Nicky Butt challenges Arsenal’s Gilberto recently at St. James’ Park

Butt’s contract had been set to expire at the end of June but he will now stay at St James’ Park for at least 12 months and insists he was happy to make the commitment to the Magpies.

The defensive midfielder, who was signed by Sir Bobby Robson from Manchester United in the summer of 2004, is excited by the potential of the Newcastle United club and seems confident he can win some silverware – soon.

Butt told Newcastle’s official website on Friday afternoon:

“I only had six months left at the club and I was wanting to get it sorted out, as was the club, and it is nice to get it sorted and just crack on with football now,”

“It gives me 18 months from now. The contract is something I am happy with, and I hope we can go forward with the team and the squad we have got and start challenging for things.”

“It’s potentially a massive club. We should be winning things. We have got a great fan base and a great stadium and some great players – it is just a case of tying it all together and kicking on.”

Sam said on Friday:

“He is a great player to have in your squad and a terrific example for all youngsters to follow.”

“Hopefully he will now continue with the level of performances he has been producing all season.”

Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce has been delighted with Nicky Butt’s consistent displays this season and is very happy at signing the 32-year-old for another year, who is a Sam Allardyce kind of player. Tough and uncompromising and loves to win. We hope Nicky Butt can help us win enough games over the next 18 months so we can indeed end up with some silverware.

That’s what the multitudes of Newcastle United fans all over the world need – just as soon as possible. 😀

cant understand why ppl have been slating him. He’s unspectacular but does a lot off the ball, and yes he has been consistent all season as a destroyer of opponent play.
