Players Newcastle Need In January

When you look at the current situation it’s hard to believe Chris Mort will let Big Sam bring in too many new players to the club in January.

Chris Mort – interesting how many players he allows in during January

One reason for that is that most of the players Sam brought in during the summer are still acclimatizing to life in the Premier League. And even though our defense is still weak, we now have lots of defenders. However, a problem spot for us is left back. Playing Charles N’Zogbia there is not the answer and his attacking flair has to be used up the field. We also recently paid up the contract of Celestine Babayaro, so we think a new left-back may be on the cards.

We do have Jose Enrique there, and he may need more time to acclimatize to things in a new league and new country. So we’d like to see the signing of an experienced left-back in January. Also, if good experienced defenders with premiership experience are available, then sign them. One such player would be Wes Brown, from Manchester United, if Sir Alex Ferguson will let him move on next month.

With the Joey Barton mess, don’t be surprised if Sam is allowed to bring in a couple of good midfielders. We have followed the Russian captain Andrei Arshavin for at least a couple of months and from what we can tell he would be an excellent buy for the club and he would be only too happy to join Newcastle, by his own admission.. And yesterday there was news we may be after Spanish defensive midfielder David Albelda, who looks a good solid player with leadership skills, which is always good.

It seems that Sam will be allowed to bring in at least one top midfielder as a replacement for Joey Barton, and maybe even a couple if they are are available.

Up front we have lacked a big presence, and we think signing a top class tall striker would beba good move too. Mark Viduka can do the job but is inconsistent and injured far too much. We also think Shola Ameobi’s time is up at the club. Nicholas Anelka or Peter Crouch would be great and that would give us different alternatives for attack. Sam has already managed Anelka at Bolton and the striker thinks highly of the former Bolton manager. We don’t know what Sam thinks of Peter Crouch, but this boy is way under-rated, and will not get many chances at Liverpool.

So at the very least we’d like to see a left back, a top midfielder and a top striker brought in during January. We also expect lots of youngsters to be brought to the club starting with the announcement of Ben Tozer, 17, years-old from Swindon Town, which will probably be announced tomorrow. Just think if we could bring in Wayne Bridge, Wes Brown, Andrei Arshavin and Nicholas Anelka in January – certainly the squad would be vastly improved – but that may be a case of dream on?

What do you think? Which positions need strengthening, and which players would be attractive to the club? Always remembering that this is not always the best time to pick up good talent.

Let us know – comments very welcome.

Very few players available at this time of year will be worth it. I recall us loking for a good few bodies last year and only coming up with “Gooch” on loan. Either we were totally strapped for cash or the right type of player was not available. Maybe a bit of both. I seem to recall a lot of clubs having to get players on loan as the market was very tight.

    An ideal world would see

    a) No money whatsoever for Sam, allowing him to truly display his management skills and get the most out of the talented squad he has at his disposal. We are talking here about a man who’s greatest sucess as a manager came when when at Limerick and he had to go around the pubs cap in hand loooking for fund raising donations to the club. Showing what he truly capable of, should get a lot of people off his back and help win over a large part of the Tyneside public as well. Also shoring up the faith put into him by the current board.

    b) Bread and water in prison for Joey Barton where he contemplates what he is going to do after Newcastle United.

is sam was clever he could make himself some spending money but he would have to ruthless.

say to anyone that wants him they can have owen for 7/8m try chelsea i bet lampard and terry woulndt leave roman alone until owen was there player.

martins/enqrique sell to valencia who are desperate for a lb and a have been after martins before. 20m for the pair cash, thats 13m for martins clause and getting back what we paid for jose.

    so far thats 28m quid.

sell shola and carr and your over 30m quid up.

try get wes brown or benhaim 3m/shorey 7m/barnes or turan or arshavin 8m/1 of gudjohnsen 8m or anelka 12m or saviola ?m and pos another cf (lita/kitson/doyle would make excellent squad players imo) which really from 30m should leave sam plenty of change for another couple of young squad players.

even more desperate for cash sell given get sam to convince jasskaleinen to be no1 here and get him for free from bolton.

