Sam Wants Two or Three Quality Players

1:44 pm, Wednesday, December 19th, 2007 by Ed Harrison · 67 Comments

Sam Allardyce has said we need two or three top players in January, but only if we can get them then, otherwise we’ll apparently wait until the summer.

andrei-srshavin.jpg

Andrei Arshavin - would be a great acquisition for Newcastle

Big Sam spoke to the Evening Chronicle today:

“We need two or three players and we are on the ball over this.” “But we do need quality players and I just hope we can find them.”

It would appear if the right players are not available in January, Sam may let the window go by, and Newcastle will probably just bring in some of the younger players we have been scouting, while awaiting the opening of the January window.

The fact that Sam says he’s on top of the situation would mean to us he has some good players we have been linked with, such as Andrei Arshavin, the Russian captain, lined up. We would assume if Sam can do a good deal with Zenith, Andrei’s club side, then we would expect the Russian to arrive on Tyneside in January.

Sam’s right about wanting 2 -3 top class players. That’s what we lack right now, players like Emre, who can open up opposing defenses with their sheer class. This is what will separate us from the lower level teams in the Premier league in the future.

We’ll just have to wait and see which players surface in January, but it should be an exciting time for Newcastle fans everywhere.

Here’s some information on Andrei Arshavin:

Andrei was born in May of 1981 in Saint Petersburg, (then called Leningrad) and is a top player for the Russian Premier League team Zenit St. Petersburg. He can play both as a midfielder and as a striker and has played 26 times for Russia scoring 7 goals, since making his debut on May 17, 2002 in a match against Belarus. He has captained the Russian side in their quest for European qualification under manager Guus Hiddink. Arshavin has played for his club side Zenith 229 times and scored 55 goals since making his debut in 2000. Andrei is just short of 5′ 8” tall and is tiger-like in midfield.

Comments very welcome.

i thought we got beat 4-1??? ashavin and muntari would be awesome. but i dont expect muntari coming in. especially that he is at the anc…

  • 5 Tom_Toon // Dec 19, 2007 at 2:18 PM

    we did get beat.

  • 6 Dragoner // Dec 19, 2007 at 2:29 PM

im really annoyed we missed out on castillo, i have been impressed with him for a few years now and i would have love to have got him…oh well at least we can all see his silky skill in the premiership now eh.

I want to see Brown, Arshavin, M.Taylor…and if Tom Toon is right, then maduro in January

maybe if i say it enough sam will buy them ;)

  • 7 Tom_Toon // Dec 19, 2007 at 2:38 PM

the fact is sam will porbs buy some washed up drunkard and teach him how to run into players and thump the ball.

  • 8 Cockney Magpie // Dec 19, 2007 at 2:39 PM

I really think Daniel De Ridder in the right team could be the new Cristiano Ronaldo. He has the same style of play and with the right players around him he could be a great player for us!

  • 9 Chris F // Dec 19, 2007 at 2:41 PM

    but he already signed viduka…

  • 10 Cockney Magpie // Dec 19, 2007 at 2:46 PM

i never new this…. is just looked up Arshavin on Wikipedia and it said on Dec 6th he confirmed his interest in joining Newcastle United? I think i must of missed something ere lol i thought he was just another dream target brought up from somebody on ere!! lol

  • 11 Tom_Toon // Dec 19, 2007 at 2:47 PM

ahaha, he loves him. De Ridder is a great player, wasted at brum but he needs a good run in the side that why he was a disappointment at celta vigo.

  • 12 Ed Harrison // Dec 19, 2007 at 2:55 PM

Cockney Magpie – yes – Arhavin has already said he’s interested in coming to Newcastle United

  • 13 Ed Harrison // Dec 19, 2007 at 2:56 PM

We think he’d be great at Newcastle.

  • 14 Cockney Magpie // Dec 19, 2007 at 2:58 PM

lol yer Tom i do love De Ridder i can proper see our very own Cristiano Ronaldo in him but i just hope Sam sees that aswell and signs him before he does start playing well for Brum because otherwise he could end up at one of the bigger teams and we would have missed our chance! lol

  • 15 Cockney Magpie // Dec 19, 2007 at 3:01 PM

yes Ed i think Arshavin, De Ridder, Matt Taylor, and Wes Brown and we would be sorted and then in the summer try swapping Owen for Ashton

  • 16 Tom_Toon // Dec 19, 2007 at 3:11 PM

  • 17 Tom_Toon // Dec 19, 2007 at 3:12 PM

wouldnt mind seeing a new midfield general, maduro is a good all round midfield but not agressive and intimidating, fellaini would be a good bet but he rejected man utd.

