Newcastle were 3-0 down after 10 minutes with the central defense, especially Brazilian Claudio Cacapa, not seeming to have turned up for the game.
The defense was just hopeless, certainly not good enough for this level, and were torn apart by a rampant Portsmouth attack in the first 10 minutes.
After just 8 minutes following a corner, the ball rolled out to Pamarot, and from 30 yards he hit an unstoppable shot into Harper’s top left corner giving the goalkeeper no chance.
Then within a minute Benjani went straight through the middle and Cacapa should have stopped him, but was on the wrong side of the forward. Benjani kept going through, easily beat Cacapa and curled the ball past Harper. Portsmouth are 2-0 up.
Then after just 11 minutes, the left the winger got around Taylor easily and again Cacapa is beaten to the ball and Utaka easily takes the ball around Harper, and put the ball easily into the back of the net. Portsmouth are 3-0 up after just 11 minutes.
Sam made a good substitution taking off the sorry Brazilian Cacapa and replaced him with David Rozehnal shortly after the 3rd goal, as he tries to understand what his defense is playing at. It must have been a huge disappointment for the experienced Brazilian – but it was the right thing to do for Newcastle and a brave decision by Allardyce.
Newcastle pulled one back through Owen after 16 minutes. Goalkeeper James could only parry the ball and Owen was on hand to put the ball in the net off Campbell. But the goal is given to Campbell as an own goal.
Newcastle recovered but that was more because Portsmouth took their foot off the accelerator. Newcastle struggled on and a second goal could still put Newcastle in there with a chance of a point. Both Smith and Butt were booked in the first half. Rozehnal also handled in the penalty area and Harry Redknapp went crazy in the technical box because the referee didn’t give a penalty.
Newcastle have absolutely nothing to lose in the second and must still go for a win. We’d love to be a fly on the wall for Big Sam’s half time talk.

Comment #56Wow! I just got home, turned on the tv and saw its 4-1!, after reading the reports i want to know what is wrong with cacapa, maybe he has some off field problems, its highly unusual for a man of his experience to perform like this so i think those saying hes the next boumsong etc should wait till after the game to find out what his problems are.
As for the game, im hugely depressed and now have to wait another week for the excitement that is – watching newcastle win – its my drug 🙁

im really not looking forward to the big 4 🙁 .
all the talk of a good start to the season is lies, look at the fixtures we’ve had , its been a terrible start to the season.

Comment #60Toonoholic..”wow harper made his first save of the day .. dint he ?”..are you sure that wasn’t James you were looking at. In the reports, it seems to describe Harper as rooted, for most of it. LOL.

Comment #63Is it true that Mike Ashley said, had he been in charge at the point Big Sam was appointed, he wouldn’t have even considered appointing him?

Comment #66I hope we finish in top 14 this year. What an awful performance again. What BS should do is give a chance to players who like to play football and who don’t use the long ball.
Emre needs to start every game when he is fit, Martins scored the most goals for us; but he needs to sit on the bench for Smith who hasn’t scored in 2 seasons. Smith also is a pain in the *ss, because he is always on the edge of getting a red card with his attitude. SMith, Bellamy and Bowyer all played for Newcastle and all were timebombs with their bad attitudes.
Enrique is not worth 6million, I’m hoping that Babayaro gets another shot of getting our LB, because to be honnest I don’t see a difference between those 2.
Cacapa gets all the bad talk; okay he has played 2 very bad games, but before those 2 games he was the best CD we had in years. Now some of you are already saying that he is our newest Boumsong; don’t be stupid.
Harper is how old?? I think it is time he starts to communicate to his backline because he is just standing on his line and if there is a shot he doesn’t react at all. I don’t say that Given would have saved the fist 2 goals of Pompey, but he would have done an effort. Harper as just watching the ball.
Our attitude s*cks and if we don’t get one playing style we will get another bad season. I’m holding my heart for the upcoming fixtures, cause now we are going to face to top half of the EPL, and now we really will know how strong or weak we are. Next weak a derby at Sunderland, I’m not sure if we can get something there at this level.

Comment #71obafan , cacapa wasnt the best cb we’ve had in years , he had some ok games ,
and deserves all the stick he gets after todays two goals . when was the last time you seen a manager make a sub like that so close to kickoff?
Ashley , time to open that cheque book of yours and get us some worldclass defenders .

Comment #75i just dont think sam got the ability to bring us to champions league.he trying to make us a new bolton. with his mentality of thinking our opponents so superior and so precautios and keep changing the tactics to adopt with opponents. that really doesnt work. all these are just my oppinions.

Comment #77sinead dont point fingers , ive been the biggest advocate of giving managers a decent run . im just pointing out the obvious , we lose to the mackems and thats exactly whats going to happen , look at the fixtures aswell , what we’ve had and what we have comming up . we needed far more points to first quater for the season to get us thru the next quater .
do i think we should go sacking managers as often? no
do i think big sam woulda got the job post freddy? no

Comment #79Hadrian I’m not pointing fingers, I’m willing to give anyone a go, everyone deserves a chance. It’s no secret that I didn’t like Sam from the start, but that was just me.
I agree with ya though, should Sunderland beat Newcastle, his job will be in question and it’s only going to get harder in December.
