Duff Return Like Having a New Player

It was just great to see Damien Duff come back for Newcastle yesterday, and he looked good, after being out a full eight months with his ankle injury.

Damien Duff – looked good during his appearance yesterday

That was one of the two good points about yesterday’s game, the other being the fine form displayed and two great goals from Mark Viduka.

It’s a pity Damien came back when the crowd was in shock.  We were still 2-1 down when Duff came on for Nicky Butt after 68 minutes yesterday.  Otherwise Damien would have received the more enthusiastic welcome back he deserved from Newcastle’s very faithful fans. We think Sam will get the very best out of Duff at Newcastle, and we think yesterday’s little outing for Damien was very good for the team, and obviously for the player himself.

Allardyce told the Shields Gazette this morning:

“Damien’s a quality, top drawer Premiership player.” “For me, it’s like having a new player. He’s worked exceptionally hard, and got himself right up there. He got on the pitch, and didn’t look out of place I’m glad to say.”

“It looks good for the future, and I hope he steers clear from injury.”

His return was at least one positive to be drawn from the Derby game, with Newcastle having twice to come from behind to earn a point from the Premier League’s bottom placed side. Sam Allardyce felt Mark Viduka’s two goals should have been enough to earn Newcastle a win and he’s definitely accurate there.

What do you think?

Comments and opinions always welcome.

duffer, owen, carr, ameobi, carrol, are all like new signings. we are underperforming with all the martins, owens , bartons, vidukas, smiths, emres, zogs, milners ..we hav quality all over but there is no point in havin them in u r team if u dont play where they are supposed to be.

Was good to see the Duffer back amongst it, and he looked to have a bit of zip about him. It was only a matter of time before he came on, and i’m happy Sam shown his hand a bit by moving Milner back over to the right. Only time will tell whether that is a long term move though..

He played some good balls when he got on – and i think a more alert striker such as Owen would make better use of that first-time style of service (taking nothing away from the big man though – I’m not ready to eat humble pie yet but he seems to have finally put the finishing boots on..)

also i really believe given the time and if they worked on it in training there is no reason why Martins and Owen cant play together, when they gelled that could be one of the deadliest partners ships in the league and im so worried that the chance of that happenin is being wasted under Sam

people on here dont think about nothing but attack attack attack, where is our proper defensive midfielder? Barton is a box to box player, not a defensive midfielder and he is not good enough defensively to defend the back four by himself. This is why Emre and Barton is not a good central midfield. Barton needs to be dropped and Faye should play alongside emre as he is not as he is as good as butt defensively, he is not as bad as butt when it comes to losing possession, and he makes up for emre’s lack of height in the centre. With our flimsy defence i cant believe people are suggesting we have barton and emre as a partnership in the centre. We need at least one out and out defensive midfielder who you can rely on to protect our defenders.

    Beye Taylor Faye N’zogbia?

    Milner Barton/Butt Emre Duff

    Owen/Martins Smith/Viduka

    Drop Geremi.
All those players in the positions maybe apart from N’zogbia is a team which should win more than they lose, why does big sam a different team than all the fans think we should play? it just doesnt make sence.

Whats the chances he drops Emre again, and plays Geremi and Smith in midfield with milner left wing, something like that. 442 Play the lads in there proper positions. Please, Your not Arsene Wenger!!

What about Zog as CDM? Sounds strange but he’s got experience defended and we know what he can do in an attack. Might get caught out of position too much though. I like the idea of giving Faye a go at it.

We need to find a formation that plays to our strengths (like, uh, 4-4-2) and allows players to be shite on the pitch without killing us. Everybody has off days. That’s a given, what we need is a system that minimizes that. The 4-3-3 we’re playing exacerbates players’ bad performances and we become our own worst enemy. We need to try something different at Wigan, the 4-3-3 isn’t effective.