  • 18 Ross // Dec 19, 2007 at 3:13 PM

arshavin would be a quality buy.
all we need to do is approach him! he came out expressed his interest in playing for us!
did he not actually come out with something along the lines of
“should newcastle approach me i would obviously consider the offer” later saying “it would be hard to turn down”
he’s basically begging to pull on the black n white! haha

  • 19 Hadrian // Dec 19, 2007 at 3:27 PM

    need a right winger ,
duff n zoggy on the left , milner and ….germei? on the right .
our captain hasnt cut the mustard for me , and we need an out n out winger anyway .
wonder if gemeri will keep the armband after returning from the african nations? cant see it myself , smudger or barton looks like they will get it , wonder if they speak french? or spanish ? or russian? :P

  • 20 Howie // Dec 19, 2007 at 3:38 PM

arshavin would be brilliant. not sure if it will happen but lets hope so. a versatile ful back would be nice aswell. not sure though who.

  • 21 Tom_Toon // Dec 19, 2007 at 3:42 PM

    g1

  • 22 Cockney Magpie // Dec 19, 2007 at 3:57 PM

Exactly Hadrian we need another right winger and De Ridder is just that!

  • 23 Tom_Toon // Dec 19, 2007 at 4:11 PM

Or Steven Defour, quite similar, but better and younger but has an attitude problem. Captains his club at 20 :)

  • 24 Cockney Magpie // Dec 19, 2007 at 4:16 PM

isn’t he more of an attacking central rather than a right winger? stil would be good though

  • 25 scott 9 // Dec 19, 2007 at 4:17 PM

i would love to sign arshevin i would go crazy if we actually signed him if all we brought in in jan was just arshevin i would still be over the moon i say arshevin diarra and a young right back able to compete for the first team (so he can cover beye when hes in cup of nations and be back up when beye injured)

  • 26 obafemimartins // Dec 19, 2007 at 4:19 PM

not sure if de ridderwould be good cos he got taken off against spurs cos he doesnt want t0 defend.if we are under pressure from other teams he would want off.

  • 27 scott 9 // Dec 19, 2007 at 4:19 PM

muntari would be perfect for the holding rolew but we would never get him

  • 28 Hadji // Dec 19, 2007 at 4:20 PM

I’ve just read that Fiorentina is interested in signing Pablo Ledesma from Boca Juniors for only 2 mill euros.
That is great deal,in 3 years this guy’s gonna worth 20 mill.
We should go for Stevan Jovetic from Partizan Belgrade cause he just loves to be in the black &white shirts.

  • 29 thelongshanks // Dec 19, 2007 at 4:29 PM

    Arshavin,matt taylor and right back.

  • 30 Tom_Toon // Dec 19, 2007 at 4:32 PM

Cockney Magpie, he is rather central but for Belgium he play right winger hes generally a playmaker but drifts to either wing, god passing and crossing ability. Great technique.

  • 31 Cockney Magpie // Dec 19, 2007 at 4:56 PM

yes i think he could be good for Sam to think about if we do not get Arshavin but i think we also need a natural out n out winger who can run with the ball and who can put some good balls in somebody like Keith Gillespie

  • 32 Cockney Magpie // Dec 19, 2007 at 4:57 PM

that where i think De Ridder comes in ;)

  • 33 Kash2 // Dec 19, 2007 at 5:10 PM

Tom_Toon, is Maduro another one of your star players on football manager? Why is it all you guys think any old foreign idiot is going to be able to handle playing for Newcastle and in the Premiership. Shevchenko was a world class striker before he joined Chelsea, now he’s a second rate loser who can’t run. Even Shola is better equipped than Sheva in the EPL, and thats saying something!

  • 34 Cockney Magpie // Dec 19, 2007 at 5:19 PM

Kash2 do ur research before u open ur mouth u twat! Maduro is a quality player and if u actually knew anything about football u would know that in order to get star players to Newcastle at the moment we need to get to them before the big teams do, so dont start mouthing off at people because they are talking about somebody u haven’t heard off!! wat a cock!

