Abdoulaye Faye – has been a rock in the first half, at the heart of the Newcastle defense

In a very keenly fought first half the scores were level at 0-0 at half time in the Tyne-Wear derby. Sunderland had the better chances in the first half and Steve Harper has made two wonderful saves to keep Newcastle in the game.

Newcastle are relying on the quick counter-attack to try to get Sunderland short at the back and 3-4 good quick attacks from Newcastle hasn’t produced anything, although Owen did have a half chance at the right hand post.

Newcastle will need to up the tempo in the second half if they are going to get a win out of this game. The defense has looked solid and defended well so far against the threat of the Sunderland attack, especially against the dangerous Jones.

It’s all to play for in the second half but Sunderland just shaded the first half in terms of play and chances.

But this is a game Newcastle can still win – but they need to up the tempo – and come out in another gear in the second half.

===========================================

It was a scrappy and tentative start start to the game with a few mistimed tackles early on .

15 mins – the first chance for Sunderland as Chopra puts a nice cross into the box but Ross Wallace on the left, puts the ball high over the bar – a half chance.

18 mins – a beautiful tacke by Faye as he takes the ball out of play on the right – Faye looks very strong at the back today

25 mins Norsworthy pulls a hamstring and Danny Collins, the Welshman, replaces him.

27 mins No team is on top since each seems to be nullifying the other right now

28 mins N’Zogbia put a beautiful cross over and Owen at the right hand post almost puts it home, but the ball is played out for a corner

31 mins – Newcastle pull out of defense quickly and Barton moves the ball through for Viduka, whose shot is blocked for a corner

33 mins – Harper makes a wonderful save from Chopra when he half blocks what looks like a certain goal, and from the follow-up Smith beautifully blocks the shot. Newcastle defended well but were lucky.

35 mins Faye is having a great game as he again cuts out a through ball from Sunderland, he’s exactly what Newcastle need today

37 mins Faye goes into the referee’s book for a foul on Jones – he was unlucky to get booked since it looked accidental

40 mins Newcastle need to get to half time with a clean sheet as Sunderland are coming forward

44 mins Harper makes a wonderful diving save to his left from a right foot shot from Michael Chopra, who has looked good for Sunderland

We’re lucky to be nil nil, I think sam’s plan was to get in at half time with a clean sheet. we should see some football in the second half.

Barton is having a mare and i fear a red card if he stays on

  • 2 Robert(From Serbia) // Nov 10, 2007 at 2:46 PM

    It’s been a difficult first half :(

The team as a whole is not playing bad, Faye is outstanding so far, he’s quickly becoming one of my favourite players.

We need to keep possesion more in the second half and the goal will come!

    HOWAY!!

WHY IS EMRE SO STUPID HAS HE GOT NO BRAINS! HE”S BEEN PLAYING FOOTBALL ALL HIS LIFE AND HE CAN”T JOCKEY GOAL SIDE!!! STAY GOAL SIDE!!

  • 34 Eve // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:18 PM

It was a lucky goal, Sunderland deserve to win this match so far and if we’re not carefull they’ll score again.

  • 35 ObaFan2 // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:18 PM

Barton gettin stuck in for a change

  • 36 Robert(From Serbia) // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:19 PM

    come on Big Sam,Owen OUT,Martins IN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 37 Eve // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:21 PM

It doesn’t make sense why Owen is playing. But Sam loves him as much as he loves Harper. The better player is sitting on the bench and it’s a joke, all Owen does is live off scraps from other peoples work and if he’s on form he MIGHT convert one. Martins atleast works and creates his own.

  • 38 ToonKing // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:23 PM

Eve go back to cooking and feeding the kids cause u suck at footy ;) .

PS: Were gonna win this one!!! and Owen will score the goal !!!

  • 39 Robert(From Serbia) // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:23 PM

come on Toon,we can win this one !

  • 40 Dinko // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:26 PM

ToonKing are you blind? Open your eyes and you will see that Owen is steril, unless he plays for England. Martin is much better and he is our best scorer i think.

  • 41 Eve // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:26 PM

Oh Toon King, I didn’t realise you were such a sexist plank. Wake up, Owen’s past it.

  • 42 ObaFan2 // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:27 PM

All the team’s played better this half, Sunderlsnd hard working team under Keane.

Owen has a habit of scoring when you least expect it.

  • 43 ToonKing // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:28 PM

ohhh they hit the bar…….now let’s punish them for that.!!

  • 44 ObaFan2 // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:29 PM

    omg 7 minutes for Oba

  • 45 ToonKing // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:29 PM

Owen’s off so i guess that Oba will score the winner…

  • 46 Steve_48 // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:29 PM

    Owen off, Martins on TFFT

  • 47 Robert(From Serbia) // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:29 PM

    yeeeeah,Martins on,Owen off :D

  • 48 Eve // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:32 PM

Keane’s players are honest, hard working, ours look like headless chikens, they deserve the 3 points. Sams put Oba on with what 7 mins to go. What’s in that mans head. At this rate I thnk a loss we’d be more affective for us.