if we are going nowhere fast under sam then the last thing he can do imo is have a big clear out and try and turn it round with some more of his own signings.

i wouldnt complain at all if out was given/enrique/martins/carr/owen/shola

as long as the replacements were quality and if possible came with pl experience.

people can say theres no players but if your clever enough they are plenty to be had.

gera – west brom – decent squad player for us.

maduro – ajax – off contract in summer

Here we go again, another transfer window and another bout of BAD BUYS.
It worries me who Sam Allerdyce may bring in. One thing i know for sure, if he brings in another Bolton player thats me finished with them.
I expected better things from Allerdyce, but all you here is he is after this Bolton player and that Bolton player. I am actually surprised he has not put a bid in for Gary Speed, Kevin “the snail” Davis, and that greek player with a name that sounds like a kebab.
When SA first arrived there was talk of decent players coming into toon from Barcelona and that all went flat just like SAs ideas about us going up the table.
Listen to the fans sam, do like MA and get amongst us see how we feel, do not do as Bobby Robson says and stop sitting with us, we pay the wages indirectly to you. If we do not go through the turnstiles you do not get paid.

You gotta say, that (in general) any player who becomes available at this time of year, is available for a reason, not because they feel that it is time to reach out for a new challenge in their careers – and that (in general) precludes them from our shopping list.

But then again why should we – we have some excellent players in the club, but as yet we are just not getting the best out of them -maybe confidence, maybe attitude, maybe the manager is playing them in a style or position that just doesnt suit.

Its the chairmans job to set the strategy for the club, and the managers job to deliver it – he needs to make it clear to Sam what is expected of him – that he can have the 3 years to get it right, but that he better not deliver us Bolton fcking Wanderers at the end of it.

No new players thank you, just fix the ones we have got…..

Ngo-Baheng – since when? I remember a story on him about 3 months ago, but thats all…?

    I would sign Andrei Arshavin.

Try and get Giles Barnes in, and Wes Brown.

I wouldn’t touch Anelka with a barge pole, leave him where he is. Crouch is underrated and under used at Liverpool but he would be perfect for Owen and/or Martins to play off. He is able to hold the ball up and play others in. If the money was right, buy him.

Arshavin looks good when I have seen him play, is better than we have at the moment and he seems keen to come – again, if the price is good, he would be a good buy.

Why is Enrique not playing?? No explanation has been given for his absence. Surely at his age, the pace of the game can’t be too much for him, or why is he here?? Get him into the LB position and free up the Zog for Left Mid.

I agree about the clearout, its overdue for a few players after this seasons performance so far, but not just for the sake of lowering the wages bill to the detriment of the squad; taxi for Mr Ameobi!!!

I would have no problem with Owen leaving, but would prefer him to play off a better player than Duke – if we let him go, Martins is away for 6 weeks, who scores the goals – Smith isnt good enough and should be one of those on the way out. He’s a grafter for sure, but the end result isnt worth the wages.

    Id buy:

Playmaker (deep lying or attacking) – Dudu
Creative Midfielder (who can play right wing) – Arshavin

We are also close to signing Cho Jae-Jin.

    So that would be –

    Cho Jae-Jin

I think all we will do is add one or 2 more youngsters. Faith was put in Sam at the start of the season with the likes of Enrique, Smith and Barton all over £5mil. I would say the board will only buy/ sign players they want for future.

    What you think?

i think we will only sign 2 or 3 players, one will be a creative midfielder, one will be a versaile defender, plays all across the back 4, and one will be a winger/striker, but sam likes arshavin as he can play upfront.

IMO i think its pretty obvious why he isnt playing enrique, hence why i dont complain about it, he cant speak a word of english. Capaca could speak a bit but he also had (when he couldnt speak good english):

    Beye–Capaca–Rozehnal–Zog – All speak french.
Also faye speaks french and we have only just seen capaca and taylor partnership, his english must have improved.

Frankieboy: Ollie Bernard didn’t get a run out as he has a potentially career threatening injury. I believe that he needed the same hip Op that Shola needed and we didn’t put him through it as he was on a short term deal.

