Smith and Butt Told To Play Normal Games

Alan Smith and Nicky Butt are the most booked players this season for Newcastle United and each has already picked up 7 yellow cards. Their first 5 saw each of them miss one game through suspension.

Alan Smith – has 7 bookings, the same as Nicky Butt

With injuries and suspensions the last thing Sam wants over the Christmas football fixtures it may be a little surprising that Sam is telling them both to keep getting stuck in. As we know we lose four players to the African Nations Cup next months also, which doesn’t help matters.

Sam said today:

“With four players going away to the African Nations Cup, and tomorrow seeing the start of a spell of four games in 10 or 11 days when we’re likely to pick up injuries, the last thing we want is to have any of our players suspended.”

“We know that Nicky Butt and Alan Smith are on seven bookings each, but they are under instructions to keep playing their normal games.”

“Certainly, there’s no way we are going to ask them to curtail the physical side of their games, which is part and parcel of their make-up. We’ll look at the situation after our next four games.”

Once Smith and Butt get to 10 bookings, they will then need to serve a two match ban, and in all honesty we expect that to happen. But they will lose their edge if they don’t play their natural games, so it’s good that their aggressive play for Newcastle will continue. Maybe Alan can also score his first competitive goal for the club tomorrow.

I don’t rate either of them, so I hope they keep racking up the suspensions too.

how many games ban do they get for 15 yellow cards? i think if they take out their techniques and game they will be not as good players. they need their aggression because they arnt the most gifted of players. still rate both of them though

I think they are both decent squad players but I can’t see them being any part of a winning team. Once Duff plays his way back into the side I wouldn’t mind seeing Barton and N’zogbia in the centre maybe test them out in the reserves first though?

Both are former Manchester United players. Glad they are doing great at Newcastle. Smith is more aggressive compared to Butt and you just can take out their physical approach just because they have 7 yellow cards.
Newcastle need that steel in the middle of the park and both of them are definitely providing it.

The idea of Barton and Nzogbia in the centre is mouthwatering.

Does anyone remember how Nzogbia and the Bling boy played in the centre together? there was great runs from both of them so that makes Barton/Nzogbia a real possibility IMO.

N’zoggy would be awesome on the left side of a three-man midfield.
