It’s looking more and more likely that Wes Brown could move to Newcastle United in the January transfer window.
Wes Brown – positive on a move to Newcastle United
While Chris Mort has said that he doesn’t think signing one or two defenders would improve things much, we believe Sam (and Chris) would jump at the idea of bringing someone in with Premiership experience. As we know Sam was after both Brown and Silvestre in the summer, but Alex Ferguson did not want to lose either player.
That could still be true, but Brown has refused to sign a new 4 year contract offered to him, and his current contract is up in June. So Ferguson may want to get at least a small fee for him in January.
The good news this morning is the Newcastle Journal is reporting that during the summer Brown’s agents gave Newcastle encouraging signs, and even suggested Brown was interested in moving to Newcastle, to join former team mates Nicky Butt and Alan Smith.
During the England get togethers in the summer Michael Owen and Kieron Dyer both discussed a possible move with Wes, and also received encouraging signs. So it’s looking somewhat likely that Wes Brown could turn up at Newcastle in January, and we think that would be a solid signing by Big Sam. Wes can play anywhere across the back four and is an experienced and accomplished defender.
He could very much help to strengthen our defense. It’s only 18 days until the window opens and any moves for players we expect to happen early rather than late, so we don’t have long to wait.
What do you think? Would Wes Brown be a good buy for Newcastle?
Let us know – comments always welcome.

Comment #1Maybe I didn’t like him because he was a Man United player? Although me and my mates often like to diss Rio Ferdinand more
😀
I would say he would be a decent buy and the most important and valuable thing he can offer is his experience.
So, go for it!

Comment #3What WSQ? Butt was a Robson signing and he has been immense this season. Smudge when played up top has been outstanding, are you so stupid you forgot who won nearly 95% of the headers against Arsenal? Brown has undoubted class, his problem has always been injuries!
Brown will be value for money, and he’ll push Beye and our CB’s for competition. At the very least we’ll be able to offload Carr and Ramage too. With Baba gone, we’ll have so much more chaff of our books.
If Riise becomes available, then we have to pounce. We can’t let the likes of Villa or Portsmouth overtake us in buying power or luring top players. Riise would be perfect for LB and LM!

Comment #5He’s hardly a Man U reject wsq, he’s refusing to sign a new contract..
I’ve always thought he was excellent but just kept getting injuries and never actually fulfilled his early promise. Still a top defender though and I would be more than happy if he arrived here in January, especially if he can stay fit..

Comment #9It really rankles with me that England are going to get Capello and Newcaste isnt. I think if we had sold him the Newcastle dream he would have come.
The FA recognise all current English managers are crap! When is Newvastle going to recognise that too???????

Comment #10He wont help the situation, I agree he is no better than others at the club.
All this talk about our defence, no manager has ever sorted this problem out. Constantly changing the back four leads to instability, we need a settled back four and let them play together all season, barring injuries. In my opinion the players we have are capable of this.

Comment #13Black Ceaser…i agree Capello would have been class at the Toon!
he’s a million times better than Big Sam, plus he’s got sh!t more contacts than Sam…and i’m sure he’d of been able to lure some pedigree into the club.

Comment #16Given that a lot of our defenders are off to Africa and with the probability that some will come back injured. Brown would be a good buy if only as cover although I think he would be a good buy anyway.
The only thing about the above article is the the bit about him getting ancouragement from Owen and Dyer. Were they saying how good the sick room is.
Yeah Wes stacks of time off mate, night life aint bad either, ask Babby. 🙂

Comment #17Get him! He’s going cheap and he’s experienced. With Carr leaving we only have Beye as RB, so need cover. Not only that he is versatile and can play all along the back line. Only thing that worries me though, is that most Man U players (Smith excepted) seem to lose their motivation when they leave Old Trafford. Look how long Butt took to sort himself out. Mind you he was playing under the worst bastard manager in our history (and then maybe the second worst) for quite a while,

Comment #19if there are good players out there, who are going to improve your team and are available, then why not go for them. after all. we all want the best for newcastle united. It is evident to see we struggle in defence. There is only one man who nearly did get it sorted and that was robson when we signed woodgate. You look at our defence record when he played. It was top notch and we did not lose many games at all. I am not saying brown/rilse are jonathan woodgate or in the class of him, but what I am saying is these type of players have premiership experience, champions league experience, players allardyce wanted, so if they are available, get them in. They would definately improve our defence. We then would need to concentrate after that on creative midfield players.

