HT: Newcastle 1 Birmingham 1: Newcastle Fight Back

Birmingham started well and had a lot of territorial advantage early in the game and there seemed to be some tension with the St. James’ Park faithful, because they know this is a must win game.

Then after 9 minutes and a good start by Birmingham they went surprisingly ahead with a terrible goal conceded by Newcastle. Rafael Schmitz placed a long ball forward which David Rozehnal defends badly, as he somehow allows the ball to roll across him and he is then out-paced by Cameron Jerome who rounds Shay Given to score. A terrible goal for Newcastle to concede.

Newcastle up front seem to be lacking in ideas and the Birmingham back four far are far too comfortable in the first 20 minutes. Nicky Butt has started well but takes a ball in the face and after 31 minutes Mark Viduka is brought on to replace Nicky Butt.

Then after 36 minutes Newcastle get a penalty when referee Rob Styles adjudged Mathew Sadler to have brought down Martins. Martins takes the kick himself but Mathew Taylor gets a hand to the ball and is a little unlucky not to have saved it.

Oba Martin’s penalty is his 7th goal of the season

This is a good goal for Newcastle because it brings them right back into the game. We thought Geremi was the penalty taker but that’s Martins 7th goal of the season - good for him.

Towards the end of the half Newcastle are pressing hard, and seem to have Birmingham rocked and a corner is saved well by Taylor but then Milner crashes the ball against the cross-bar as Birmingham are hanging on.

The half time whistle goes after just one minute of added time.

The teams go in level at 1-1. After a rather slow start Newcastle have done well to come back into the game after giving away another terrible goal after just 9 minutes. But towards the end of the half Newcastle seemed to be playing a lot better and had the Birmingham goal under a lot of pressure with Milner rattling the cross bar just before the break.

In the second half Newcastle must drive home their advantage with goals. After giving away an early goal Newcastle can now win this game with an up tempo performance in the second half.

    great tackle Beye

  • 4 Eve // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:17

Great were just as flat as we were at the start of the first half, Jerome could have done better. Larsson and Jerome combined, it started in midfield. Jerome hit a snap shot but it only manages to hit the side netting, but it was all too easy. Lads I know it’s a bit much to ask for but how about some defending??

  • 5 JJ // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:18

Ashton are you retarded, Milner and Geremi both had great games againt Arsenal.
The only disappointment has been Viduka up front instead of Smith who was incredible against the gooners.
At the moment Viduka is a skillfull but unfortunately lazy fat piece of s$%t. And I’ll stick by that even if he scores today, which I doubt he will.
Having said that would like to see Zog on LM and Enrique at LD.
Come on boys 2-1 will do….

  • 6 Andy H // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:18

Why did Viduka come on? We should have kept Smith up top and brought on Emre or Enrique - pushing Zog to the left and Milner onto his natural side. I think that 4-4-2 would have a good balance

  • 7 ObaFan2 // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:18

It’s frustrating , we”ll be playing catch up again if we’re not careful

  • 8 wsq // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:20

how are we playing? are we playing the unreliable % football or big sam’s football?

  • 9 ObaFan2 // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:22

Brummies playing keep-ball again and we are losing the ball to easily at the minute but trying hard

  • 10 wsq // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:23

by the sound of it,, u guys aren’t impressed.guess the tactics not working for the big guy today

  • 11 wsq // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:24

this “notify me of followup comments via email” thingy is annoying me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! why does it tick itself everytime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 12 ObaFan2 // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:27

main thing is we’re still level and when we have our time you never know we might score. Looking a little more organised but still prone to odd mistakes

  • 13 Eve // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:28

    The weather is just horrible.

  • 14 ObaFan2 // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:28

idd wsq but I finnaly got it to stop !!!!! it’s obviously been changed recently

  • 15 Eve // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:29

The games still there for either side to win it, at the moment, it looks like Birmingham might just do it if we don’t wake up.

  • 16 Steve_48 // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:32

Unlucky there Smudger, good show of skill

  • 17 wsq // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:33

man we sound pathetic.. tottenham are more lethal than us, but more vulnerable.

  • 18 Eve // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:33

    On comes Emre for Geremi.

