Newcastle Need Heroes – Can Smith Be One?

Alan Smith has given a long interview to the Evening Chronicle, about the current plight of Newcastle United and what needs to be done by the players. We need some heroes tomorrow, and maybe Alan can be one of them.

It’s easy to see why Big Sam pursued Alan, when he was at Manchester United. He is a very positive boy and seems to be a model professional.

Ana Smith – can he be a hero tomorrow?

We now know Sam Allardyce tries to find a place for Alan Smith in the starting line-up – somewhere. But we’d like to see both Milner and N’Zogbia start on the wings tomorrow so we have some threat against Blackburn – which we’ll need if we are to win the game tomorrow. That has to be the goal at Blackburn for the Newcastle team, after the last four games of utter disappointment.

Alan told the Chronicle:

“I think from our point of view week-in, week-out nobody minds too much if they see commitment and passion” “Against Liverpool it was the manner of the defeat that upset people the most.”

“It was the nature of the game.” “If it is a scrappy game people don’t mind.” “If you lose by the odd goal in five people don’t mind.” “But it was the manner of defeat.” “That’s what upset people.”

“But we go out there to perform and the paying public have a right to their opinion.” “We have to be brave enough to go out again at St James’s Park or Ewood Park and put that right.

“It’s all down to us as a squad.” “Collectively, as players, we need to go out there and play with pride and show some passion.”

Alan doesn’t want to predict what will happen at Blackburn tomorrow, but he does say the lads want to put things right, after the last two games at home, which were some of the worst performances from the team in many a season.

Smith continued:

“I think most of the lads are just desperate to put things right on Saturday.” “Had there been an international break after Liverpool it would be a killer. It’s up to us to put it right.”

“You need hard work in these situations. We’ve been through it all and watched it on the video.” “We’ve had to take some positives from it.” “Liverpool had one shot on goal that was on target in the first half.” “And you couldn’t do much about Steve Gerrard’s goal.”

“We restricted them to one shot, but it was the second goal 45 seconds in that killed us and we lost all of our shape.”

Smith took the man of the match award on Saturday and it was between him and Habib Beye, who we thought had a sterling game under very difficult circumstances. But Habib was so good in central defense, we’d like to see him start there at Blackburn tomorrow, hopefully partnering the impressive Abdoulaye Faye. When Alan was named man of the match last week, the news was received with boos, but that was only because the fans were in a foul mood, having witnessed 90 minutes of pure tripe, to use some Geordie sayings 😀

Smith added:

“Everybody is entitled to their opinion.” “But I know that I am doing my job no matter what position I play in.” “Every time I cross the white line I will give 100% and everybody knows that.”

“I don’t think fans were having a go at players too much, the fans just want to do well so badly.” “We are the ones who can turn it round and can’t blame fans too much for being disappointed.”

“The fans went there with expectations high looking for a big performance, and it didn’t happen. It’s not nice because you want your fans behind you, but we must put that right.”

The talking will come to an end in about 24 hours from now, and then we’ll see how the players perform tomorrow. They have to know this is getting to be crunch time at the club and we need some heroes to step up tomorrow.

We hope Alan can be one of them. Comments welcome.

I don’t know if Smithy can be a Hero for us, but he most certainly has the chance if he can play a few back to back matches up front and get he’s Leeds self back.

Smith can be a great player for us.

IF he’s played up front. He never gives up and and gives defenders a HARD time which is more than can be said of Viduka.

    So we should play

    Beye….. Faye…….Roz…..Enrique

Play the ball on the ground and win the Match.

    It’s not friggin Rocket Science….. 🙁

Owen good team, although i would go for the 4-5-1.

but if we play 4-4-2 then Cacapa for Rozy and Emre for Butt.

I like Smithy and think he should start with Martins. Viduka can always lurch onto the pitch later if needed.

Smith is a liability in midfield…you can’t go around kicking people and snarling at the ref…he’s more effective up front….

Viduka is lacking fitness and needs more playing time, his class is permanent though. Rozenhal was rubbish last week and IMO should be dropped for being skinned by Torres with the same trick everytime. Martins was non existent last week toom! My team would be:

    Beye Faye Taylor Enrique
    Milner Butt Barton N’Zogbia
    Smith Viduka

Aye, Smith tries hard and runs round the pitch but we weren’t booing him last week because of the team. Our whole right flank was exposed because him and geremi were drifting into the middle of the park. He’s got the most fouls in the league this season while Butt has got the second highest number of tackles. If it were between the two for our defensive midfield slot I’d pick Butt every time. We need width so Milner and Zog should start for sure.

