Ashley Becoming Loved by Newcastle Fans

We were told he was a recluse who didn’t like any publicity and that he shunned the limelight. Apparently when Mike Ashley bought Newcastle United in June of last year he had had only one photograph that the press could use for him when the take that Mike wants to see.

Because of some rules at Sunderland, they were a little bit wary of allowing Mike to wear the Newcastle shirt in the Director’s box, so what does Mike do? Hey, I’ll join the fans in the away end of the Stadium of Light, which is exactly what he did.

Newcastle fan Keith Roberts – Beefy – with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley before the game Saturday

Fans at the game say he was just like one of them – a true fan wanting Newcastle to pummel the particular opposition on the day.

Ever since the Middlesbrough game Mike has attended almost every Newcastle game and very unlike owners of other clubs, Mike always wears the world-famous Newcastle United shirt, and it’s the number 17 shirt worn by Alan Smith, thought to be because Alan epitomizes the guts and glory Mike wants to see at the club.

Newcastle United fan ‘Beefy’ had some real laughs with the Newcastle owner, Mike Ashley, before the game on Saturday. Beefy – Keith Roberts, of Brockley Whins, South Shields, saw Mike before the Tyne-Wear derby game. Tanker driver Beefy said that Mike was more than happy to pose for this photo with him. Keith, the father-of-two said:

“He was just one of the lads. He was just walking past in the ground on his way to his seat and I said ‘Can I have my photo taken with you?'”

“I lifted my top and he just said to me ‘Well you’ve got your belly out, I’ll have to get mine out.'”

“It was the first time I have met him. All I can say is he is a gentleman who is one of the lads and just so down to earth.”

Roberts, 44, lives with wife Debbie, 45, and children, Emma, 18, and Michael, 15, and has actually lost 70 pounds in a short eight weeks after going on a diet. Keith added:

“Mike Ashley is someone the club needs, someone who will put money into the club and to push the game forward.”

“Everyone was singing ‘There’s only one Mike Ashley,’ he was not a pick of bother and stopped for everyone.”

Mike Ashley was named the 25th richest man in the UK recently, and has turned out to be nothing like his persona documented by the press, when he bought the club. At the games Mike is like any other fan, cheering loudly when we score, and looking rather glum and dejected when we are not doing well.

But most of all he has adorned himself to the fans by coming over as just an ordinary guy, who seems to get on so well with the Geordies, who as everybody knows, are very passionate about their football.

If you could have thought last April of someone to take over the club, Mike would have been almost the perfect person. He isn’t a Geordie, but it looks like Newcastle fans are willing to let that one fault in his CV go. They just seem delighted that Mike Ashley now owns the club. Who said there was anything wrong with Southerners?   Mike’s a breath of fresh air.      😀

Now for some real success on the field.

Would you see Roman Abromabitch (haha) doing that? I dont think so..

Newcastle United is a special club, and although Chris Mort and Mike Ashley might not have known just quite HOW special it is… they do now

I’ve got to pinch myself sometimes. When I think of some of our old chairman, Freddy Shepherd wasn’t even the worst….

Long may it last Mr Ashley. You seem to be having fun – just give us a team to put a smile back on our faces

i don’t see why pundits alike are criticizing him for doing this, it’s a good established relationship, he owns the club, a fan of the club, wants great things for newcastle united, but doesn’t run it, lets a pro run the club, what’s to criticize about.

It will also be interesting what he reports back to Chris Mort about the fans comments on the team from the stands.

This does look like he wants NUFC for the joy of it. He will make more money from his other businesses but of course will expect NUFC to finance itself long term.

We need Mike to cough up £50M for Sam to sign 3-4 top players in January – that’ll help.

we will see how good mike is when we need to sign players in janurary.and smith should not be in team, offers nothing, guts and glory no good if you dive in on every tackle and get booked and create nothing from midfield.then he wanted a meeting with sam after being dropped for a game.and agree about football being played, very boring, wouldnt mind as much if we were results, but we lost to derby, reading and lucky to get draw at sunderland,3 teams that are rubbish

Good to see him involved with the club, hopefully the fans will instill a drive and passion in him to win some trophies which might temp him to get the chequebook out….

Seems like a genuine fella and you cant get anymore down to earth than showing your gut! One thing though….I wish he would wear a Martins shirt! Or at least get a few so he can inspire a player who might actually do something as opposed to chopping poeples legs out and get shit with the referee when he is blatantly in the wrong. He makes the same face that Bellamy used to make when he got done for being twenty metres offside.

I think we seriously need to play better attacking football. Great owner the best in th world, average manager who play to defend.
