Alan Smith was initially handed the skipper’s armband for the 1-0 Boxing Day defeat to Wigan Athletic but Sam Allardyce has today confirmed the appointment is now a permanent one, for the foreseeable future.
Alan Smith – Newcastle United’ new permanent captain?
But we don’t exactly know what that means. Does that mean Alan Smith is now the new Newcastle captain or is he being appointed temporarily because Geremi is leaving for the African nations Cup? Your guess is as good as ours.
Sam certainly left that open to debate as to what his intent is today, and we believe Sam will need to further clarify the situation. The former Bolton manager, has now denied his decision was motivated by Geremi’s imminent departure to the African Cup of Nations, even if his tone suggested otherwise.
Sam told the official Newcastle United web site today:
“We need to establish for a while somebody who can captain the side on a regular basis with the attitude, desire and commitment that Alan shows.â€
“I’d like all the players to be like that”
It seems like this curious decision by Sam Allardyce is motivated by Smith’s ultra committed attitude to every game and the indifferent form of Geremi this season, when he has often been a substitute.
Alan Smith is absolutely delighted by the news and we know he will be determined to lead by example.
“It’s a massive honor for myself,” “Wearing the armband gives you that extra lift…you are the focal point…you’ve got to make sure you’re giving 100% week-in, week-out.”
This quote from Alan was made before the game at Wigan, so that doesn’t give us any new guidance on the matter. As we said before we’re not sure if Alan Smith is now our permanent captain, but we think so.
