Newcastle United After Brazilian Captain

11:29 am, Sunday, December 23rd, 2007 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 32 Comments

We reported earlier that Sam Allardyce was interested in Arsenal’s 22 year-old former Chelsea player Lassana Diarra. It turns out Big Sam also wants to bring Arsenal’s Brazilian midfielder Gilberto Silva to Newcastle.

Gilberto Silva - Newcastle hot on the trail of Brazilian Captain

The classy holding midfielder has been reported to be unhappy this season, after being left out of the team for much of the season. William Gallas has also taken over the Arsenal captaincy from Gilberto.

The 31-year-old’s contract ends in June, 2009 and he has already admitted:

“My situation is not very comfortable on the bench.”

Gilberto joined Arsenal in 2002 and is also wanted by Juventus and Valencia, but reports suggest Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce has put him at the top of his January shopping list, with backing from Chairman Chris Mort. But it will be interesting to see just what kind of fee Arsenal would want for the player, with his contract ending in 18 months.

Gilberto has 59 caps for Brazil and 3 goals and just turned 31 years old in October. In the summer he captained Brazil to their seventh Copa America win and has so far played 159 times for Arsenal, scoring 16 goals. He stands 6’3” tall.

We think Gilberto, with all his experience at Arsenal and in several World Cups with brazil, would be an excellent acquisition at Newcastle. Arsenal supporters will no doubt point out the player has not looked too good recently, but we know Big Sam has a knack of getting the very best out of older, talented players. Gilberto fits the mold and we think he could be a great signing for Newcastle in January, if we can get him.

What do you think?

Comments very welcome.

Getting Gilberto Silva would be an excellent acquisition for Newcastle. We need to add better quality in all areas if we’re to challenge for a European spot this season.

not sure about this one but if he joins i wouldn’t be too dissapointed

  • 3 Nick Dryden // Dec 23, 2007 at 11:58 AM

It is ironic, given Allardyce’s mind numbing, non – footballing, turn off, that he should want a Brazilian who symbolises the best passing game in the world!!!

  • 4 Halliday // Dec 23, 2007 at 11:58 AM

Hope so like. We need an attacking midfielder more though.

  • 5 Ben Wheeler // Dec 23, 2007 at 12:01 PM

He’d be a terrible signing. He’s been awful for Arsenal this season and we’ve got enough defensive midfielders. We’re crying out for a creative midfielder – something Gilberto is not.

  • 6 thelongshanks // Dec 23, 2007 at 12:03 PM

Should we not be looking for better and maybe a bit younger players.I think we need a rock of a defensive mid, even though i think faye could be there.

  • 7 iain // Dec 23, 2007 at 12:06 PM

i agree with ben, it doesnt make no sense.

were supposed to be after diarra the guy whos keeping gilberto out the team at arsenal – also then signing gilberto when he hasnt been any better than geremi this season from what ive seen.

either way i cant see wenger selling both in janaury.

i still dont see where other clubs cast offs like edmilson/gilberto fit into a long term plan for the future either.

  • 8 billy // Dec 23, 2007 at 12:07 PM

rather sam didnt keep going for older players and try to get best out of them . its too short term and you end up getting players in and out and not have established back 4 or midfield then no consistency . just like we have been for years now.

  • 9 Tom_Toon // Dec 23, 2007 at 12:08 PM

Iain couldnt agree more with your last statement – We should try for anyone we want, if they then dont want to com then fair enough because we know they wouldnt be commited, not just the money talking.

  • 10 scott 9 // Dec 23, 2007 at 12:15 PM

well i would love it if we signed gilberto he would go straight into the team at dmf with barton and duff and arshevin on the wings if we got him that would be an exellent midfield and he can also cover at centre half this would be an exellent signing hes a fantastic footballer better option than edmilson in my opinion doubt we will get him though

  • 11 Howie // Dec 23, 2007 at 12:16 PM

wenger wont let him go. i see him as cover for toure during anc. he might play centre back then

  • 12 iain // Dec 23, 2007 at 12:17 PM

as for other transfer rumours from papers, i would bet we get linked to valencias david villa, koeman is having a clearout and villa has already been offered to madrid/chelsea etc but the price has been to steep apparently.

although we have something that might interest them and has done before- oba martins.

wouldnt surprise me if the press dug up the link from the summer about oba going to valancia and rehashed the story as a swap for villa.

  • 13 t-g-w // Dec 23, 2007 at 12:45 PM

I think Gilberto would be a great signing he is a much better passer than any of the DMs we already have!

