Taylor Urges Pearce To Stay With England Youngsters

We had an earlier story today on why Alan Shearer would not be interested in joining Fabio Capello, the new England manager. Now our own Steven Taylor, the England Under-21 captain, is concerned in case Fabio takes current England Under-21 manager Stuart Pearce to his full England management team.

Steven Taylor – doesn’t want Pearce to leave Under-21 job
Taylor said today:

“It would be a blow for everyone connected with the England Under-21 setup if Stuart Pearce joined the senior backroom team.”“Pearce has transformed England into one of the best sides in Europe at this level and with him in charge there is a real feeling that we can go all the way this time.”

“The players really believe in him and his coaching methods and we can improve on this summer’s showing in Holland where we were only eliminated by the hosts and eventual winners on penalties.”

“It would be a big chance for him and I can appreciate why he would want to work with Capello.”  “But from a purely selfish perspective I hope he stays with the Under 21s and tries to win the European title.”

It’s no secret that Steven and Stuart have a mutual admiration society going between them, and that’s not too surprising. Steven plays in the same guts and glory style as Stuart used to, and Taylor’s performances at the European Under-21 Championships in the summer were outstanding. His performance, particularly in the semi-final defeat against Holland, also stirred the hearts of many an Englishman.

We think Pearce is doing a great job with the England youngsters and it remains to be seen if he will join Capello. But if he doesn’t we have to agree with Steven that England have a good chance of winning the tournament in Sweden. The finals take place there in the summer of 2009, and all current players are qualified to play then.

We also expect Steven to be at the heart of the Newcastle defense this afternoon with Brazilian Cacapa, in a game we are expecting Newcastle to win against Derby County. But as all Newcastle fans are always aware of, we’re not sure which Newcastle team will turn up. But it’s Christmas, so we trust there’ll be a lot of spirit in the side today. 😀