  • 19 wsq // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:34

mid week game might come as an excuse if we lose this

  • 20 ObaFan2 // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:34

    Emre at last

  • 21 Eve // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:34

    Great an excuse.

  • 22 Dragoner // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:36

We simply lack quality…we are putting the effort in but we just dont have players good enough. look at tottenhams squad compared to ours. They have much better technical players.

  • 23 wsq // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:36

haha derby just scored.. any1 care?

  • 24 wsq // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:37

i agree dragoner.. i think that’s part of the problem

  • 25 Steve_48 // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:38

  • 26 wsq // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:38

urgh no wonder big sam made a comment about i wont be afraid of giving the axe just to keep things fresh.. urgh an excuse is coming up

  • 27 Steve_48 // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:39

WTF is Barton doing - that shoulda been a red card - sorry mate but you’re a bloody thug and got off lightly there - he was outpaced and it smacked of desperation

  • 28 Steve_48 // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:40

$64000 question guys - last 10, are we gonna self destruct? I think we’re tiring since Wednesday’s game badly here.

  • 29 toonoholic // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:40

sigh … any signs of scoring another goal ?

  • 30 ObaFan2 // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:40

ur right he’s lucky to be on the pitch…… professional foulf if ever i seen 1

  • 31 Dragoner // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:41

we dont make triangles, Switch sides enough, or do first time passing. On top of that our players need at least 2 or 3 touches everytime. At this level its just NOT good enough. We need to spend money in January. Arshavin, Brown and Matt Taylor would be good signings

  • 32 ObaFan2 // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:42

not yet toonH we had best chances at the end of the 1st half

  • 33 toonoholic // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:43

    blah .. 2 points dropped :@

  • 34 wsq // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:43

well he played the same team from the outset.. if we are complaining about fatigue.. he should’ve started with fresh players. too much respect for a birmingham team playing the same team against arsenal

  • 35 Dragoner // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:44

Also, Look at our midfield players, which of them can you rely on to do a decent cross?? NONE

  • 36 toonoholic // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:44

    respect all teams

BUT DONT FECKING MISS SITTERS :@

  • 37 ObaFan2 // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:46

    ul Oba

  • 38 wsq // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:47

why isn’t emre good enough to start the game, he’s fresh, hasn’t he got the tech ability to deal with a birmingham team..? it’s not arsenal and we’re playing at home

  • 39 toonoholic // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:47

a draw with birmingham is as good as a loss !

  • 40 Eve // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:49

We’re getting frustrated at the moment and a few of our em, firey players..ie..Barton and Smith are just flying in to needless tackles.

Who’s going to get sent off first..my moneys on Barton, he’s got a yellow allready, which really should have been a red.

  • 41 Dragoner // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:49

We are the only team struggling at home today. Even though Aston Villa lost they dominated possession and shots. What hope do we have if we cant beat the likes of birmingham!? and we SHOULD HAVE HAD A PENALTY!!!

  • 42 Steve_48 // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:49

What a load of crap - poor free kick Emre son

  • 43 toonoholic // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:49

more bad boys in newcastle’s team.. a recipe for disaster

  • 48 Eve // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:50

I know ya, maybe the refs making up for the apparent soft one he gave us in the first half.

  • 49 Steve_48 // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:51

  • 66 ObaFan2 // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:57

Result better than the 2nd half play but big well done, 3 points on a miserable cold day on Tyneside

  • 67 Ivan // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:57

    yay!!!

  • 68 Nomis_jade // Dec 8, 2007 at 16:59

on bbc possesion and shots were all in our favour. Why could we have not won more easily? emre needs to be given a chance. How did viduka do?

  • 69 Eve // Dec 8, 2007 at 17:01

2-1, maybe not deserving but 3 points is 3 points.

  • 70 Andy H // Dec 8, 2007 at 17:01

Result today was the only important thing. We got the performance wednesday. Now we need three more achievable wins and a perfomance at Chelsea. Then Big Sam needs to bring more quality to the midfield. Butt is not good enough, Smith should play up front and although I love his effort and enthusiasm Milner has got a lot of work to do on his crossing. But he’d probably do better on the right to be fair.

  • 71 wsq // Dec 8, 2007 at 17:07

we need quality.. our squad’s quality has been on the demise ever since the likes of boumsong came in. milner crossing is nowhere near solano’s quality.
defenders are doing the scoring tsk..

    finally a win!!

