It looks like Newcastle United have made a couple of moves into the transfer market today. One is for Wes Brown and the other is for an unknown player, currently at an English club.

Wes Brown - definite target for Newcastle - but who is our other target?
One bid is for Wes Brown, Manchester United’s utility defender, who is thought to fancy coming to Tyneside, and join up with two of his former team-mates, Alan Smith, who is now club captain and Nicky Butt, who captained the side in Smith’s absence on Wednesday evening.
It is also understood, however, that Newcastle have an additional bid in for a player with an English club. Exactly who that is, we’re not too sure, but it isn’t Tal Ben Haim of Chelsea. Sam was interested in bringing the Israeli to Tyneside on loan for the rest of the season. However, Avram Grant has today turned down that possibility, and now wants £2M for a player Chelsea picked up for nothing in the summer.
Sam may pass on the opportunity to get Ben Haim but a lot will depend on the eventual availability of Wes Brown. If Sam can tie up Brown, we think he may well pass on Ben Haim, at least for now. We don’t have too much information right now on who the other target is, but a definite bid has been placed with his club, by Newcastle United today.
Wes Brown, whose contract expires in June, has turned down a new £50K/week deal at Old Trafford, but it is understood that Newcastle are willing to increase that offer, to have the experienced defender join Newcastle United..
Newcastle have put something into the bank coffers today, following their sale of 21 year-old midfielder Matty Pattison to Norwich City but we cannot believe that can be much more than £1M.
Comments very welcome.

If it’s an English club, then it could be one of any of the following:
1) Dean Ashton
2) Kevin Nolan
3) Matthew Taylor
4) Nicky Shorey
5) Giles Barnes
6) Peter Crouch
7) Pascal Chimbonda
8 ) John Arne Riise
Any thoughts?

5) Giles Barnes - I would bet it’s this young man.
Remember what Mort said about buying players who’d be at the club for a very long time?
We need more quality in midfield and Barnes, though rough around the edges, is quality and can also play down the right, i.e. give Milner a break.
I hope it’s Barnes anyway

Is it wrong that I’m praying its crouchie? We can’t play the Longball with short Alan Smith, Oba Martins, and Michael Owen. Now Crouchie and Duke? That’d be a nice long Ball pairing.

Well Nolan would be good, If our strikers cannot get goals, then we need a midfielder that can. Tim Cahill would be a coup Santa cruz would be ACE that dude is like Ruud Van Nistelrooy. He scores Goals and is very good at it. Nolan, Santa Cruz and Ben Haim. Out Martins because he would fetch a lot of money, certainly enough to add on to what Sam has been given. Brown would be good but I think MAn united would not let him go for less than 5 Mill. I read Chelsea would sell Ben Haim for 2 Mill. Rumor but that would be a bargin if that were true.

Nolan would be a step up from Barton, but surely we’d only go for him if Barton got the axe (or was about to..)
I hope the bid is for Crouch or Matt Taylor, both would be useful additions. I agree with the post on Brown, i don’t think Fergie will let him go so lets move on quickly and get our number 2 or 3 choice before they go too.. (Assuming our scouts did their job and we have a number 2 and 3 choice..)
And finally, I wouldn’t be surprised if fatty gets rid of Emre as well - rumour has it he doesn’t like creativity in his sides..

Nolan joining, well I can kind of handle that. But if Emre goes, whoaaaa that will about do me in. He is the only creative midfielder we have, so if we sell him that’s two creative mids that we need. Sure, he hasn’t been the most consistent or a standout player for us, but he has scored some vital goals and is one of only two players who can deliver a decent ball (zog being the other..)
What a disgrace.

