Newcastle Must Strengthen Squad in January

Newcastle have a good opportunity to offload players in the January transfer window so that we can keep up the pressure to strengthen the squad – and bring is some more new players.

We’ve brought in 5 defenders and are now playing a whole new back four from last season, but we’re not sure if these can do the job after Saturday’s big disappointment. But we think they can – just disappointed it’s taking time for them to settle in as a unit.

David Rozehnal – must have good chance of being recalled for Portsmouth

Individually we think Beye, Rozehnal, Faye, Cacapa and Enrique are not only good players but are well suited to the Premier League because they are all physical players. Maybe it is just the communication that’s wrong and it’s still true they haven’t had time to settle in.

But we still wouldn’t mind Big Sam bringing in Edmilson, the Brazilian and Barcelona center back in January. He will add even more skill and experience into the back line. And we shouldn’t forget about Steven Taylor, but just exactly how Steven is to get games this season is a little problematic for us right now.

If we really are going to keep building there are at least 3 players we can offload.

Stephen Carr and Celestine Babayaro have their contracts up in the summer, and we don’t think they will be renewed so we wouldn’t be surprised if Sam tries to get some transfer fee off then in January. Then he can bring in a couple of the good full backs he has supposedly been following. Two of those have been Urby Emanuelson from Ajax and Real Madrid’s 20 year-old left back Krzysztof Krol. That would be a good switch of two out and two in.

Then we need another big striker to work with Mark Viduka and share the load with him. Mark is injured a lot and has been missed since he’s been out these last couple of games. So why wouldn’t we try to bring in Nicholas Anelka – perhaps doing a part exchange with Bolton with Ameobi, since new manager Megson us reported to be interested in Shola.

The other big man who would fit in well at Newcastle would be Peter Crouch from Liverpool, who will not get too many games at Liverpool this season, but we think Peter is a vastly under-rated player. January would be a good time to further enhance the squad with these moves at least.

We also probably need another winger so we have four fighting it out for the two positions. We already have Milner, N’Zogbia and Duff, when he’s fit, so we need to look at another one to bring in. We like El Hadji Diouf from Bolton who had another good game yesterday against Aston Villa. We also like the Israeli Yossi Benayoun at Liverpool, who again will not get many games for them this season. That’s 4 players in and 3 out, and of course we expect a couple more youngsters to be brought in too.

What do you think – let us know – comments welcome.

I think you hit the nail on the head Ed. Carr and Baba are certainties to leave, I like the look of Emanuelson, but not sure of how good Krol is (must be decent if Real signed him). Shola must go, he hasn’t improved or pressured for a starting place, and we could do with some magic that Anelka can provide. I like Diuof, he’d fit right in and his versatility is excellent. Of course, bring Edmilson in also adds to DM and CB positions. Maybe a playmaker too, someone who can get a hold of a game and control it, i’m not sure if Barton is capable yet, but we’ll see between now and January.

Indian Toon, may i ask since when do u support the Toon ???

Shola is in the Newcastle first team for 7 years now during which time he scored 28 goals in 166 games. We have seen Shola’s worst and best many times, and to be honest he’s best isn’t far off from he’s worst.
He’s got nothing else to show us or Sam. He was a good servant he deserves respect but he’s not good enough and for he’s and our sake he has to go.

indian toon- Viduka can hold up the ball better. Did you watch him in the world cup, Held up play heaps very well.

I think we should get 17 year old lulinha. He plays for corthinians in brasil and is amazing to watch and a great player. He plays in the mids.
Or Joao Moutinho who plays for sporting lisbon. He is great.
Or giles barnes from derby, he’s not bad

Players out in January include Carr, Babayaro, Ameobi and quite possibly Emre???

Players coming to Newcastle in January; Edmilson & Gudjohnson of Barca and young RB, LB and RW to offer competition for these positions.

If Emre does leave, expect a prize replacement coming to town…..

hope sam has a good network in s america.. @tommy , i didnt say he’s a starter but a squad player.. btw considering viduka’s hamstring problem over the years, we can rely too heavily on him. once u pull u r hamstring it’s quite difficult to maintain the same fitness as u age.. viduka was the star for aus in the world cup.. he single handedly took then to the quater’s..

