Faye Misses Derby Game

1:05 pm, Thursday, December 20th, 2007 by Ed Harrison · 48 Comments

The question most Newcastle fans have during the week is what the team will be at the weekend. It’s looking like Faye will be missing against Derby on Sunday.

Abdoulaye Faye – will miss game on Sunday

Apparently the plan was to play Faye in the behind-the-scenes friendly game earlier this week with Middlesbrough. But Faye didn’t make it with his calf injury. Instead Sam gave a game to our two youngsters Steven Taylor and David Edgar in central defense. After the game it looks like Steven is definitely available for Sunday.

It’s good that Edgar is getting a game, and we always thought he looked a solid player at the back. The Canadian is still just 20 years-old and we’d like to see him get some games. Maybe Sam can send him out on loan for the rest of the season with a Championship side. He certainly would be a good player in the Championship.

Just who will play in front of Given on Sunday remains to be seen, but we’d like to see a back-line of Beye Cacapa Taylor and Enrique. Then play Milner on the right wing and Zog on the left wing. If we can get that formation, we’ll be in good shape on Sunday.

Comments welcome.

It is important that he is 100% fit; and if he isn’t then just wait 1 more week; ATM we have enough CD (Tayls and Cacapa to start IMO on Sunday) and Roz as cover on the bench.

I hope when Faye comes back that SA gives him a chance as our new CDM.

  • 2 mark // Dec 20, 2007 at 1:22 PM

    AB AB AB AAAAAAB DOULAYE

great buy he was, fantastic defender, lets get him fit again.

  • 3 Valle // Dec 20, 2007 at 1:25 PM

I dont think Edgar is good enough to get a game with our current defenders, but a loan might suit both parties… Tho it hasnt worked out that well for Carroll at Preston :/

  • 4 Ed Harrison // Dec 20, 2007 at 1:25 PM

Obafan – yes we’d like to see Faye play at DM too. He should always be on the team – somewhere. Very strong.

  • 5 Mighty Mouse // Dec 20, 2007 at 1:37 PM

Amazing, we are in week ? and all of us (at least most of us) are still screaming for the starting back 8 that you mention yet to my understanding Sam has not fielded it once this season. It’s almost as if he’s too stubborn or too scared to play Milner and Zogs on the wings, what if the 56k toon army have been right all along and that is actually our strongest line-up? Fancy that!? Come on sam, appease us, please!

  • 6 Mighty Mouse // Dec 20, 2007 at 1:40 PM

Unless of course there is something going on with Enrique that we don’t know about? Anyone got any insider’s knowledge?

He’s looked the grade for me this season I just hope its not a falling out (since that seems to be the circumstance under which he left Spain)

  • 7 mark // Dec 20, 2007 at 1:41 PM

Faye shouldnt be employed as a DM, hes a better defender, this isnt FM2008 you know! btw fellas, Ive got that for Xmas and although ive already played like 10 seasons of it when i had previously…bought…it. anyhooooo why arent my comments registering im bored at work come on Ed.

  • 8 Ed Harrison // Dec 20, 2007 at 1:42 PM

Mark – your comments should be OK… Let me know if you are having problems.

  • 9 Bosck // Dec 20, 2007 at 1:46 PM

mark – i may be wrogn but i think faye was originally signed by allardyce at bolton as a dm.

think taylor/rozenhal alongside cacapa, with faye sat in front of them could be just the defensive unit we have been missing at the toon for years.

  • 10 leo // Dec 20, 2007 at 1:49 PM

lets just gt him fully fit, we should be able 2 cope without him against derby

  • 11 Howie // Dec 20, 2007 at 2:36 PM

    ideally we wud like given,beye,taylor,cacapa,enrique,milner,barton,butt/emre,n’zog,smith,martins.
but we will get given, beye, cacapa, rozenhal,n’zog, butt, barton, geremi, milner, martins, smith.