SA is doing great business:
1. he wants Barton to play again
2. Emre is searching a transfer (poss. Monaco)
3. Martins????
4. he is making mystery bids again
5. What about our targets;
- ARSHAVIN?
- DIEGO?
- CARVALHO?
6. We don’t need other defenders such as Brown, we made a bid and they not accpted it; bad luck
This is my opinion on this:
1. Barton should never be able to play again in black n white (he just doesn’t deserve to play in EPL with that attitude; had chances enough); give younger players who deserve it a chance and end his contract
2. Emre can be one of our best players, but he just gets no confidence from the big man
3. The same here; Martins perhaps does not have a good first touch, but he is when full of confidence by far our best striker (better than Owen who has got too many injuries)
4. I hate this mystery; can’t he just do like any other manager, bid for a player without all that nonsense around it
5. Does anybody know something about:
ARSHAVIN
DIEGO
CARVALHO
6. Try to sign quality midfielders and onother good striker (Ashton!!!!) and start playing our best 4 defenders so they can gel together, they never were given the possibility, cause SA never played a few games in a row with the same defence!!!
Every day my disappointment in SA grows.
116 bod // Jan 5, 2008 at 14:12
obafan why do u go on about arshavin diego carvalho how do u know if they are actual targets how do u know ashley is not giving sam the money lets be fair he only got 10mill in the summer when the main transfer business is done so do u really think he is gonna give him 25mill now for your targets people on here need to step back into reality lower your sights this is gonna take time
117 Scotty // Jan 5, 2008 at 14:25
i agree with bod! i’d like to know how many times these people have seen these foreign players play! especially when we all know what its like bringing foreigners into the premiership , its a gamble. like bod says step into reality, lots of fans think its so easy to go out and change things overnight. i find it embarrassing sometimes infact alot of the times at matches the way are fans react or how they know better. Newcastle isnt united at the moment and thats because of the players, staff and the fans. Support the team! Football has changed alot in the past 10 years and its time alot of our fans did aswell!
Geordies!
118 Toon Al // Jan 5, 2008 at 14:47
two words scotty.. football manager lol
119 bod // Jan 5, 2008 at 15:01
well said scotty
120 Hadrian // Jan 5, 2008 at 15:06
bod , we have one hell of an income for a football club due to our support .
we also have a’billionare’ as our owner .
forgive me and my fellow fans if we expect our club to aim above mediocrity , forgive me for wanting my money spent channeled into the clubs squad .
forgive me for not being happy that our transfer targets are the same players sam thought good enough to bring to bolton .
121 Andreas // Jan 5, 2008 at 15:13
Well Toon Al, people who haven’t seen players like Arshavin, Diego and Carvalho (at least on tellie) and understand that these are class players are either blind inbreeds who “reckons all things English are superiour” or they live in a country so obessed with itself that the TV channels doesn’t broadcast a single minute of football from other countries .
122 Andreas // Jan 5, 2008 at 15:21
Scotty (+Bod et al), what exactly did SA achieve with Bolton? A few top-7 finishes and a cup, right? If you think this is great, well good for you but not for NUFC.
I don’t think we should sack managers left, right and centre but we’ll never achieve a thing by being the “new Bolton” (ok, we migth end up in the top-8 within a few years…or we migth get relegated. Notice that we’re only 9 points clear atm). I could live with SA at the helm this season (at least) if he would try to win games and stopped “containing” teams like Derby, Fulham, Scumberland, Wigan and presumably Stoke.
123 bod // Jan 5, 2008 at 15:26
i dont argue that you would like the money spent but thats upto the chairman to decide what u get but if u remember mort informed us that shepherd spent that much he was spending money we still had not got so debt was massive so do u really believe we are gonna go out buy berbatov arshavin diego carvalho van der vart carrick who else ah sod it lets get ronaldinho as for andreas yes ive heard of all them yes i have seen them play and i live in newcasatle and would just like to say well done good coment showing good maturity by the way where u from andreas?
124 bod // Jan 5, 2008 at 15:31
did at any pont did we say it was great no but do u really think we have a god giving right to be higher than 8th or wherever we finish unless you spend 40 to 50 mill or even more u dont get higher so u have to lower your standards until you build a squad worth of challenging
125 Scotty // Jan 5, 2008 at 15:50
lol i said be realistic not comical! i have never once said i accept where we r in the league or im pleased with the way things r goin, neither has bod. like he says we dont have a right to be in the top 5, yes we should be beatin certain teams weve dropped points against, yes we should be doing alot better. so lets do what u think lets go spend millions on these “top class” players since its so easy. tottenham were in a similiar position spent millions and now look at the table. oh and as for lookin at the table and me being “pesimistic”, you say we are 9 points of relegaion zone well we r 8 points off portsmouth who are meant to be avin a gr8 season. Unlike years gone by there are alot of good teams in the league now.
