Joey Barton – starts with Emre in midfield for Newcastle

It didn’t take long to put Joey Barton back in the starting line-up once he was fit and both Emre and Barton start in midfield for the Magpies, for the first time this afternoon at Reading. Owen and Martins continue their partnership up front after a promising display on Monday night.

Milner and N’Zogbia both start on the bench with Smith, Harper and Rozehnal – all of the outfielders could be used during the game.

Reading (4-4-2): Hahnemann; Murty (c), Shorey, Duberry, Sonko; Gunnarsson, Harper, Doyle, Hunt; Kitsonm Lita
Subs: Federici, Ingimarsson, Rosenior, Convey, Long

Newcastle (4-4-2): Given, Beye, Enrique, Cacapa, Faye; Barton, Butt, Geremi (c) Emre; Martins, Owen
Subs: Harper, Rozehnal, Milner, N’Zogbia, Smith

Ref: P Dowd

Attendance:

Howay the Lads – we can do it!!

I don’t like that team very much……….don’t like Geremi on the wing and Oba with Owen up front………..but let’s see how it works, their service should now be better with both Emre and Barton in the team……….

Interesting selection, surprised to see Zog on bench, can only surmise that Sam still thinks he’s not fully recovered from Flu. No surprise re. Geremi.

This will be my last blog till after highlights on Beeb, I assume there will be a post match discussion. 🙂

We won’t have much width today.. i’m waiting for the delayed showing of our match. keke I don’t want to know the score haha. The midfield is set up to win the midfield battle hopefully that will work. Don’t know how much we’ll score today, but lets just say im betting on a clean sheet today for us. mark my words.

i understand this formation completly, 4 center midfeilders to make it hard to break us down, if we had n zogbia and milner we would be more vonrable
because they would want to get forward, i think this would be good because martins and owen can get behind the defence if we do some nice balls over, it shouldnt be hard because you expect reading to hold a high line

Defence is looking better today, however a couple of opportunities have been gift wrapped for Reading, need more width, expect changes at half time

Well, defense is obviously the key for Sam in this match. He’ll probably bring the youngsters on for impact – like the subs against Everton.

We are playing crap. The defence is looking shaky and the communication seems dodgy. We can’t string the passes together and on top of that we have no outlet because they are all centre midfielders and Martins can’t hold the ball up. We need Milner or Zog on at half time for Emre or Barton. Should be Geremi but being captain will keep him in the team until Sam sees he is at most a squad player. I’d put Smith on after about ten minutes and hopefully the ball will stick in their half.

    defence looking better ?????
that was a nail biting first half to say the least ,
jose and beye are pushing to far up to compensate for our narrow midfield .
geremi cant take anyone on and get a ball in and i wish he would lay off the free kicks .
our midfield all seem to want to stand in the centre circle with each other for some reason , fine if we had 5 at the back with wingbakcs , but we have 4 of them in the centre .
can see us getting beat here , id like to see smith on for geremi and have him sit behind our front two getting balls into feet for them .

Yeah Smithy and Milner for Oba and Geremi.

And i don’t know what game your watching hadrian but bar 2 mistakes the defense is excellent.

we must have diff matches on , im seeing balls played across our goal , passes straight to their midfield , lack of comunication , and just general wearyness.
you cant tell me your confident after watching that half? nearly all of their chances could have been avoided .

Every time the defence makes a mistake it is enlarged, I know there have been 2 moments on which they were hesitating and Lita got 2 great chances. But our attackers haven’t produced anything so far (and the midfield for me only Emre is playing at a descent level). Even Given made a mistake and almost cost us a goal whan Cacapa was not coached.
I’m quite positive that we will break their defence and get a victory 0-1 or 0-2.