Krol and Urby Emanuelson are both left back so wouldn’t need both of them. Need a right back thats young and willing to wait for his place in the team. Edmilson would be a good buy. Anelka exchange for Ameobi sounds good to me. Think we should start doing what Arsenal, Liverpool, Man U and Chelsea have been doing in getting the young talent in, like 14-17 year old from other countries so they can get used to english football at a young age, i’m sure there are already plans for this. Acamedy wise only LuaLua, Danquah, Carroll, Forster and Godsmark look any good.

Crouch will only encourage us to boot up long balls, one thing we should ensure in signing defenders is that they must speak english – there seems to be a lack of understanding across the back four both between each other and goalkeeper, midfield
I can’t see us getting many points out of the next three games with only the possibility of a win/draw against liverpool

W e have to start to bring in better players now which does mean spending if we are to compete with thelike of Man U and Arsenal . I thought the way the Arse nal played yesterday was very very good and remniscent of the way Barcelona Play. We have a lot of catching up to do so we have to start working towards better and better players not just good ones

Shola needs to move on. He’s not good enough to take Newcastle forward & so will always be at the back of the line at best. It would be better for him & the club if he were to be sold in Jan.
At that point he could go to a club where he can play more regularly (which at his age & stage of his career he should be doing) & we can either bring in another established player, the sort that can provide some level of competition for MO / OM / MV.

I think it is too late for Shola now unfortunately . He is a good lad but with my previous comments just not up to the increasingly higher standards demanded by the EPL and CL teams .
I agree time for Baba and C arr to go aswell in Jan past their best no place for average squad players . Not sure about Duff either .

If the Bolton Goal keeper comes to us as the number 2 then who goes from Harper and Given ??. Sinead will be very very cross if it is Shay whom I actuallythink is the better of our 2 Goal keepers

i agree brisbane mag thats what i think should and will happen in january as edmilson/edier seem to have been big targets for sam, whether emres replacement will be really top draw im unsure but hes beyond useless away from home so it cant be that hard to replace him. maybe 433 with eidur in cm for awya games if we can get him. i dont want crouch as a forward as good as he is will only encourage teams to punt more long balls up the pitch which isnt what we need.

i still think one of oba or owen will go in jan or summer with the way sams speaking it sounds like he would prefer it to be owen.

i dont rate edmilson though he can pass the ball from cm which is imo what we need but his legs are gone and hes to lightweight for the pl imo with his bad injury record he would be an expensive risk imo. id rather have campo as at leats he knows the pl and he doesnt get injured often and would bring the passing ability our dfm lack.

i wouldnt complain if by next season out had gone carr/baba/emre/butt/oba (im not saying i want him out just if his replacements any good i wouldt make a fuss)/owen/shola/matty p/duff with anelka/eidur/diouf/campo/krol/briand coming in. i think long term taylor could be a really good rb for us so i would give him more games there to keep him happy.

would love us to get our hands on some exciting young player like lulinha/augusto/hamsyk/modric/nasri/jovetic/vukojevic even giles barnes or young pacy southampton winger dyer.

Interesting study our Shola. At 18-19 he was Englands centre forward. I honestly think he played better then than now and he was called Bambi back then. He deserves our respect, but sentiment doesnt win much, time to move on. Swap Shola and Anelka, oh yes. I notice some chat about Juicy Jaaskalainen also coming to Toon. He’s a good keeper but I am assuming this is agent talk.

shola is another lua lua, bags of potential but unfortunately doesnt cut the mustard at newcastle FACT. end of

only a few players can handle it up here, strange but true!! doesnt matter that hes a geordie or anything, it makes no difference. we are a bit of a jinxed club like that FACT.

Shola mate i know you love it here and would stay until you get your pension, but you have to move on mate to a smaller club without the expectation that there is here. sam wont play you, unless its injury squad related.