lets be patient and realistic
126 Andreas // Jan 5, 2008 at 15:50
Bod, I am currently exiled and live in Stockholm.
I assume you refer to post 121 when you comment on my maturity. Well, it was a respons to the comment that all on here that mentions some players (not super known in UK) finds them on FM, and aye, it was a quite harsh response.
127 Scotty // Jan 5, 2008 at 15:52
oh…and big sam got bolton into europe, something we are supposed to have “the right” to achieve and have struggled. not sure he was expected to achieve that when he was at bolton
128 Scotty // Jan 5, 2008 at 15:53
.
129 bod // Jan 5, 2008 at 15:57
nicely put scotty spot on
130 tom4toon // Jan 5, 2008 at 16:07
i think we should get Joe Ledley i think he would be mazing. I read it in the news of the world!!last week
wot u guys think about ledley?
131 Hadrian // Jan 5, 2008 at 16:12
bod , scotty , are u lot for real?
we have finished in the top 6 more than any other team outside the top 4 , yes i expect us to be pushing into the top 6-8 .
lets be realistic , we shouldnt be in the position we are now , and we will stay here if we go along with the mediocre attitude you seem to expect us to .
your actually defending the reason we are doing so shit in freddys appointment (sam)
we all know its been downhill since bobby , no reason to accept that tho .
sorry to say the longer we keep doing shite , the lower attendances go’s , the less spent on offical kit , the less income the toon makes and the less we end up spending .
getting real as you call it , sounds more like sinking away into mediocrity to me , and it will be harder to push on then than it is now .
132 a // Jan 5, 2008 at 16:13
i think its kyle lafferty from burnley would love it to be carrick or ashton though
133 Scotty // Jan 5, 2008 at 16:19
its not about accepting being shit its about being realistic. one of the reasons sam is under so much pressure is becasue alot of fans expect us to be challenging the top 4 and just because we arent doing that within the first 6 months all of this negativity comes out which gets passed onto the players. a club like us should be challenging the top 4 but atleast give him time 2 do it, its not as if he inherited a brilliant team or has he had the funds to buy one!
134 Hadrian // Jan 5, 2008 at 16:23
ii cant agree with you , infact its annoying reading the papers seeing suggestings from ignorant southerners that we ‘expect’ to be in the top 4 .
i dont think i know any toon supporter who thinks that .
we just expect progress and to see improvements on the pitch .
lets be honest , most of the games this season have been shocking ,we have looked like a championship side and thats where all the discontent comes from .
if i remember the majority this season just wanted us todo better than last year at first , then when the billionare arrived we maybe thought it would be great if we could challange the top 8 , altho that idea was brought crashing back down to earth a few games into the season .
your as bad as fergie , diff is your one of our own
135 Zero Cool // Jan 5, 2008 at 17:26
Hadrian I agree with you. All I expect from the boys is improvement in our weaker area’s from match to match. Show they’re learning something in training. No TRUE Geordie boy expects NUFC to win every match, or lift the cup every year. We’re so downhearted by failure that we expect our side not to succeed, but to at least try.
Also, rumors are that Manchester and Villa have both inquired about Martins availability. I can’t see us letting him leave (despite his lack of form) unless we get Arshavian.
136 Scotty // Jan 5, 2008 at 17:44
yes well give sam a chance to improve things , weve had a poor half of the season obviously, new manager new squad. weve been betta in recent matches just havent taken chances and had a bit of luck. these ashravin shouts really amuse me, he played well in one game against england n done alright for his club side so lets go and get him…rediculous! to be fair im sure he would be better then martins
137 shaun // Jan 5, 2008 at 17:48
if sam ever sells martins he can fok of back to bolton. he is our best player on his day it would be like the day we sold andy cole to man u !!!
138 Mehzeb // Jan 5, 2008 at 18:13
Most of the people posting about Diego, Van Der Vaart, Vincent Kompany, Michael Carrick, Carvalho, etc. have no basis for stating these coz we have never been linked with any of them, and it’s just a prolonged effect for these posters of playing too much Football Manager, and FIFA.
Sorry. Someone had to state the obvious.
139 scottish mag // Jan 5, 2008 at 19:15
we are tryin to get shevchenko on loan but depends on chelsea gettin anelka or berbatov
nd give sam a chance we have one more point this season than we did after 21 games last and roeder got until the end of the season to attempt to turn it around.
140 john // Jan 5, 2008 at 23:04
toon have been linked with diego and van der vaart never heard about the rest
141 shearyadi // Jan 6, 2008 at 10:05
This is also from the Chronicle:
A mysterious agent is asking for Chris Mort’s phone number to An@l Oliver, and that agent is about to say to Mort that Jose or Lippi is interested to manage United as Sam replacement.
EAT THAT!
