Sam Allardyce confirmed today that England star Michael Owen will not return for this weekend’s clash with bottom of the table Derby County at St.James’ Park.
Michael Owen with Big Sam – England striker not playing against Derby
The 28-year-old English striker has been out since injuring a thigh muscle during England’s friendly in Austria last month, and the injury has taken much longer to heal than was first estimated. But we know Michael is not a particularly quick healer.
Sam indicated today that Michael will not be risked against Derby County on Sunday, which is sensible given we have a number of games coming up over the Christmas holidays.
Sam told nufc.co.uk this morning:
“A number of players featured in a practice game on Wednesday but Michael Owen was not one of them,”
“The thigh strain has taken a little longer than we thought to heal and he won’t be back in training until the end of the week.â€
“We’d hoped he would be able to play in the practice match and then against Derby, but we’ll just have to be patient with him.”
We’ll really need Michael big time, when Oba Martins goes to play in the Africans Nations Cup, and we hope Michael can stay fit while Oba’s away on International duty. It would not be good for Michael to get injured again during that period.
Comments very welcome.