  • 72 ToonKing // Dec 8, 2007 at 17:07

we need Owen back fast or get a striker who can put the ball away.

Oba was nerve wrecking today, he really has to do something and start putting the easy ones away, he almost missed the penalty too.

    Viduka was terrible.

Milner was good, but poor crosses again.

Smithy is quite a caracter, he was better in midfield today then up front.

Barton is really getting back to he’s old self.

    Geremi was crap on legs.

Emre was good when he came on.

Rozy was very bad and undecided, reminded me a few time of Titus so that can’t be good

    ….. and Beye was superb.

    that’s about it

  • 73 Eve // Dec 8, 2007 at 17:08

Ya, yay, we beat an average enough side 2-1 after bad defending, a soft penalty and an undeserving goal at the end.
    YAY!!
3 points is 3 points but like that was not good.

  • 74 wsq // Dec 8, 2007 at 17:09

i think milner should forget about the goals for the moment.. more assists boy!! that’s your no.1 job

  • 75 ToonKing // Dec 8, 2007 at 17:13

Eve i wouldn’t say it was undeserving, we most definitely deserved the win, if someone could actually hit the goal that we would have been up at least 3-1 by half time, but it wasn’t pretty……….

  • 76 Obafan // Dec 8, 2007 at 17:14

    BEYE BEYE BEYE BEYE!!! Yes his first goal for the Toon and what an important one, hopefully we are back on the rails now to have a couple of games with good performances. We need to work very hard on a couple of things;
    1. Learn Milner how to cross the ball (IMO not deserved to be MOTM)
    2. Learn how to defend long balls (Roz was awful today and I hope Cacapa or Faye will be back very soon; Taylo was outstanding, well done Steve!!!)
    3. Viduka is fantastic with the ball in his feet but will someone please tell him that he has to do eveyrthing 2 touches quicker
    4. Smith needs to stay upfront, cause in midfield he is not good.
    5. Barton is a walking time bomb, he should have had a red card for an awful challenge on Jerome, but got very lucky.

For the rest the result is the only thing that matters and let’s hope the players get mentally strong after this victory.
When I saw Beye winning a corner and pointing to the fans I sais to myself that he would make a goal and he did… Fantastic!!!!

  • 77 Ross // Dec 8, 2007 at 17:14

how can everyone say those 3 points are undeserved? a weak goal conceeded i admit, it shouldnt have happened, but immediatly after that we plough forward.
oba’s chance at the gk was unlucky, we hit the bar at least twice, and the penalty was a penalty.
first 10 minutes of the second half they push forward, then more of the first half, constant newcastle pressure.
and fair enough it took 90 minutes, but the pressure paid off, and we take the 3 points like we should have.
    get in toon.

  • 78 Kevin // Dec 8, 2007 at 17:19

My MOM: Beye!! Not because of the goal (well, it did help quite a bit) but he was fantastic in defense, pushing up a creating chances.
Taylor played exceptionally well - because he had to cover for the SHITE that was Rozy. Come on lad. Grow a pair and stop pulling away from loose balls!
Milner played like a madman in a good way - as did Barton! Yes the challenge was harsh but he had a good day. Viduka can hang up his boots as far as I’m concerned. Smithy and Oba showed some positives - but didn’t get involved enough. Overall - Good three points, but the players HAVE to run harder and STOP MAKING WEAK PASSES. I couldn’t believe the lack of belief in some of the passes in the middle of the park. Well done today -but a performance like that will NOT get points with teams in the top half of the table.

  • 79 Craig Allen // Dec 8, 2007 at 21:47

The Good - Taylor (effort + 110% passion had them changing tactics to target Roz instead), Zog (tbh good is a step down) , Beye (refreshing)
The Bad - Roz (as the senior of the two should be more decisive i.e. lead!, Viduka (too slow),
The Ugly - Barton* (should take a leaf out of Butt’s book on how to commit a professional foul more subtly if your pace is crap)

    * does seem to be gaining in fitness and confidence though - which is promising.

We look good when we pressing and closing down and poor when we should be pressing and/or closing down - the same ol story of 2 extremes that NUFC are capable of producing.
