Newcastle and England midfielder Joey Barton will be released from jail tonight, after finally being granted bail by a judge at Liverpool Crown Court today.
Joey Barton – granted bail after two previous failed attempts
Barton had twice been refused bail following his arrest in Liverpool on December 27th when he was charged with common assault and affray. But his request to the Crown Court was finally accepted only hours after his second hearing with Liverpool magistrates ended unsuccessfully.
After a private hearing that lasted an hour, Barton’s legal team, led by solicitor Daniel Weed, confirmed the former Manchester City player would leave Liverpool’s Walton Prison on Thursday evening. No conditions of the bail were revealed.
Weed said:
“Mr. Joseph Barton has been granted bail with conditions until he appears at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on January 16.”
Earlier Thursday, Barton’s assault charge was upgraded from a Section 39 common assault to a Section 47 assault occasioning actual bodily harm. It has been alleged Barton and a group of his friends were involved in two separate incidents following a row with another group inside a McDonald’s restaurant in Church Street, Liverpool, last Thursday.
The player’s brother, Andrew Barton, 19, from Widnes, is charged with actual bodily harm and affray and Nadine Wilson, 27, from Huyton, Merseyside, is charged with common assault and affray. They did not appear on Thursday but will stand alongside him in the dock at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, January 16th.
Exactly what happens now with Joey Barton, we don’t know, but we hardly think it appropriate that he starts playing for Newcastle United again. We would expect the club to announce whatever they are going to do shortly.
After all, it’s not very often that you have one of your players get himself put in jail, is it?
Comments welcome.

Comment #46everyone jus needs to calm down.. let us all at least give a chance to BARTON and see what he has to say. though his charge was upgraded, he hasn’t been convicted yet, right?
more than meets the eye.. YES, he WAS involved in the fight. but how and why? could it have been his brother was attacked and BARTON had no choice but only to retaliate? or could it have been he was targeted and verbally abused by those people and his brother and friends took the first punches and then hell broke loose?
there could be so many possibilities, you just can’t sentenced him without giving him the chance to defend his act. even murder suspects will be given a chance to defend in court, why not BARTON??
i’d say wait and find out what, how and why it happen first, before giving your verdict on the chap. i’m sure he really wanted to change his behaviour, and this time, he could well have been a victim instead of an offender..

Comment #47The guy needs help and let’s hope NUFC provide it to him.
He’s a good player but if found guilty deserves to do time in HM prison.
He deserves one last chance as he’s better than most at Newcastle but needs to mend his ways!

Comment #48Fcuk one last chance. He’s had enough last chances already. He’s an angry, nasty little tw@t.
I really think we should be doing everything we can to get shot of him. What sort of message will that be sending out to the rest of the team, let alone the youngsters at the club, if he walks straight back in.
If he ever plays for the club again I for one will boo his every touch from the first to the final whistle – hopefully some of you will join me.

Comment #49Sam gave him his big chance by signing him when nobody else would. And look how he has repayed us all. Twice caught fighting in town, spends time in jail, and smeared food over a fan’s programme that asked him for an autograph when he signed for us.
He’s a thug and always will be – so let’s sell him to West Ham like we did with the others.

Comment #50Barton won’t play until the court case is over at least, he’s staying at the sports clinic for mental disorders – I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets at least a couple of years.
Hopefully we’ve stopped paying his wages as would happen at any other company.
To all those idiots who say we should give him another chance – are you having a laugh, we pay him over 45k a year, what sort of message does this send out to players.
Apart from all of this he’s been absolutely useless for the toon and we played a lot better without him on Wednesday.
If he was in China he’d be shot in the back of the head although I read this morning that they are now going to use lethal injections as thier preferred method of execution!

Comment #51Steve, we pay him £45,000 a WEEK!!! thats £2,340,000 a year. He makes more per week than most fans will make in 2 years.
He should be locked up for 2 or 3 years, just so he begins to understand and appreciate what he threw away. He has had more 2nd chances than most people get in a lifetime; its time he was kicked into touch for a few years, probably for his own good.
He gets absolutely no sympathy from me.

Comment #54Re:posted:The fact is that if some little spotty faced scouse scally walked up to you with his mate, called you a murdering bastard, questioned the mentality of your mother, headbutted your little brother, told you to put the woman you were with on a F***in leash, then drew the biggest smelliest grolly from his throat and gobbed it in the womans hair, what would you do??
ME,personally, i would punch the F***a with as much strength and as hard as i could, right in his big open gob, and at least hope that i knocked a few of his smelly f***in teeth down his throat!!! Anybody who wouldnt do that after so much provocation needs to have a long hard look at themselves!!!

bloody wish it was that easy to drop the toon. Been a Newcastle fan since I was ten, because half my family’s from Sunderland and I wanted to rile them. It kind of stuck. And to think I could be fully blooded Liverpool fan, instead of an interested supporter….

Comment #60Joeys mate – here are the facts
professional footballer on 45k a week unable to play cos he is in the nick after a night on the piss during the season…..thats why he should have been in his bed at 05.30 or are you so deluded in your support of Mr Barton that you cannot accept this. He may or may not have been provoked but a guy with his profile will continue to have problems unless he changes his lifestyle!
he needs to respect himself , his club and the fans who pay his wages. However if you think its all right for him to behave that way and unless he modifies his behaviour i guess you and Joey will have lots of time to get to know each other in some scouse job centre real soon!