  • 35 Cockney Magpie // Dec 19, 2007 at 5:26 PM

also Shevchenko just came into the Prem at the wrong time of his career if he had join chelsea at the peak of his career he could of handled it but he didnt so he cant

  • 36 Tom_Toon // Dec 19, 2007 at 5:33 PM

Kash ive never even played on football manager so i guess he snt my player, i follow world football and generally know a fair bit.

  • 37 Tom_Toon // Dec 19, 2007 at 5:36 PM

i dont really understand this i mention a few names that people have never heard of and give some info on the player and some people lay chicken, im just creating a bit of banter.

  • 38 Toon Barmy // Dec 19, 2007 at 5:37 PM

Ross your right , i remember the arshavin article, i would love to see him in toon colours the guys quality with a bit of pace aswell, he could well be the missing link were looking for as the football were playing at the minute does seem to be by passing our midfield who knows it’s christmas sam may even go daft and play a 442 formation- what do you guys think of defoe, he’s not a happy chap at spurs, no history of injuries that i can think of more reliable than owen, he needs a run of games

  • 39 Tom_Toon // Dec 19, 2007 at 5:42 PM

Defoe is a good player and id welcome him its jsut that english players prices are so inflated even if they are old/pants/ot of favour or whatever.

  • 40 Cockney Magpie // Dec 19, 2007 at 5:47 PM

Toon Barmy – I’d be really happy with defoe but he would more than likely find himself in the same situation.

Tom_Toon – people like Kash are to be ignored. Alot of the players you have mentioned may not have been heard of by many yet but are tipped to achive great things in future so IMO u talk alot of sense.Finding and Capturing the players before they cost £20m+ and end up at Barcelona etc.

  • 41 Keep Oba // Dec 19, 2007 at 6:07 PM

I really like Emre. He is great as a second half sub, but I still want him to start more…he has great one touches and passes that just tear a play open. Not many in our side have that ability. I am sure Sam will be forced to play him more come Christmas and January. February and March should be a nice bonus time with the players we get back.

  • 42 yet_another_indian_toon // Dec 19, 2007 at 6:07 PM

I just hope that he doesnt go and buy Diouf in Jan…

That will be my worstest ever nightmare…

  • 43 JMDuncan // Dec 19, 2007 at 6:08 PM

I agree that Arshevin is a quality player that would well suit our need of a creative midfielder. I also believe that there is a glaring need for a striker since I have been less than impressed by Viduka, or the oft injured Owen. I know it would be a longshot, but I just read that Podolski at Bayern is unsettled and looking for another team. If he would be willing to join a middle of the table Bundesliga team, why not Newcastle? He is young, talented, and experienced at the international level. Like I said, I know it’s a longshot, but it would great to see him in black and white. I was also curious if anyone has heard anything further about Sam pursuing Emanuelson from Ajax?

  • 44 Toon Barmy // Dec 19, 2007 at 6:09 PM

Tom_Toon your spot on. Bent 16 million its a joke, 12 million could do it for defoe tho, would also like to see le sulk hear as he is a guarenteed 20 goals a season man, but it looks like we have no chance with man u & chelsea sniffing around it should of been last summer. but i was dissapointed to read in todays chronicle (alan oliver) that we may not be able to afford 6 million for godjohnsen. i hope this is paper talk.

  • 45 yet_another_indian_toon // Dec 19, 2007 at 6:12 PM

Lucas Podolski! If he joins, it would be absolutely awesome. But he is a striker, isn’t he? We might have to say goodbye to either Owen(yea willdo) or Martins(noways!)

  • 46 Tom_Toon // Dec 19, 2007 at 6:13 PM

    ggg

  • 47 Tom_Toon // Dec 19, 2007 at 6:16 PM

Podolski blows hot and cold and he had been linked to us before (when roeder was in charge), he is a good player mind. Diouf is a good player but agbain hes african thats problem, ino its only 4 weeks but if alot of our first 11 or first 16 are made up of lots of africans then ther eis no continuety

  • 48 Dragoner // Dec 19, 2007 at 6:16 PM

JMDuncan it looks like Eman is going to Tottenham. 19yr old striker/attacking midfielder Roy Beerens would really be good for us, he is still kinda off the radar and we could probably sneak him, he will not go unnoticed for much longer

  • 49 Dragoner // Dec 19, 2007 at 6:32 PM

our biggest problem is finding a defensive midfielder to play with emre in the centre who can create aswel. like flamini or diarra, once we have that and get duff back we will have a good, creative team.