Martins should be up front as he seems our only dangerous forward and then it’s between Viduka and Smith to pair him. I’d probers go for Viduka as he’s got the better touch, I just hope an increase in fitness will make him that bit sharper.

Scott, smith is a arget man, he creates chances for the other striker and links the midifeld, id go fo Smith and Martins upfront, they looked promising together against everton.

    Personally i’d go for:

    Beye Faye Capaca Enirique

    Milner Butt Emre N’Zogbia

    Smith Martins

Subs: Harper, Taylor/Rozehnal, Barton, Geremi, Viduka

Id like to see Troisi on the bench if im honest, he looks quite talented.

he may be a “a very positive boy and seems to be a model professional” but when he plays anywhere other than up front, he looks mediocre at best.

i think we could field a team in one of two ways. thats 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 in a 4-2-3-1 style. this is because we really need to get some bodies forward in order to lighten up a number of terrible preformances we’ve had. i agree that smith should be given a chance up front but only if we’re gonna play 4-4-2. if we do go 4-5-1 i think he should be a part of an attacking three in midfield along with charlie and jimmy. this is how i reckon we could line out

    we could go 4-4-2:

    or alternatively 4-5-1:

in the latter viduka would need to just have his back to the goal all day, though he is great at doin this you’ll all agree. if we use butt, faye or smith to feed the ball to viduka’s feet he can hold up or flick on to smith or out to a winger, turn and cause problems in the box. i dont know which i’d prefere but i definately feel we need to go gung ho tomorrow, even though it is away. if we create chances gettin people forward we’re bound to get one, and if we’re gettin close and we do get turned over it will give a more positive response from the fans than we have in recent games.

only problem with the second formation is viduka’s lack of match fitness. it might be nessicary for him to have a reserve game or two to find his feet more; just a thought tho.

I don’t like SMith, but I think he deserves a chance upfront next to Martins. Viduka has prooved that he was a good target man, but IMO he now is out of form and maybe he will not reach a good level again. He doesn’t move good, doesn’t win the ball, … Martins was standing all on his own last week (and to be fair he was awful), but I can’t stop thinking that Martins once againwill be the victim. I think Viduka and Smith will start upfront.

    My team:
    Beye – Faye – Cacapa – Taylor
    Millner – Butt – Emre – N’Zogbia
    Martins – Smith

Subs: Harper – Rozehnal – Barton – Viduka – Geremi

For me Enrique can be left out the squad, cause he simply is the worst player we have. He gets caught out of position easily and his footballing skills (I mean building up an attack) is so awful (always kicking the ball upfront). I hate to see that kind of football.

Hopefully things will turn around tomorrow, but what a difficult game it is going to be, cause Blackburn has got, just like us, something to proove after their 4-0 defeat in midweek.

if martins is fit play smith and martins up front if not, it may have to be viduka and smith, how strange that would be though.

To be honest i DO NOT rate smith, he is a good back up. Apart from his passion he isnt worth much to wreckless, dives in to quick miss times passes etc etc.

Dont get all the fuss about him.

    heroes ???

who needs invidual heroes when i bit of common sense from the manager and some hard work from the players is what we need.

noone will be arsed if we loose games weve competed them, im sure weve all seen hundreds of games like that as nufc fans.

what we dont want to see is gutless, effortless and inept performances. you dont need to be a hero to do that when your earning thousands a week.

I’m a Smith fan as he’s 100% committed. My team for Blackburn is:

Subs: Harper; Barton; Taylor; Milner and Geremi

I like Newcastle playing with 2 wingers; i.e. Milner and Zog but too adventerous. Let’s steady the ship by dominating midfield and players playing in correct positions.

Second half subs; Barton for Emre and Milner for Zog/Smith…….

NO NO NO Smith is no 4 striker only behind Viduka, owen & martins
he is at best a utility payer filling only
god i hope so much for 3 points tomorrow.
why is it that when we win i feel fantastic like walking on water and when we loose i feel cap
i guess it the life of a toon fan but once your colours are on the mast you cant change
