Newcastle After Young Brazilian Midfielder

There was a report in the People Sunday newspaper yesterday, that Newcastle United are interested in bringing Brazilian International Diego Ribas da Cunha, otherwise known as Diego, to St. James’ Park.

Diego – Brazilian Attacking Midfielder, currently plays for Werder Bremen

Diego is an attacking midfielder who has 24 caps for Brazil and 3 goals and he is just 22 years old. He was first capped by Brazil four years ago when he was called up for the Copa América 2004 tournament, and he was instrumental in securing the tournament victory for Brazil.

He and Robinho, who is now at Barcelona, were known as a famous duo when they both played for Santos FC. The Brazilian signed for his present club Werder Bremen only last year and has played for them 44 times scoring 17 goals in the Budesliga.

He previously played for FC Santos in Brazil from 2002 until 2004 playing 64 times and scoring 21 goals. He them moved to FC Porto in 2004 and played for them 48 times and scored 4 goals. In total he has played 180 first class games for club and country and scored 45 goals, and as we said he is just 22 years old.

Diego is an attacking midfielder and stands a little over 5’8” tall. He was born in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, and was signed by the São Paulo club, Santos FC, at the age of 12 years old. Diego almost joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2003, at the age of 18, but the move collapsed at the last minute when the Santos FC chairman refused to sell him.

He was brought on as a substitute for Brazil in their friendly match against England on 1st June 2007, and scored their last minute equalizer.

This boy looks like he could be a star player in the future, given he’s already played for Brazil 24 times, and he’s still only 22 years old. He looks like the goalscoring creative midfielder we could definitely use.

Comments very welcome.

This guy really is amazing, but we’d have to pay loads for him and even then the chances of him coming to us are slim, especially with no euro football

We do have a billionaire benefactor. This signing may not be completely beyond the realm of possibility and it does not completely contradict Mort’s recent statements on NUFC’s potential buying policy for January.

    May as well hope.

that cant happen, he just signed new contract and is a very loyal player, so i doubt it, but he would be a great player for us…

eh think of it this way, we’ve got a better chance of signing him than we did signing Ronaldinho last summer. Journalism, if Journalist ever get fired they can always go write science fiction

if only we could sign .. the guy is splendid . To be frank , we need 1-2 players like him , who can conjure magic when required . ( unlike emre).

i guess we should might as well get someone good with dead balls situations

If it costs 15M so what? We spent more on a fragile Owen. (not here to get into Owen debate). I am just saying if hes world class or close to it and normally wouldnt think about coming to NUFC then we are going to have to make a little bit of a splash dont you think? Now I dont know if he is the player to get for us, But I do think Newcastle needs either this window or next to get one player who is recognized the world over and unlike Owen unfortunately is hopefully not injured alot and has a large future ahead of him. The player should also be a midfielder or defender and probably in the middle as well…but whatever I will love this team whether we have Sergio Ramos and Dani Alves or Babayaro and Craig Moore starting in defense. (althought thank God we dont have to see those two in a starting 11 again)

I don’t think we would get him but i would love it if we did. We should probably go to sign players like him but not as good. such as samir nasri (marseille) or toni kroos( bayern munich) , or even a skillful winger like dimitri payet or jesus navas

Lance Davids is on trial, he had a trial a Arsenal when he was 3 so that shows some potential and was touted as the next beckham when he was younger. He is a hard working RB/RW/CDM and ive been told he plays best in the defensve midfielder role. Jog on Butt! Teko Modise has been casing a stri recently, fast right winger. One to look at? Looks quite fragile for the prem, havent seen him play but heard a fair bit about him.

The fact that this story is in the People shows that it is utter rubbish. We won’t get him, he is too highly regarded and he could have pick of any of the top our teams in any European club. Also ED i could be wrong but i think that Robinho is at Real Madrid and not Barca, best to get these things right before you go to press guys. Of course i could be rong and if so many apologies.

There is no possible way that we will ever sign Diego. I have never been so sure of anything in my life. I do agree however, that we do need a creative midfielder, and perhaps another striker as Oba is gone in the African Nations Cup. A forward that I would like to see in black and white is Vagner Love from CSKA, I’ve read on here that some people prefer Jo, but I believe Love to be the superior player, especially if he were partnered with Oba or Owen. As for the midfield, for the price of a “top-class” established player, we could buy at least two younger midfielder prospects who could play immediately, but continue to get better in the future, much like N’Zogbia. This type of strategy has worked wonders for teams like Arsenal (Fabregas, Denilson) and soon ManU (Anderson, Nani). By not attaching themselves to thirty-something has beens, they have been able to buy vast numbers of talented young players, and have been able to give them a chance to play. I would prefer players like Samir Nasri , Piotr Trochowski, or Arshevin to the likes of players like Deco. Of course, a player like Diego does fit this mold, there is just no chance that he would play for the Toon with the likes of Real and Barca knocking on his door.

Hey Ed – what happened to the (page) navigation at the bottom?

As for Diego – as much as I;d like to see him in a NUFC shirt, I think playing champions league would appeal to him more since he’s at Bremen.

Hope the story has truth to it and if so, hope we can convince him.

@JMDuncan – Vagner Love playing wih Oba or Owen?

They are the exact same players + Jo is better, younger, more suited to the prem.

funny as f**k that one day sam is a game from the sack and the next hes going to pinch world class brazilians from under the noses of real madrid.

@ToonKing, wherever you are, you say Banel Nicolita, Stefan Radu, Dorin Goian, Nicolae Dica are not prem standard, what about Crisitian Pulhac as we need a LB, brilliant crosser thee at least.

i was watching werder breman on the box earlier and diego looked very good, but im sure he is def goin to a big club next year,i tink we need a solid defensive midfielder and a good attacking midfielder, the defense will sort itself out.

Taylor is a commanding centre back in the making and i think when capaca comes back they will be a great partnership.enrique and beye should be wing backs and i know faye has played great for sam as a holding midfielder.

Speaking off an attacking mid, damien duff played there a load of times for ireland and was very consistant.Really though who do u drop when he comes back?

Diego is an amazing player, one of the best attacking midfielders around not at a european giant, but i dont think theres any chance of getting him. Worth a shot tho.

If not, im sure Arshavin will be waiting for a phone call :).

not many of the full bakcs are tall, they arent meant to be, not tha they are meant to be at any specific height but generally they are short.

Just think he would be good for the 1.5 mil they want.

But seriously even if we do fork out the money, would he be interested in a move? 1 goal in exactly 4 games is a great return btw.