  • 50 Tom_Toon // Dec 19, 2007 at 6:37 PM

Nh Emre n Barton all he way and when/if Arshavin comes stick him on he right of the midfield for 4-4-2 or right of the front 3 for 4-3-3, Barton can be Roy Keane!

  • 51 Tom_Toon // Dec 19, 2007 at 6:38 PM

i did say we needed a new defensive midfield but the thinking behind that was only to get rid of butt, but barton can easy play defensive md and roam forwards occasionally.

  • 52 Dragoner // Dec 19, 2007 at 6:38 PM

i see your point tom, but wouldn’t you prefer a hargeaves to a carrick?

  • 53 Tom_Toon // Dec 19, 2007 at 6:55 PM

depends if you want a defensive player or a passer, if you wanted a mixture id pick gargreaves.

  • 54 JMDuncan // Dec 19, 2007 at 6:57 PM

Dragoner, I agree that Beerens is a quality young player, and would make a fine addition to the team. I think Barton would do a nice job as DM. If we get rid of Butt, I would like to see a player like Appiah arrive for cover. He’s a defensive minded player than can also create and finish, but of course he’s african so that really wouldn’t do us any good until February.

  • 55 Dragoner // Dec 19, 2007 at 7:10 PM

exactly, and Barton is more like Carrick than Hargreaves. I think if Emre is in the centre then we will need a hargreaves style DM like Diarra etc as Emre is not the most physical player

  • 56 Tom_Toon // Dec 19, 2007 at 7:39 PM

Barton is way more like Hargreaves than Carrick. Bartons passing is nowhere as good as his tackling, barton is a dm who likes to get forward the same as Hargreaves.

  • 57 Obafan // Dec 19, 2007 at 8:47 PM

I’m from Belgium and I know Dufour; he is technically a great player (most of the time CAM), but I think that he needs to learn more. Perhaps in a few years he will be good for the EPL, but for now I think it is too early. It will be the best for the player to stay another 2 seasons in Satandard and then move on to a big league.

Arshavin would be fantastic and I believe if we wat him we will get him. Muntari is going to stay at Pompey I think. We should go for another striker also, Martins will be gone to Africa and how long will Owen be fit I would not take any risk by just relying on him.

  • 58 Brisbane Mag // Dec 19, 2007 at 8:58 PM

Arshavin and Wes Brown would be tremendous signings, but at the right price.

No point in buying players if they are not the right price or not what’s needed…….

  • 59 Tom_Toon // Dec 19, 2007 at 9:14 PM

    g2

  • 60 valle // Dec 19, 2007 at 9:15 PM

Bill f… Apology for the booze comment, it was meant as i reply to ur imposters comment to me where he told me to shut up about Geremi because he had a dream of him as a taxi driver lol.

  • 61 Tom_Toon // Dec 19, 2007 at 9:17 PM

obafan what do you think bout Witsel and Fellaini.

  • 62 Bill f // Dec 20, 2007 at 12:29 AM

Ok Valle no problem, Ed has said that is now sorted. Don’t know why he decided to start bad mouthing me.

But if he is reading the blog I just want to say I don’t know how or why I upset you but as I have already said I do not not go out of my way to upset people if I have somehow, then I am truly sorry.

It’s water under the bridge as far as I am concerned.

  • 63 wsq // Dec 20, 2007 at 5:00 AM

This means a condition or a target must have been set for europe this year! Without that I don’t think Mort would loose the strings.

    1 signing top8 2 signings top 7 3 singnings top 6

    agree?

  • 64 valle // Dec 20, 2007 at 7:54 AM

yeah that guy was a prick! what a loser!

  • 65 aaron d // Dec 20, 2007 at 9:57 AM

after Fred of Lyon now apparently

  • 66 Obafan // Dec 20, 2007 at 10:17 AM

    Tom_Toon:
They both might have a very bright future, but ATM they need to learn so much more and I think it is also for them the best to grow first in the Belgian League and then in a few years make a big step into a strong league.

  • 67 Iain // Jan 4, 2008 at 2:44 PM

Would like to see Wes Brown and Matt Taylor in the transfer window to shore up the centre of defence and give us more balance down the left.

Think Podolski would be a great signing given he is sat on the bench at Bayern – good in the floating role between the midfield and strikers with a sweet shot on him. He would also likely be less of a risk temperament wise than some of the Southern European players we’ve been stung with in the past (Viana, Marcelino etc).

Come the summer I’d also be interested in Alan Hutton (Rangers Right Back) and Scott Brown (Celtic)