  • 14 billy // Dec 23, 2007 at 12:54 PM

does anyone think the viduka mccarthy swap would be good?

  • 15 Howie // Dec 23, 2007 at 1:00 PM

yes but billy why would blackburn swap

  • 16 billy // Dec 23, 2007 at 1:05 PM

Howie i just read mccarthy was unhappy and viduka looking for a way out . its prob rubbish but would be good for us if true.

  • 17 scott 9 // Dec 23, 2007 at 2:10 PM

viduka for mcarthy not a good swap at all we already ahve 2 small strikers in owen and martins and we also have smith we dont need mcarthy viduka is quality when we get him fully fit and play to his stregths were a different side with him

  • 18 billy // Dec 23, 2007 at 2:40 PM

scott 9 . six foot and half inch is not too small . are you not fed up of having unfit strikers every week ?

  • 19 Ausgeordie // Dec 23, 2007 at 3:01 PM

Iian you cant get someone with premiership experience and then whinge about them being cast off’s.?? Somone has to get rid of them and we are unlikely to attract people in top teams at the top of their game.

  • 20 scott 9 // Dec 23, 2007 at 3:03 PM

o sorry i thought he was a lot smaller than that but he doesnt really play like a target man though does he he is very similar to owen in the way he plays but yes i suppose owen injuries are ridiculous could be a better option but i definatley would not swap him for widuka duke is qaulity just needs a run of games

  • 21 billy // Dec 23, 2007 at 3:20 PM

agree a fit viduka is quality and i would rather see owen go i dont think he will ever play enough games to justify his wage

  • 22 Edd Case // Dec 23, 2007 at 3:57 PM

    WE DONT NEED MIDS.

    We NEED defenders

  • 23 Leo // Dec 23, 2007 at 11:21 PM

we need wingers and full backs… not a central holding midfielder, maybe a young guy to come into the team gradually

  • 24 Tom_Toon // Dec 23, 2007 at 11:29 PM

Leo – Kankava, would be cheap, a wannabe gattuso with immense passing from deep.

  • 25 andrew // Dec 24, 2007 at 2:18 AM

we need to play our wingers on the wing and our left backs at left back, not keep them on the bench. bringing more and more average players in won’t help the problems.

  • 26 p // Dec 24, 2007 at 7:03 AM

Not really one of the young players we were promised – more a classic BSA signing. Fair enough if it works out… At least he/they have Premiership experience!

Can’t really imagine either of them wanting to come if they watched the Derby disgrace though!!!

  • 27 santa // Dec 24, 2007 at 9:34 AM

ho ho ho, he’s not what we need right now & he’s not exactly that creative, sounds like sams sort of player…

  • 28 Whumpie // Dec 24, 2007 at 12:10 PM

Won’t happen. Just selling newspapers again. Arse won’t let him go, and Mort won’t sanction buying a 31-year-old.

  • 29 chuck // Dec 24, 2007 at 5:57 PM

Sure why does`nt Sam just institute a policy to never sign a player untill he has reached his thirtieth birthday, then with his army of physios rejuvenate them back to superstar levels and while he is at it use all of the computer generated technology we hear about to add a little tactical nous.
Had me believing it , but finalyI see the emperor has no clothes, he is all spin and hoof it up the pitch long ball football ,with little indication of any knowledge of the modern game.
I think we could use a Gus Hiddink or at least use the next few weeks to do a thorough search for the right manager who will bring this club and its army of loyal fans the success deserved .

  • 30 scottish mag // Dec 25, 2007 at 3:04 PM

we dont need another holding midfielder, we need a creative attacking midfielder,

i suggest 21 year old, chilean, matias fernandez of villareal he is brilliant and he has only made 4 first team starts for villareal this season and nine sub appearances, scoring 1 goal and has a number of assists

when he played for colo colo in chile he scored 57 goals in 112 games over 2 years 2004-2006

  • 31 scottish mag // Dec 25, 2007 at 3:10 PM

matias fernandez was voted south american player of the year in 2006 which caloz tevez won the year before,

and with the amount of sub apps i would think that he could possibly want to move for more first team start,

you should check out his skills on youtube and he is also described as this ” an attacking midfielder, a playmaker, fantastic dribbler and a free kick specialist” something we really need.

  • 32 obafemimartins // Dec 26, 2007 at 12:10 PM

we are being linked with lots of different players but big clubs will get them before us. we were linked with Belleti and he went to chelsea. if juventus want to get him we wont have a chance.