  • 12 Obafan // Dec 20, 2007 at 3:28 PM

    Enrique is so overrated IMO…

  • 13 Rich // Dec 20, 2007 at 3:42 PM

Howie – the second team is exactly what Sam will choose against Derby we should go for an attacking formation!

    Given
    Beye Cacapa Taylor Enrique
    Milner Barton Emre N Zogbia
    Martins Smith

  • 14 Howie // Dec 20, 2007 at 3:44 PM

obafan enrique might be overated but hes the only natural left back we have and hasnt let us down when he has played so why are we not playin him

  • 15 Tom_Toon // Dec 20, 2007 at 3:57 PM

Rich – That shoould be more or less the team every single week no matter who we play.

  • 16 Adam B // Dec 20, 2007 at 5:13 PM

thats the back four that i would like to see – but me thinks that zog will be at LB again….

  • 17 leo // Dec 20, 2007 at 5:14 PM

i would have faye instead of taylor or cacapa, otherwise, rich’s team is mine also

  • 18 Stamford Toon // Dec 20, 2007 at 5:34 PM

Would rather see Ros than Tayls in defence.
Much better on the ball and better distribution.

  • 19 Hilly // Dec 20, 2007 at 5:37 PM

Rich – I agree with your line-up, but what’s the possibility that it will happen…pretty low. And, since that doesn’t seem to be the line-up week in and week out, what’s BSA’s reasoning behind it? What are we all missing that BSA is seeing?

  • 20 scott 9 // Dec 20, 2007 at 5:42 PM

rich completely agree with your line up spot on im sure every other fan would also like to see that side however nicky butt nevergets dropped

  • 21 scott 9 // Dec 20, 2007 at 5:43 PM

i think we should sign fred arshevin and diarra and a young right back in january

  • 22 scott 9 // Dec 20, 2007 at 5:45 PM

    just imagine this team
    Given
    beye cacapa faye zog
    diarra
    barton
    emre
    fred owen arshevin
this would be a qaulity team we would definatley push for europe

  • 23 Tom_Toon // Dec 20, 2007 at 5:53 PM

Whats this Diarra and Diaby bollocks just get Mavuba, better than Diaby and Diarra and unsettled.

  • 24 Tom_Toon // Dec 20, 2007 at 6:15 PM

Also if you are going to watch Everton v AZ tonight watch for Jenner, could be our answer to a new right winger, very skillful and quick, pretty good crosser aswell.

  • 25 ToonKing // Dec 20, 2007 at 6:15 PM

yeah Mavuba would be great, he’s still young and a brilliant DM and doesn’t really play for Villareal.

    Diarra is shite.

  • 26 scott 9 // Dec 20, 2007 at 6:25 PM

heard of muvuba never seen him play though and diarra is not shite but everyone is entitle to there own opinion but he is far from shite

  • 27 scott 9 // Dec 20, 2007 at 6:30 PM

o and anyways hasnt Mavuba only just signed for villareal there not going to sell someone after just 6 months

  • 28 Tom_Toon // Dec 20, 2007 at 6:36 PM

He wants to leave, he isnt getting played, much like the diarra situation except mavuba is better.

  • 29 Tom_Toon // Dec 20, 2007 at 6:45 PM

Also Lorik Cana is a brilliant dm proper gattuso mark two but he’d get sent off every game :)

  • 30 Sean // Dec 20, 2007 at 7:34 PM

    Look to the future:

    Nasri
    kroos
    payet
    Renato augusto
    Lulinha
    Pato
    Mavuba
    Benzema
    Ben Arfa
    Jenner
    Castro
    Pique
    Mertersacker
    Kompany
    Neur
    Bojan

Theres loads of brilliant young players that not many ppl have heard of – take your pick from them and i’ll be happy :D

  • 31 Sean // Dec 20, 2007 at 7:35 PM

    Oh i forgot Khedira

  • 32 Sean // Dec 20, 2007 at 7:37 PM

P.S – Tom_Toon i agree with u diarra is absolutely crap and i like mavuba

  • 33 Tom_Toon // Dec 20, 2007 at 7:43 PM

I Dont think hes crap but just nowhere near as good as mavuba.