Go to another club and be the hero, you’ve learnt from the best.
look at your little buddy going to portsmouth – he was better there than he was here – its a smaller team and with smaller teams there is less expectations and more chances to prove yourself.

shit man you could even break into the england fold! a championship team just comin up, doin well certs for promotion is what you need and they need you. you could seriously be the hero and i’m 100% sure Big SHOLA will come back and haunt us and i want him too cos hes a great lad.

bab and steve? no comment, and possibly no club for them!
i cant see anyone premiership or championship well …wait a minute, theres always a few deluded championship sides that think they are getting superstars when really they are picking from the crapheap i mean scrapheap!

steve carr can see out his contract i think, he will mostly play reserves

erby would be good, maybe he wont be strong enough to play in the premiership??? anyone have any thorts?

who is good enough to come in as our second right back???

steven taylor can play at right back effectively. but i think eventually he will get his chance in the centre along side rozehnal maybe first of all in a cup match then if they do well will get a chance to play more

Come on lads, if you know football and you’re a Newcastle supporter, then you must know that we have to keep- GIVEN, BEYE, TAYLOR, ROZENHAL, CAPACA, FAYE, ENRIQUE, MILNER, N’ZOGBIA, EMRE, BARTON, OWEN and MARTINS. These players are our bread and butter, they just need to gel. They average 25+ in age and have quality and experience. Yes, the first team needs to be AMP’d up with strength and depth in defense, creativity and pazzaz in mid and good support for MO and OM up front. That will cost a bit of cash. I don’t care to speculate on who can come in, because they are not here, they play for someone else at the moment. I just know that I appreciate what NUFC already have. But, here’s my concern: are our scouts good enough to find the right players that are quality, youthful, committed and not injured, also, is the chairman doing what it takes and not let these transfers ride out to the last minute. When you look at the better teams and their transfer policies, they get their players in weeks, sometimes months ahead of the coming campaign, no injuries, youthful and talented with experience. And here we are looking and acquiring, yes experienced but older and injured and injury prone blokes that are not helping our cause. We don’t need experience, we need TOP QUALITY YOUNG LADS THAT ARE LOYAL, COMMITTED, AND WANT TO WIN TROPHIES FOR NEWCASTLE.

Urby i think would have trouble in the EPL as he’s very fragile and too attacking.

My obvious pick for RB would be Glen Johnson, but Nicky Hunt, Gonzalo Castro, Jeremy Berthod, Loic Perrin, Philip Bardsley would all be good choices for a young RB.

Think the post has missed the main points of why we are dropping points this season. Whilst playing at home, teams expect us to get at them and in effect give us space. But away from home, we cannot create anything nor make any openings beyond that of defensive lapses from the opponents. We need creatvity, not just in midfield but upfront. Think we need to completely forget about the idea of big man little man. This only encourages long ball predictable route one football, which is very easy to defend against in this league. Apparenlty Berbatov is a huge newcastle fan, well I think the first player we NEED to get shot off, without question has to be Ameobi. I cannot bear watching him turn in another squid of a performance. We should receive around the 3.5 million mark for Shola. Berbatov will likely cost upto 14m. A worthy investment for an available talented player. As for midfield, sorry Smith but your not a striker nor a defensive midfielder. This guy needs to go to finance further moves to strengthen the FIRST 11 ! Butt is reliable, however his game is extremely limited outside of holding the ball and winning it back. So he needs the complete midfielder alongside him. Barton isnt yet but potentially can be. The wingers disapoint me. Nzogbia has NO end product, his crossing is woeful and he has no vision. His runs are predictable and he gives the ball away far too much. Milner I rate highly, however again his passing is woefull. He also tries too hard and should play more inside. The two lack in areas we need in abundance, creativity and vision. Whilst they are both neat, tidy players with pace, they cannot open teams up, nor kill them off. The entire defence im 100% happy with. The goals we are conceding could have been avoided, by being sharper and more aggresive. These lads will learn this as they settle. I would like to see abit more heart from the new fullbacks, but im sure the league being as it is, they will get used to it. We need wingers and a clever player who plays in the whole behind the frontman, a creative genius who also chips in with goals. Keep the centre midfield pairing of Butt and Barton, but certain games, we shouldnt play a big man to pluck high balls from the air, but a super talented footballing diety that can unlock defenders, make them worry, pull people out of position for Owen to be fox in the box. To conclude I do agree with the ed, that we also need 2 ADDITIONAL fullbacks to replace the (hopefully) outward bound baba and carr. So 2 new fullbacks, 2 wingers, and one creative foward. Berbatov, Shaun right phillips anyone….

Butt has been our best player so far. Crouch is not the type of player we want. I think Anelka can definitely form a very strong partnership with any of our forwards, plus we’d get him for a good price. If we had 4 strikers Anelka, Martins, Owen and Viduka, in those 4 all are natural goalscorers. We definitely need better service, I hope Duff is capable when he comes back and a RW would be class, someone like Diouf.
