Chelsea central midfielder Steve Sidwell has recently been lined up with a return on loan to Reading – the club he left just 6 months ago for the London giants.
Steve Sidwell – loan deal on the cards in January?
At that time Newcastle United were even favorites to sign the 5’10†central midfielder, and we think Glenn Roeder had a verbal commitment from Steve. But when Roeder was sacked, there was a little turmoil at Newcastle, and Sidwell plumped for Chelsea instead.
The midfielder, who is now 25, joined Chelsea on a free transfer in the summer, but that was only after rejecting a new contract to become the highest-paid player in Reading Football Club’s history.
When he joined Chelsea not many pundits thought that was a wise choice by Steve, because of the world-class midfielders Chelsea have at the club. They wondered how many games he’d get, and that’s essentially turned out to be true. Sidwell has started just 6 Premier League games at Stamford Bridge.
Reading manager Steve Coppell is looking to get Steve back on loan in the January transfer window.
But why wouldn’t Steve be a target for Newcastle United? An initial six months loan would seem a good deal on both sides. Newcastle could take a look at him through the end of the season, and Steve could see how he fit in at the Tyneside club, so he wouldn’t be making the same mistake he made plumping for Chelsea.
There’s little down-side for Newcastle and it seems to be a win-win for both the player and Newcastle United. Other clubs interested in Steve appear to be both Sunderland and Portsmouth.
What do you think? Is Steve a good loan signing for Newcastle through the end of the season?
