Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given, Reading striker Kevin Doyle and Manchester City defender Richard Dunne are the three nominees for the FAI international senior Player-of-the-year award.
Shay Given – best goalkeeper ever to play for Newcastle United
The trio were chosen by a panel selected from the Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland, and the winner will be announced at the awards ceremony in Dublin on Sunday, February 3rd.
During the last year, Shay has had a traumatic time with injuries which started with the terrible injury he sustained at West Ham in September of last year. During the game he clashed with West Ham’s Marlon Harewood and sustained a one-centimeter tear in his bowel, as he slid in for the ball.
At the time, the surgeon who operated on Shay said he had never seen an injury like that through football. He had only seen it happen in car crashes where there has been a huge impact. Shay has missed several games since then with a recurring groin injury thought to be weakened by the initial injury.
But Shay is now back in the Newcastle first team and we hope his injury problems are behind him. He certainly looked in confident form for Newcastle at Craven Cottage last Saturday, when Newcastle pinched the victory with a last minute penalty from Joey Barton.
We believe Given is the best goalkeeper that has ever played for Newcastle United. He has at least 325 appearances for Newcastle in his career, and has represented Ireland on 85 occasions. As well as being a great goalkeeper, Shay is a good lad and along with his wife Jane, does a lot of work in the local Newcastle area for charity.
