A Draw Is Not Good Enough Today

11:37 am, Wednesday, December 26th, 2007 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 10 Comments

Sam Allardyce has rightly admitted to Miles Starforth, Newcastle United writer for the Shields Gazette, that Newcastle’s failure to beat bottom-placed Derby County has heaped more pressure on his side going into the festive period. But we don’t think a draw today will be a good result for the team, we must go for all 3 points, surely.

Sam Allardyce – needs a win against Wigan today

Newcastle are at Wigan Athletic and the JJB Stadium this afternoon – after seemingly being hot favorites to beat Derby County on Sunday to make it three wins in a row.

But Newcastle are just so inconsistent and we’re never sure which team will turn up for the games. However, the good thing is that Newcastle twice came from behind against Derby, and Newcastle could even have won the game in the last 5 minutes, but certainly didn’t deserve to.

Allardyce told the Shields Gazette and Miles Starforth this morning:

“We’ve put a lot of pressure on ourselves, and we didn’t need to do that.” “We’ve been guilty of that a few times this season.”

“Now we have to go there and get a team out on the field that’s going to do it’s best. We’ll not go too gung ho away from home, like we did (against Derby).”

“We’re moving forward undefeated, and if we get it right in the individual and team performance that will hopefully give us the opportunity to go and get a result.

“We’ll make sure the players are ready. We’ll use the squad – that’s going to be important over this four-game period.” “We want to keep this undefeated run going for as long as you can.”

“We’ve got to keep the same energy and level of performance up, and be more ruthless in front of goal and show the same kind of resilience we showed at Fulham.”

We don’t like that comment about not going too gung ho like we did against Derby. If that was gung ho, then what will a dour defensive display look like. Oh yes, we know – like the game against Fulham. :(

Why don’t we go gung ho against Wigan? It’s not like we are playing Arsenal or Manchester United away, and there’s always Titus Bramble at the back, who can make a ghastly mistake at any time. He proved that in the very first minute against Manchester City recently, when he completely mis-kicked the ball after 40 seconds and let Geovanni in to score. It was as big a howler as Titus ever made at St. James’ Park, and that’s saying something, but maybe that’s a little unfair to Titus.

And you usually get what you expect out of things, so we really hope Big Sam is expecting a win today. Sam continued:

“Steve’s gone in there as manager and there’s been an uplift in results.”

“Drawing two and winning one is as good as they’ve done all season, so they’ll have more confidence.”

But we can still win this game Sam, please don’t set us up to think that a draw will be a good result today. It will not be and these are games we should be taking 3 points from. We expect all 3 points today and we should play like we expect that result.

What do you think?

Let us know – comments always welcome.

pfffftt, this is the reason i don’t like pesimists (as sam once called himself), anywho i got revision to do for january exams so i might give it 15 mins, although studying sounds more of an attractive option.

Dont know if the match is being televised, but would probably prefer to stick pins in my eyes than watch another load of crap like the last two games.

BSA’s comments fill me with no confidence that anything is going to change in the near future. We will be very lucky to scrape a draw on current performances though. In reality, we should be going there fully expecting to come back with three points, but I just cant see it.

Perhaps if we play Owen in Goal, with Given and Harper up front – I dont think he has tried that combo yet!!!!!!!!