  • 49 Dinko // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:33 PM

We didn’t deserve any points from this game. Sunderland was much better.

  • 50 ToonKing // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:34 PM

Emre’s off too, he was good today.

  • 51 ToonKing // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:36 PM

Dinko first half maybe, we were better in the second half.

  • 52 Dinko // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:39 PM

ToonKing You are too subjectiv. I wish we can win in next game.

  • 53 ObaFan2 // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:40 PM

Played like a cup tie (or typical derby), I thought we played well 2nd half and maybe a draw and a point is the fairest result but disappointing non the less.

    A small step forward.

  • 54 Dinko // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:40 PM

    I hope…

  • 55 ToonKing // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:40 PM

    Oh crap, it’s over 1-1.

    Well i’m partially satisfied……

  • 56 SW // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:42 PM

What the hell is wrong with this team? A draw to Sunderland is as bad as a loss to Sunderland.

    Jesus Christ.

  • 57 Eve // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:43 PM

I’m not, and I’d be “partially” disgusted if I were SundIreland they deserved the win and a draw might have put off a good walloping that we need.

  • 58 yemozone // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:44 PM

SACK HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IS NOT MAKING ANY PROGRESS.

  • 59 toonoholic // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:44 PM

why did newcastle start playing football after we were 1 down ?
as in astonishing how me dominated the middle of the second half

yes we put in a fluke goal

NOT AS FLUKE AS PAMAROTS !

and am glad chopra dint score :D

  • 60 toonoholic // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:47 PM

ooh .. and another defending blunder and to make up for it , guess another ‘knee injury’ ;) ! and taylor was shit, crap and useless at times … beye came in for 15 minutes and he really made a difference to that right side
and to sum it all , our ex-captain GEREMI
WAS CRAP ! CRAP CRAP CRAP !
rather put in troisi or lua lua !

  • 61 Hadrian // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:47 PM

wasnt that bad a match , sunderland worked hard , we had some good spells when the ball was kept at peoples feet .
there is alot of skill in our team , few of the lads with the ability to run at people and get past them , i know sam love’s his % football , but as a team we look alot better with the ball on the ground . its not a case of wanting to just look good , we actually play better and to the strengths of our team .
lets face it , were not a bunch of meatheads that he built at bolton , we have skill and flair , let them use it .
even barton showed he can really take people on . more ball to feet and lets attack the game .
the defence had mistakes again but its not half as bad as the last few games , we seemed up for it.
the lads fought today and really dont deserve flak .

  • 62 iain // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:48 PM

we were outplayed and lucky to get a point.

sams tactics are terrible after 5 mins they started passing as they realised smith was marking jones leaving space in mf.

we arnt any better than last season thats for sure.

  • 63 toonoholic // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:49 PM

ooh and what a game smith had ! he was our best player undoubtedly

  • 64 ToonKing // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:50 PM

i agree with toonoholic, Taylor was bad both at RB and CB, Geremi, although i was happy when he signed, has not been good so far.

Hope Faye will recover in 2 weeks he was amazing today, and if we play our remaining games as we played in the second half i will be a happy camper.

  • 65 Alex // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:51 PM

we played the better football we were the beter footballing side ,why all the negativity Dinko & eve ok a win would have been beter but we put in a good away performance. For the first time in weeks we looked like a good team .

  • 66 Dalston // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:51 PM

team play still sucks in second half although everybody put in more effort. not blaming the players, it is BSA who needs to get find an effective tactic not his preferred tactic. 1 point from 3 games against reading, portsmouth and sunderland, have not played any of the big 4 yet, at this rate, i don’t know what to expect at the end of the season. I remember when BR just took over, we were also struggling, but on the second match we won 8-1, so it is not we don’t have the right players, it is about how the coach bring out the best collective performance of the 11 players, BSA should go down to earth and find the solution but not sit on what he has achieved in bolton.

  • 67 ToonKing // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:54 PM

We gave them flak after Reading, they deserved it.

We gave them flak after Pompey, they deserved it.

They don’t deserve it now. Everyone played good and the team played good, especially in the second half. Smith, Faye, Barton were all outstanding today.

We didn’t win but the boys gave everything. Ww’ve been booing for a while now, imo congrats are in order today.

  • 68 toonfan1 // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:56 PM

i thought that Taylor played very well in centre defence when Faye got injured but i think a point is fair. next 3 games could be crucial in allardyces reign as newcastle manager Liverpool(h) , Blackburn(a) and arsenal(h) hopefully 4-5 points from that? what do u all think on the next three games?

  • 69 joshi // Nov 10, 2007 at 2:56 PM

    OOOHHH F**K OFF HIGGINBOTOM!

  • 70 toonoholic // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:57 PM

The way things are even 3 points of it .. and i would be a happy toon . trust me

  • 71 Dinko // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:58 PM

We are poor in midfield. Owen tuch the ball only few times, and Viduka had to came on center to tuch the ball. We have god players and we must find way to use them on the pich.

