When you look at the current situation it’s hard to believe Chris Mort will let Big Sam bring in too many new players to the club in January.
Chris Mort – interesting how many players he allows in during January
One reason for that is that most of the players Sam brought in during the summer are still acclimatizing to life in the Premier League. And even though our defense is still weak, we now have lots of defenders. However, a problem spot for us is left back. Playing Charles N’Zogbia there is not the answer and his attacking flair has to be used up the field. We also recently paid up the contract of Celestine Babayaro, so we think a new left-back may be on the cards.
We do have Jose Enrique there, and he may need more time to acclimatize to things in a new league and new country. So we’d like to see the signing of an experienced left-back in January. Also, if good experienced defenders with premiership experience are available, then sign them. One such player would be Wes Brown, from Manchester United, if Sir Alex Ferguson will let him move on next month.
With the Joey Barton mess, don’t be surprised if Sam is allowed to bring in a couple of good midfielders. We have followed the Russian captain Andrei Arshavin for at least a couple of months and from what we can tell he would be an excellent buy for the club and he would be only too happy to join Newcastle, by his own admission.. And yesterday there was news we may be after Spanish defensive midfielder David Albelda, who looks a good solid player with leadership skills, which is always good.
It seems that Sam will be allowed to bring in at least one top midfielder as a replacement for Joey Barton, and maybe even a couple if they are are available.
Up front we have lacked a big presence, and we think signing a top class tall striker would beba good move too. Mark Viduka can do the job but is inconsistent and injured far too much. We also think Shola Ameobi’s time is up at the club. Nicholas Anelka or Peter Crouch would be great and that would give us different alternatives for attack. Sam has already managed Anelka at Bolton and the striker thinks highly of the former Bolton manager. We don’t know what Sam thinks of Peter Crouch, but this boy is way under-rated, and will not get many chances at Liverpool.
So at the very least we’d like to see a left back, a top midfielder and a top striker brought in during January. We also expect lots of youngsters to be brought to the club starting with the announcement of Ben Tozer, 17, years-old from Swindon Town, which will probably be announced tomorrow. Just think if we could bring in Wayne Bridge, Wes Brown, Andrei Arshavin and Nicholas Anelka in January – certainly the squad would be vastly improved – but that may be a case of dream on?
What do you think? Which positions need strengthening, and which players would be attractive to the club? Always remembering that this is not always the best time to pick up good talent.