    He isn’t currently playing

    RE: Enrique. You’re right a great mystery…

if allardyce had to sell players he would get rid of martins and nzogbia and anyone who is actually a good footballer. he does it all the time with martins. if owen is fit owen will play. he has only scored twice and martins had scored 6 or 7. he would sell his best players because he is mad. he decides to play owen because of what he could do not what he actually will do.

did anyone read the qoute by alan hansen on .com?
he said “If Shearer was ever to manage Newcastle, there will never be a better time to do so because expectations have never been lower.

“When Graeme Souness succeeded Robson, success was measured by Newcastle re-qualifying for the Champions League.

“The difference between the task Alan Shearer might face and the ones Dalglish and Souness encountered is that now nobody would expect Newcastle to compete for a top-four place.

“If Alan pushed the club into sixth or seventh, that would be considered a real achievement compared to the mess they are surrounded by now.

“And, perhaps more critically than anything else, because of who he is and what he represents to Tyneside, Alan Shearer will be given time, which is something far too few Newcastle managers have had.

“Whether Alan wants the job is up to him and whether he is offered it is up to the board.

“But he is an intelligent football man who knows that managing Newcastle will not be about qualifying for the Champions League or winning FA Cups. It will be about giving Newcastle United some self-respect.”

Rob Kirton – totally agree with your first post, I think Sam should be made to earn his money by using what he’s got. It would be advantagous for us to buy a LB, but seeing as “his signing” Enrique obviously isnt good enough, and Zog is the best person for the job then I wouldnt give him money until he drops the stubborn act and buts the natural LB in his place!

Ed – load of old tosh article! At which dream stage where you at when you thought the Chairman was going to give Sam enough money to buy those players lookers at the we’re in at the moment! I’d doubt if there was any money to buy anything other than a stop-gap midfielder (even a loan perhaps?) to cover the runt that’s in prison until he’s either properly locked up, or kicked out the club.

Players are hard to come by at this time of the year so we should look to bid for players who are out of contract in the summer such as Brown or Maduro. Alternatively we can look towards leagues in their close season, such as Russia from which we could pick up Arshavin, Dani Carvalho and Dudu.

Apart from those options we should wait if we must, in order to sigh some quality players with many years ahead of them like Biglia or Turan.

Rob K First i’ve heard about Ollies injuty so thats a fair shout but wots Shola’s excuse ???? But ask the question why add him to the wage bill in first place cos we would have to assume (surely) the club were aware of the injury prior to taking him back on.
Just to clear up, I wasn’t slagging Ollie cos when he did re-sign I thought he was best signing we had made at the time….I was always an Ollie fan.
Hope Enrique’s not got the same career threatening injury as Marcellino had with his dodgy digit.

Not to mention he has stressed his desire to join Arsenal. I also think Carlos Vela is returning to Arsenal from Osasuna in January. He is the best young left winger i have seen in years. Did anyone see what he was doing to the Real Madrid defence? Sergio Ramos couldnt handle him.

When is a player like this going to want to come to us.

This would be fantastic transfer business in January (I will not give an amount because I’ve got no clue what money will be offered or will be available), but I think this might be possible:

    Emanuelson (Ajax Amsterdam)
    Arshavin (St.-Petersburg)
    Fred (Lyon)

Mendez wants to return to Ecuador, because his mother is ill. PSV wants to let him go for a good offer and I think Barcelona Guayaquil (I was in Ecuador last year 😉 ) will be good for him as they want to make an offer and are in talks with PSV, cause they are a good squad. But no chance of getting him in England.

Apparently Benitez is after N’Zogbia and may offer Crouch to us as a sweetner, to be honest as much as I have come to rate Crouch, I for one would rather keep the Zog.
I think a big, experienced striker is a main concern as we are not scoring enough goals.
Unfortunatley there are very few decent players available at this time of year as has been pointed out.
Check out this link (PFA official site its free to register. It contains a search engine off all players (in England) available for transfer etc, not much to shout about in all truth, Allardyce may have his work cut out 🙂