  • 72 Arthur Prince // Nov 10, 2007 at 3:59 PM

I didnt think we played well . Out muscled most of the time and 2nd to the ball . Better 2nd half but defending is still woeful . Faye was v good Smith also . I dont think the Zogs best position is LB either . Barton and Emre not up to speed yet . Harper apart from 1 save was average mind you so was Gordon . I think we have a long ,long way to go

  • 73 Sinead // Nov 10, 2007 at 4:01 PM

Toonking sometimes I wonder if you’re watching they same match as the rest of us. “Everyone played good and the team played good”..for the majority of the first half and a decent chunk of the second half none of the Newcastle players even tried.

  • 74 Arthur Prince // Nov 10, 2007 at 4:01 PM

We will have to play well against Liverpool Blackbun and Arsenal to even get 3 points

  • 75 Azvael // Nov 10, 2007 at 4:02 PM

i think Faye and Rozehnal as CB is a progress in the good direction. Also with Viduka, we are a far better team than without him. I like Owens a lot but a Viduka/Martins partnership can be more devastating than a Viduka/Owens . Not because Martins is a better goalscorer or more deadly in front of the goal but because he has a lot of pace. Viduka like control the ball and with his great ability to make great passe behind the defender, Martins would have a lot of easy goal. Great work lads!!! At least we got a point!!!!

  • 76 Dalston // Nov 10, 2007 at 4:02 PM

solano starts for west ham soon, really miss his service on the right side!!! delicious cross, viduka and owen would like it!

  • 77 Dalston // Nov 10, 2007 at 4:05 PM

we need martins in front when there is no service from midfield, but if there are two good wingers or an effective playmaker, owen will score loads more goals.

  • 78 Alex // Nov 10, 2007 at 4:17 PM

I agree Toonking the team today should be cheered and not booed we played good football today when we had the ball. All the team battled today ,Smith looked good in midfield for once ,he did what was asked of him .Lets start getting behind the team and start giving credit when its due instead of allways being negative .Today was a step in the right direction.

  • 79 ToonKing // Nov 10, 2007 at 4:17 PM

Sinead, thats bollox. They never tried ??? From what i saw every player gave it he’s all today. Point out 1 player who was bad today.

I think many of us have to high expectations of the team. Were a top 10 side for now but we will be much much better in time. Top 6-4 is only realistic for next season imo.

  • 80 Alex // Nov 10, 2007 at 4:21 PM

Whats a matter sinead missing Given already?what a load of crap none of the newcastle players even tried . you really are full of shit.

  • 81 Sinead // Nov 10, 2007 at 4:28 PM

@ Alex and Toon King For nearly the entire first half they left Sunderland walk all over them. I might be biased over Given but atleast I say it how I see it when it comes to the match, half of he are delusional, saying that “congrats are in order today.” and how good we are, come on Sunderland should have won and deserved 3 points, the only reason they didn’t is cause of a lucky goal. ya Newcastle played betted in the second half but like still, not great.

  • 82 Hadrian // Nov 10, 2007 at 4:39 PM

im a big critic at times , but cant fault the lads really , tactics yeah , lads no .

  • 83 ToonKing // Nov 10, 2007 at 4:46 PM

This was an away game Sinead and a big derby too, we fought well, played good one touch footy at times and we didn’t loose. That’s a definite improvement on our away games this season, and if they deserved booing after those games they certainly deserve a little praise and encouragement after this one.

  • 84 Sinead // Nov 10, 2007 at 4:49 PM

Ya it was in improvement but some of ye are acting like ye’ve beaten Man U 3-0. An IMPROVEMENT but that’s it.

  • 85 ToonKing // Nov 10, 2007 at 4:51 PM

That’s all we need right now, steady, constant improvement. Let’s hope we can keep it going against Looserpool.

  • 86 Sinead // Nov 10, 2007 at 5:02 PM

    I kno

  • 87 Sinead // Nov 10, 2007 at 5:05 PM

I know but there’s no need to get over excited. But there’s not constant improvement, there’s inconsistancy and average displays. We need more then we saw today. More then we’ve seen from them for a while. Can know one else see that??

  • 88 Rob kirton // Nov 10, 2007 at 6:46 PM

I don’t feel as though we wre up for this one today, the way we should have been; and Sunderland certainly were.

Irrespective of what division Man City were in, Sam Allardyce was for a long time the manager of Manchester’s 3rd club. It seems to me that he had the underdog mentatlity for this one today. Hang on and lets see if we can get a (0-0) draw. If that was the case, it cannot cut any ice with any Newcastle supporters.

Today’s perfromance was not untypical of other away games this season. Count the shots on goal we had – and tell me I’m wrong.

  • 89 Arthur Prince // Nov 10, 2007 at 7:08 PM

Sinead look at my input . Iagree we hgave a long way to go . At least we didnt loose but itwasnt pretty