  • 34 Tom_Toon // Dec 20, 2007 at 7:44 PM

Also watch for Dembele tonight considering Jenner is only on the bench.

  • 35 Tom_Toon // Dec 20, 2007 at 7:45 PM

pelle is a big forward, havent seen much but heard good things.

  • 36 Tom_Toon // Dec 20, 2007 at 8:11 PM

Pelle scored one and is having a good game, defintely one to look at if i was sam.

  • 37 Hadrian // Dec 20, 2007 at 8:14 PM

where are the young pedro’s? gazza’s, waddles n shearers?

  • 38 toonoholic // Dec 20, 2007 at 8:18 PM

    reading this blog ….

  • 39 Tom_Toon // Dec 20, 2007 at 9:05 PM

    Jenner is coming on :)

  • 40 James // Dec 20, 2007 at 9:06 PM

Come on Sam, for once pick the team we all want, with Milner and Charlie boy on the wings. LETS ATTACK DERBY UNTIL THEY THROW IN THE WHITE FLAG! It’s time to show the league how good we can be going forward when Big Sam allows us to take the defensive shackles off

  • 41 Tom_Toon // Dec 20, 2007 at 9:50 PM

    h

  • 42 AlexW // Dec 20, 2007 at 11:00 PM

    sean

out of that list of you have mentioned of youngsters, most of them have been heard of and from that list i think we would be able to bring about 5 of them in, the rest will go to teams like barca, real, manky, gooners etc

  • 43 Tom_Toon // Dec 20, 2007 at 11:14 PM

    My thought aswell AlexW

    Jenner
    Mavuba
    Payet

Those are the only ones wie could easily get, maybe Khedira, Castro and Neuer.

  • 44 Whitey // Dec 20, 2007 at 11:42 PM

I must admit that Jenner looked very good in both the matches that we played against them last year

  • 45 Daniel Petersen // Dec 21, 2007 at 5:17 AM

I really like PSG’s David Ngog. He’s young and has a good touch and eye for goal. I think we could pick him up as a replacement for Shola.

  • 46 aaron d // Dec 21, 2007 at 7:46 AM

    Sean, most unlikely.

Nasri – Wanted by Arsenal and high price
kroos – Bayern Munich would let go and leaving them to come to NUFC i don’t think so
    payet – possible
Renato augusto – Possible dependent on work-permit
Lulinha – high asking price and chelsea likely to sign
    Pato – not a chance
    Mavuba – Possible
Benzema – highly unlikely, first choice at Lyon and wanted by Arsenal
Ben Arfa – same as above
Jenner – not sure who he is
    Castro – same as above
Pique – possible but i think would either want to stay at Man U or go back to Spain
    Mertersacker – Possible
Kompany – would demand a high fee, would be a great signing though
Neur – not sure who he is
Bojan – not a chance, only 16/17 in the barcelona first team squad, and a future star of world football, would cost around £20m. and choose Newcastle over Barcelona and probably every club in the world unlikely.

  • 47 aaron d // Dec 21, 2007 at 7:54 AM

Johan Elmander is worth a look at for a new striker, he’s 26 so experianced and still young enough, has played 14 games in the Ligue1 this season and scored 10 goals which is a great scoring record, he wouldn’t be that expensive and wouldn’t demand stupid wages.

  • 48 Scottyhodge // Dec 27, 2007 at 1:37 PM

Edgar is every bit as good as any of our defenders imo. Look how he marked Ronaldo on Jan 1st in his home debut and only his second premiership game. I watched him mark Mendieta and Gong Dook on his own a few months back and he looked tremendous. A loan spell at a championship side for him may not happen as we need cover at the back. If he gets a chance he will show the others he’s every bit as good as them including Taylor, I think they work well together too !!
