.

Smithy showed against Everton that he’s a genuine target man and him and Oba should do very against Reading, but i don’t wanna see Shola near the pitch.

Shola getting up to speed, if only. I think someone in another blog got it right when they called him strolla (stroller). But having said that I would love him to prove us all wrong and actually fulfill his early promise. Time is running out Shola grab the moment.

A good move from Sam not risking the big man.Id like to see Oba n Owen start again up front , i know they werent perfect v Spurs but partnerships take time i say give them another shot. barton is not quite back at full fitness so id give him the 2nd half v Reading.

team id go with is :

    Given
    Beye Faye Cacapa Enrique
    Milner Butt Emre N Zogbia
    Owen Martins

Subs: Harper, Barton, Smith, Rozenthal, Geremi

    Thats some bench!

Shola should get out of our club now,he is a complete waste of space that lanky tool.
I think it would be wise to leave Owen on the bench at the weekend and go with martins and smith up front.
Fingers crossed we can get the 3 points and keep pushing up the table.

benth harper owen rozehnal barton milner

what a team, and what a bench, we need a strong physical team out, otherwise i would put milner and owen straight into the team with smith and geremi giving way, but with this team we can nick a goal and defend, or if we need a goal in the second half, we can bring a whole host of players on and change our style tactics of play, and give fresh legs to the team

    cant wait now

I like the way everyone has just totally forgoten about taylor. We risk loosing possible one of the best young defenders (obviously richards is in a league of his own) in the country with better teams like arsenal, liverpool and even man u sniffing around him.

Smith can come on if we are chasing the game or if we need to defend a lead!! also i think Butt should have a rest, have Geremi as the holding midfielder and Barton can replace Emre or Geremi for fresh legs and ease Joey back to fitness

I think we should start with the same 11 that started against spurs. It was our best performance of the season so why change a winning team? as for Ameobi, lets hope he has played his last game for the Toon, he has had enough chances to prove he is good enough and failed.

I can’t agree about Martins. Owen will always start ahead of him for me and I bet for any top flight football manager. He simply wastes too much possession outside the box and puts pressure back on our midfield and defence. In the box he’s a different stoty – thankfully – although he has missed a bunch of sitters. Chance for chance and situation for situation Owen will outdo him 9 times out of 10. Trust me – I used to live in Blakelaw.

I wonder how the spuds are going to fair tonight, i have a feeling they may lose even considering Getafe porbably have their two best players out Celestini and Uche, they have some decent players.

    Any thoughts?

Lets hope they lose, im starting to hate Spurs and like Arsenal more now, times have changed.

if owen and oba are ever going to work (and that is the pairing we would all like to see in an ideal world) they need runs of games together .
smith was great for me up front last time , but at reading i can see sam going
4-3-3 with oba up front on his own.
oba’s pulling sams long balls down great and knocking them in for us , can see sam going defensive and hoping martins can get another like that .

Bu**ger no clean sheet again then. Thats gonna blow my prediction of most clean sheets in the League out of the window.

I’d agree that it’s worth persevering with Owen and Oba for a few games give them a chance to meld.

I find it crazy how people are giving Geremi the nod over Butt in midfield.

Geremi has looked average/poor, as a captain and as a midfield player.

I’d like to see N’zogbia given a pretty free role attacking as LWF, with Martins as a striker and Smith playing a bit lower on the right wing.

I’m really confident Charles will score many more goals this season, although it seems Big Sam is a bit frustrated by the fact he loses possession on the attack while trying to take on the defenders a bit too eagerly.

Then again we need a player who’s not afraid to try and get past the D in one-on-one situations.

Yep; Smith to start up front with either Martins or Owen…..

The starting 11 and bench looks strong so it’s important to get 3 pints this weekend. My starting 11 would be:

    Given
    Beye-Faye-Cacapa-Enrique
    Geremi-Butt-Emre-Zog
    Smith-Owen

Bench; Harper; Rozenhall; Barton; Martins; Milner.

Second half replacements provided there are no serious injuries; Martins for Owen; Barton for Emre; and Milner for Zog

Owen should be given a rest after playing a couple of games~Play Smith and Martins up front
I don’t realize how can Geremi still on the pitch and put Zog or Milner on the bench…We should put James and Zog at the same time…
With Geremi’s calibre, he’s not enough at that mom……when playing right side..not enough passing and assists…Clearly he’d be better to play as defensive midfielder…
Also~its unreasonable to put “shining” Butt on the bench~he plays well, with wonderful tackles and control the midfield especially with a key player nearby~and that’s Emre in recent 2 games~thus give Geremi a rest~see whether the performance of the whole team is good or not

    Line-up
    Given
