Sam Says Butt Magnificent This Season

Sam Allardyce has spoken to the official Newcastle United Web Site of his delight at signing Nicky Butt through to June, 2009, with an option of another year.

Sam Allardyce – so pleased to sign Butt to new contract

Sam believes the experience of Nicky has been invaluable to the team this season.

We reported earlier that the breaking news was that Nicky Butt had signed the new contract earlier this morning. Butt has missed just one game under Big Sam – the Newcastle Sunderland game – and has been one of Newcastle’s better players this season.

Sam talked to Newcastle World TV a short time ago about the signing of the former Manchester United star:

“It’s great news for us and for Nicky.” “We’re glad it’s now sorted because it’s one less thing for the player to think about it.”

“Nicky has been magnificent for us this season and his experience has been invaluable.” “He’s a great player to have in your squad and a terrific example for others to follow.”

“Hopefully now he will continue with that level of performance and help us to finish as high up the table as we possibly can.”

We think Nicky’s a good player although some initial comments from our earlier article suggest not all fans agree with us. What do you think?  Is Nicky worth at least another year at Newcastle?

Let us know, comments welcome, just keep the language fairly decent. Thanks.

Indian: Surely there is room for more than one defence minded player in the squad, perhaps only one defence minded midfielder in the starting 11 but i’d sooner have butt on the pitch than geremi at the minute..

I think Sam goes a bit over the top with his description’s of player’s form sometime’s. Butt has’nt been magnificent, he is never magnificent. Not at this age anyway. Sam’s also said that Rozenhal has been in good form also recentley when he most obviousley has’nt! Not campared to say Beye who has probably been our best defender this season.

wozza – good comment – we didn’t really think Rozehnal looked all that good against Fulham last weekend – but quite a lot said he had a good game. He still looked too hesitant on the ball.

Thats because the guy can actually dribble and pass the ball out of defence unlike the other who lump it up the pitch.

SA’s just publicly backing his players, which is smart. Esp for the new lot coming in from other leagues. The side’s been low on confidence. Slagging your players in the papers would be fairly stupid. These guys are proven players. You don’t get to be the Captain of Lyon by being a steaming pile. Roz was recognized at PSG as having been a valuable player, same thing. He’s clearly got talent, he would start for the Cech team if he was shite.

As far as Butt’s concerned. He’s the highest “bonus” player on the team at the moment. Other people are recognizing his contributions. He looked pretty terrible at FFC, but he wasn’t alone in that respect. Everyone knows that we need someone better, but Butt can still make a contribution to the side.
