Owen Will Not Play On Sunday

Sam Allardyce confirmed today that England star Michael Owen will not return for this weekend’s clash with bottom of the table Derby County at St.James’ Park.

Michael Owen with Big Sam – England striker not playing against Derby

The 28-year-old English striker has been out since injuring a thigh muscle during England’s friendly in Austria last month, and the injury has taken much longer to heal than was first estimated. But we know Michael is not a particularly quick healer.

Sam indicated today that Michael will not be risked against Derby County on Sunday, which is sensible given we have a number of games coming up over the Christmas holidays.

Sam told nufc.co.uk this morning:

“A number of players featured in a practice game on Wednesday but Michael Owen was not one of them,”

“The thigh strain has taken a little longer than we thought to heal and he won’t be back in training until the end of the week.”

“We’d hoped he would be able to play in the practice match and then against Derby, but we’ll just have to be patient with him.”

We’ll really need Michael big time, when Oba Martins goes to play in the Africans Nations Cup, and we hope Michael can stay fit while Oba’s away on International duty.  It would not be good for Michael to get injured again during that period.

Comments very welcome.

Having to rely on Owen to remain fit while Oba is away is a terifying thought. When was the last time Owen played 10 consecutive games??

We will be well under strength in January, with Duke having to carry the load and either, Shola or Owen playing a bit part along side him.

Owen just isnt reliable enough, fitness wise, Shola should be moved on asap and a decent strike force created. We could well be depending on the youngsters again, which may be a good thing all round as they have shown before that they will play their hearts out for the toon!!!!!

yes looking forward to having owen back but we shouldnt need him for the derbby game martins can damage that defence hope we play four four two i am a bit nervous for this game though i have a feeling jewells gonna come and shut up shop and stop us from playing but if the crowd get behind the team like we have being doing we should take all 3 points

i dont think its going to be a hugely bad period when martins leaves, aswell as our defenders.

because we have smith and viduka and owen and strolla to step up i think they will do that just fine.

Interesting to see Sol Cambel and Peter Taylor calling for abuse of players to stop – I’m all for outright abusive language to be curbed but worry where it will all end.

Before you know it we won’t be able to cheer our own teams as it’ll upset the opposition players!

We play Man Utd, Bolton, Arsenal, Boro and possibly Aston Villa whilst Oba’s away – we def need Owen to stay fit for all of these games.

We should beat Bolton and Boro, maybe beat Aston Villa – it’s gonna be tough against Man Utd and Arsenal no matter who is fit

Oh well I hope he’s back for the Wigan game. I live in Yorkshire and every time I come up for a game (about once a month) he seems to be injured!
