Alan Smith Now Newcastle’s Permanent Captain

Alan Smith was initially handed the skipper’s armband for the 1-0 Boxing Day defeat to Wigan Athletic but Sam Allardyce has today confirmed the appointment is now a permanent one, for the foreseeable future.

Alan Smith – Newcastle United’ new permanent captain?

But we don’t exactly know what that means. Does that mean Alan Smith is now the new Newcastle captain or is he being appointed temporarily because Geremi is leaving for the African nations Cup? Your guess is as good as ours.

Sam certainly left that open to debate as to what his intent is today, and we believe Sam will need to further clarify the situation. The former Bolton manager, has now denied his decision was motivated by Geremi’s imminent departure to the African Cup of Nations, even if his tone suggested otherwise.

Sam told the official Newcastle United web site today:

“We need to establish for a while somebody who can captain the side on a regular basis with the attitude, desire and commitment that Alan shows.”

“I’d like all the players to be like that”

It seems like this curious decision by Sam Allardyce is motivated by Smith’s ultra committed attitude to every game and the indifferent form of Geremi this season, when he has often been a substitute.

Alan Smith is absolutely delighted by the news and we know he will be determined to lead by example.

“It’s a massive honor for myself,” “Wearing the armband gives you that extra lift…you are the focal point…you’ve got to make sure you’re giving 100% week-in, week-out.”

This quote from Alan was made before the game at Wigan, so that doesn’t give us any new guidance on the matter. As we said before we’re not sure if Alan Smith is now our permanent captain, but we think so.

What do you think?

Better than Geremi thats for sure, tho i agree that as our captain he should be played up front where he clearly plays best.

Stop going on about Sven, we didn’t want him when he was available and he definitely isn’t coming now.

means he’s practically guarenteed a starting spot , on days with all our strikers fit , smithy will be in midfield .
someone just shoot me now and get it over with .

My thoughts entirely Hadrian. I don’t like seeing Smith playing midfield and he’s hardly a world class striker, but he looks better up front.

When you’ve finished with that gun can you send em down to my house – it’s pretty obvious that the manager and the players he’s brought in don’t give a flying f*ck what the fans think.
If Sams still here next season I’ll save myself some cash and not bother renewing my season ticket

Hadrian. If there’s a spare bullet left gtell him i’ll leave a tenner under my doormat if he does me as well. I’m gutted, Smudge as captain, he’s got great heart but he’s not very good! tactically we’re inept, and thing are looking grim for us for the forseable future. Not happy

This is the biggest joke of all.

What has Smith prooved (except that he is a pain in the *ss) to be our captain???

    – Cacapa: leader of Lyon for years, so why not for us…
    – Beye: deserves it by miles over the other players and also has the experience to captain a team.

It is going from bad to worse with the choices SA makes. He wants the sack, so Mort and Ashley give him the sack (and to encourage SA give him 2 packets of chewing gum and he will be so pleased that he will go out of himself).

so barton has been arrested again for assault, not the sign we had hoped to see. He sits out of the game with an ankle injury and then drives down to liverpool to drink it up and get into a fight. Seems his troubles are in pool and he sould leave them there.
While I know this is a bit of a leap I think Barton should be restricted from spending his free time in Liverpool. I know it sounds harsh but I only wish the Redskins had prevented Sean Taylor from going back to his troubles in Miami.

Smith as Captain. He’s no Terry or Gerrard but the lad works and hopefully the team will follow his example, look i know i’m grasping at straws here but what else can I do? Sam is not going to be sacked this season of that i’m sure,Ashley and Mort won’t fall into the same trap Fat Fred fell into time and time again. I know not many people want Big Sam but i’m afraid he’s going on with it,so we need to bite ll the bullets that are flying around and do what we do best, support our team in it’s darkest hour,we’ve done it many times before so come on lets do it again.

Meh, he’s a good hard worker but he’s not mature enough to be captain IMO anyway. Maybe they should have given it to Beye or Given or someone who doesn’t tackle like he tackles.

Great….this will increase smudges aggression levels so we should get a good 30 minutes every four games…….so that means who’ll captain us the rest of the time?

Not surprised by this at all. I just don’t get it. I like Smiths work ethic, but he’s just too much of a hot head to be the captain. I was hoping it would be Beye or Shay. Though you never know. This might work out.

Hang on Ed!! if you’re putting Smithy’s quote in erm “quotes” then you should have used “honour” not “honor”!! I normally give you latitude when you are speaking in your colonial tongue but when quoting Englishmen I have to insist you spell in English!
My view on the appointment is – not before time, gan on Smithy lead from the front mate.

smith isnt even good enough to make the starting 11. The only thing he seems capable of is picking up a yellow card on a regular basis!

when Smith first joined i thought he would be a good signing and finally get the games he needed to score regularly. But he just hasn’t delivered. I think it may be down to Allardyces style of play and constantly playing out of position, either way, he contributes very little in terms of quality and bucket loads in terms of effort. I suppose the captains role may not be too wasted with him as the captain simply has to be influential. Who is more influential than the hardest worker on the team? Just a thought

Smith as captain is a farce. He should not be in the squad never mind captain. a forward who has not scored a league goal for THREE years, collects yellow cards for fun, cannot stand up while tackling (fouling), is three yards off the pace and creates nothing… this sums up the depths to which this great club has sunk

Scott your right about Park Ji Sung, he is a very good midfielder and quite underrated. But whether Ferguson will let his Asian shirt sales (Ji Sung) leave in January before his other Asian shirt sales (Dong) is a little more known is not likely

I tell you Dudu from CSKA, now that would be a signing, probably on of the best passers ive ever seen, Arshavin is a great creative player he has lots of energy and mkes things happen but Dudu is a playmaker, he can play deep DM or AM hes 6ft 2 big beefy build, perfect signing for us, Id love to see Arshavin but i feel dudu would be more suited and would suit the team he would have around him at the toon better.
