Mark Viduka Back for Sunderland

12:57 pm, Wednesday, November 7th, 2007 by Ed Harrison · 18 Comments

Mark Viduka is all set to return to the Newcastle squad following his calf muscle injury, and that’s good news for Newcastle manager, Sam Allardyce.  Sam needs some good news this week, after all the doom and gloom following two successive defeats for the Tyneside club.

The 32-year-old Australian has been out of action since the Manchester City defeat on 29th September, after slightly straining a calf muscle in the game at Eastlands.

Mark Viduka - should make a big difference on Saturday at Sunderland

Viduka makes a big difference to the Newcastle attack, and gives it a lot more balance, and it’s really good news that he will be able to get some good training in before Saturday’s game. Mark has scored three goals in six matches for Newcastle so far, and Big Sam is obviously very happy to welcome back his first signing as Newcastle manager, back in June.

Sam said today:

“Mark has trained this week and is available for selection this weekend,”

Short and sweet from Sam, but we expect Mark to start on Saturday and we think he’ll make a big difference in Saturday. Viduka was of course on target in the first North East derby of the season at his old club Middlesbrough, firing United’s second goal in the 2-2 draw at the Riverside stadium in August.

We would expect Mark to pair up, probably with Michael Owen, who is due some goals, now he is fully match fit again.

Comments welcome.

    Viduka with martins against sunderland.

I hope he plays up top with Oba, He offers more, IMO.

I really hope Martins gets a start this game. Stats show when has been given 90 minutes this season he has come up with the goods every premiership match. I Owen benefits from a tired defence where as Martins speed can frighten the freshest of legs and his willingness to chase down lost cause creates chances and keeps their defence guessing. If Sam really wants to start Owen then put Martins behind the two strikers in the role Smith plays and go three three. I also hope Sam is making the players watch the game again…..maybe they need to watch some good games for inspiration and ideas :)

What a fantastic time for him to be back! I was thinking it may be a 1-1 draw but now i think we definatly have the edge to win the match

Aussie geodie – exact team for me too.

Must admit I have been pushing for Taylor to start as it is a derby but I really like the look of that team. Presumably it will be Forster on bench as well.

Looks a good team, would love to see Sam start with it but ive got a bad feeling hel be too defensive and go for something like this:

    Harper
    Beye Rozenthal Faye Enrique
    Geremi Barton Smith N Zogbia
    Viduka Owen

Subs: Forster, Taylor, Milner, Emre, Martins

  • 10 yemozone // Nov 7, 2007 at 4:01 PM

Rich – I guess that is what sam will use and that team cannot defeat sunderland.

  • 11 Rich // Nov 7, 2007 at 4:14 PM

Totally agree Yemozone, it wont be good enough to beat Sunderland, really hope Martins is involved and Barton and Emre get a chance in the middle of the park!

I hope if he plays that barton is fitter than he looked in the game against portsmouth.I think sam brought him back to quickly.I hope he is 100% we need him. my team if he is fit

    Beye……..Taylor…….rozy…..Enrique
    Milner…..Barton…Faye……nzogbia
    ………..Viduka…Martins
    Subs—–Forster..Emre..geremi..smith..owen

A like the look of that team as well Alex, If going with FAYE in midfield id maybe pair him with Emre. As you mentioned Barton is still not fully fit and to play alongside faye we would need some quaality creativity!Looks a well balanced team on paper though mate.

    My line up would be:

    ———–Harper—————-
    Beye—Faye—Roz—Enrique
    Geremi-Emre–Barton–Zog–
    ——-Martins-Viduka———

Subs: Forster, Taylor, Milner, Smith, Owen

  • 15 Cockney Magpie // Nov 7, 2007 at 5:37 PM

maybe Geremi is a better captain than we thought? it could be that there was no leadership in the portsmouth match and thats why we fell apart so maybe Geremi should play instead of Milner good call TomToon

thank god, viduka back will give us a big lift, when he has played we have done well. him and martins up front would have me licking my lips but i cant help but feel that it will be owen and the duke up tops

  • 17 Tom_Toon // Nov 7, 2007 at 5:56 PM

@Cockney Magpie, not just that but alsoon his day he is probably one of the best corrssers of the ball in the world, that might sound untrue but if you think about some performances for chelsea, real madrid then you’ll realise.