Comment #20Toon Goat. I take it you are reffering to Souness ha, yes he was crap like no doubt about it. it was bobby who signed him and to be honest, when he first signed, he was quality like, then he had the confidence problem, and the man u game in the semi final, got shipped out to brum, came back under the rat roeder, played out of his skin and he has not looked back. does not matter, if you buy from man, arsenal, liverpool, you are always going to get quality players in.

Comment #21Capello’s appointment could be very good for the Toon if Shearer is appointed as one of his English coaches.
It would fit perfectly for Shearer to learn his trade from a manager of Capello’s stature. The appointment is for 2 + years with an option to continue after the next World Cup. The timing could be perfect – Shearer (if he succeeds) steps into the Toon in 4 – 5 years.

Comment #22Nobby’s Dad it don’t look as though Shearer will be part of Capello’s set up as it was announced he was bringing in his own lads.
Unless, there is some sort of stipulation from the FA saying there has to be some English input on this side.

Comment #25Brown is no better that what we have unless to are comparing him to Carr. If ManU really wanted him, they’d pay him what he wants. Witness Ronaldo now being payed ££££££.
Brown is half decent back up no more no less.
However we must accept that this is the type of player we will be signing from now on. Until we improve our standing we will not be able to attract the really good players to NUFC.

Comment #26Do not like him, but i dislike any player at Man Utd. I disliked Nicky Butt when he came but i like him now, he is even one of our best consistent performers. So, if Wes Brown is as good, if not better, then great bring him on.

Comment #28even if he is just a utility defender, theres still no denying he’s a good player!
as soon as there is an injury in the man utd back 4, he’s top of the list to step in. becuase he can play anywhere accross the back 4, and is good at doing so.
an above average player with bags of premiership experience, at a decent price, be it a squad or starting 11 player cannot be missed out on. simple as that.

Comment #32sorry i skipped the rest of the comments when i read blac caesar saying he wasnt better than what we’ve got..
brown is a briliant natural defender, i thknk i would pick him ahead of rozenhal for that reason alone, roz is too square and abrupt, wes can move make his body shape right for oncomming attackers so he can quickly adjust or get in position.
i think i t was alex ferguson who said wes was the best natural defender he had ever seen, granted that was a few years back but class doesnt just go, especially natural class
also riise would be amazing

Comment #39micky toon – i’m sorry but you’re comment makes you look a bit of a fool.
Wes Brown has so far this season started 17 times for united this season and come off the bench twice, including starting 2 champions league games and coming on as sub in a third.
Like it or not Machester United are one of the top 10 sides in the world. Any player that starts for them for that many games this season is a very good player, whether they are covering an injured player or not.
Wes Brown would quite possibly not be a guaranteed starter for us either but would provide excellent cover for rb and cb.
I think many people have forgotten that Alex Ferguson, one of the best ever football managers, once described Brown as the most naturally gifted defender he had ever seen. The problem is Brown’s career has been hampered for a number of years by injury but he now seems to have recovered from this and is playing well.
Whether he starts or not for us he can provide premiership, champions league and international experience and at minimum would be excellent cover.

Comment #40all proffesional players are rejects of some team if you are going to look at it that way.
Alan Shearer – Southampton reject, Blackburn reject
Owen – Liverpool reject, real madrid reject.
Oba Martins – Inter Reject
Viduka – Boro reject
unless you have Arsene Wenger as a manager who manages to get 17 year old rookies to play better than their experienced counter-parts.
