Newcastle After Giant Romanian Defender

There’s yet another center-back that Newcastle United have been linked with today, and that is the massive 6’5″ Romanian center-back Dorin Goian.

Newcastle scouts have been out and about during the last few weeks scouting various defenders that Newcastle still need to patch up their still leaky defense.

Let’s take a look at just exactly who Dorin Goian is.

dorin-goian.jpg

Dorin Goian – 6’5″ central defender plays for Steaua Bucharest

The defense again looked too porous yesterday, even though the Newcastle players gave everything they had trying to get some points at Blackburn. Newcastle are not the only team interested in Goian, as we understand Manchester City and Sven Eriksson are also trailing the Romanian.

Last week it appears that both Premiership teams had their scouts watching Goian in the Champions League action for Steaua Bucharest in midweek. But Steaua look to be on their way out of competition after Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against Slavia Prague, and it may be that Goian will become available in January.

The Romanian is rated at £3.5M and the 26-year-old is good in the air as both a defender and in set plays too. He seems the exact player Sam will need to shore up Newcastle’s defense, which has been surprisingly weak in the air, when Abdoulaye Faye is out. It is also thought that Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund and Stuttgart have also monitored the Romanian.

Dorin Nicolae Goian was born in December, 1980 in Suceava, Romania. He is renowned for scoring goals even though he is a center-back. He has played 63 times for Steaua Bucuresti since 2004, but has scored just 3 goals. He is a Romanian international having played for his country 17 times and scored 3 goals.

His previous clubs include NC Foresta Suceava, FCM Bacău and Ceahlăul Piatra NeamÅ£. Dorin has played over 200 first class games and scored more than 12 goals. Dorin Goian is known by Steaua’s fans as “Goe”, a nickname derived from his given name.

Is this player who we need in January? Bear in mind he has no Premiership experience and presumably will need some time to settle in, just like the defenders we already brought to the club in the summer. Let us know.

Comments always welcome.

I heard about Oba threatening to quit, and as much as I love Newcastle I can’t blame him. He kept us in the premiership last season and BSA’s die hard loyalty to Michael Owen has screwed us over 1 time too many. BSA came in saying “If you don’t perform you don’t play.” But Oba performs and performs and still plays second fiddle to underachieving Michael Owen and Mark Viduka. Anyone who watched the game last night knows the forward 2 should be Oba and Alan Smith. They played amazingly well together

the only decent premier league center halves we could attract right now would be woodgate and maybe but unlikely samba/nelson/yobo.

there not much else tbh in terms of quality ch in the pl.

garcias an alright playe but hes not an out and out goalscorer, id rather have tamudo hes spains most underated cf and a better finisher than owen.

ive been hearng that newcastle want to buy phillipe mexes of roma? does any1 no if theres any truth in that because i think he would b an awesome buy personally.
as for goian, dunno if we need him, i can c him performin gr8 for a while because every1 may b intimidated by him for a while till they work out that hes not the best defender around. our defence is gr8, we need to work on our centre midfield, holding midfield mainly, as opponents walk through there and leave the defence to deal with everything, which doesnt help, look at how much work chelsea, man city liverpool and arsenals defense do and ull c that oursdoes twice the amount.

Oba martins COULD have won us that game but didn’t he is shite and does not deserve to play in a black and white shirt until he starts putting away the EASY chances he gets every game

This Goian is crap. Although not romanian i live in Romania (after 2 years in the glorious Newcastle upon Tyne 😉 ) and seen him countless times. He’s decent in the air but waaay to slow and nowhere near our standards.

The one mentioned by Tom_Tom, Mirel Radoi, now he could be good as a DM but as a centre half he’s too short.

No. Personally, if I could choose 3 players that we’d sign in January (realistically) I’d go for Ben Haim, the 18 year-old American striker wossisname, and…..and, oh heck uhm…Guti!

There is lots of players we could need but the main thing is creativity id proabably go for Alexei Eremenko jr as a cheap alternative o arshavin but probably just as good.

Wasn’t it Mexes who got roasted against Manu in that game last year. Did better this year though.

Micepie, do you mean Altidore. I have a problem with names what happened to those others on the wish list Chiquiwottsit and Cardtossa.

Chikhaoui looks like hes going to ajax, bayern or inter.

Eremenko is good, duno if he can play the killer pass but has good skil, rethinkig this id go for arda turan, can play right wing, left wing and centre attacking midfield and unlike alot of wingers these das that have skill, can cross the ball well and can pick out killer passes like a playmaker. Hes the one signing we desperately need which is a right winger/playmaker.

There is a common theme here of buying oscure players with no comment on how you would play them or how they would fit in to the team. Sums up our transfer policy since Robson left. I might try for Huth on the cheap from the Smogs. Old fashioned English CB, will likely make Germany squad for Euros. Would allow Faye to take midfield role so we defend right across the park. A quality RB would be a good idea. Thats it. We need to focus on using the players weve got.

Zero Cool….Ummm Smith is useless. He is neither a forward or mid. He has started about 15 games for us and has not scored a premier league goal yet so how is he a striker. Viduka was a mistake he is old and past it. Crouch and Oba would be amazing

think it isnt the case that we can’t get good defenders, instead we’ve made the good ones look mediocre and fair ones look crap – not sure why though. Rozehnal and Cacapa can’t hardly be said as bad defenders at French top flight for yrs; on 1-to-1 comparison they can’t be much worse than Albert and Howey; worst flop Boumsong was saved from us by the Old Lady who seldom pays to take bad players onboard. even for Woodgate, what a good CB he has been, was almost destroyed by endless injuries at SJP. what i wanna say is, there’s something fundamentally wrong with the system on and/or off the field, may it be the coach, his tactics, the backroom staff, or the rehab and training facilities or whatever … not the inability to snap up a couple defenders. even Messi / Ronaldinho / Canavaro at their peaks all join can’t take us up to par with Arse or Manu if we don’t face it. the problem is, can anyone at the club tell us what exactly is wrong? or do they know?

Can’t see why Howey and Albert are being put down they were two of our best past players, Howey suffered the persistent Toon injury curse which blighted his career, don’t forget he actually was deemed good enough to get an England cap (or more?)

    Another recycled comment,
I would disagree, I think we have had decent defenders but they have never played to a regular system and have never known what to do. This is why I keep banging on about a good defensive coach.
imo I do not think Manu, Liverpool or Arsenal had better (collectively) defenders in the past they have just consistently played to a system that has worked .

Italian league teams seem to know how to do it you seldom see their teams getting thrashed (Roma was an anomaly).

Unbelievable ! We are thanking players earning around £50,000 a week for giving 100% effort against Blackburn.
Barton asks for patience, how about waiting since my first game in 1955 for anything other than a couple of great cup runs with players of limited ability but 100% passion. Will this patience extend to his time on the sidelines when the useless thug is jailed after his last assault, and no doubt we’ll continue paying him.
