SAM Allardyce makes a total of four changes from the side which was beaten 2-0 by Manchester City at St. James’ Park on Wednesday night.

Michael Owen comes in for his first start since the Tyne-Wear derby draw at Sunderland on 10th November.  Also missing is James Milner (illness) and Habib Beye (hamstring) with Alan Smith and David Rozehnal returning.

Claudio Cacapa is left out and Sam finally gives a first start since November to Jose Enrique. It’s about time. Smith is captain likely to form part of a four-man midfield alongside Nicky Butt, Charles N’Zogbia and Damien Duff.

Emre (ankle) also misses out with Andrew Carroll named as a substitute, having returned from his loan spell at Preston North End.

TEAMS

Stoke City: Steve Simonsen, Andy Wilkinson, Ryan Shawcross, Leon Cort, Carl Dickinson, Liam Lawrence, John Eustace (c), Danny Pugh, Richard Cresswell, Mamady Sidibe, Ricardo Fuller
Subs: Russell Hoult, Gabriel Zakuani, Anthony Pulis, Jon Parkin, Vincent Pericard

Newcastle United: Shay Given, David Rozehnal, Jose Enrique, Abdoulaye Faye, Steven Taylor, Alan Smith (c), Nicky Butt, Charles N’Zogbia, Damien Duff, Mark Viduka, Michael Owen
Subs: Steve Harper, Claudio Cacapa, David Edgar, Andy Carroll, Kazenga LuaLua

Thank God for that…..has Sam finally realised that we were all right in calling for a 4-4-2 with an AM needed in the team instead of two DMs!!

All it takes now is for us to play through midfield rather than hoofing the ball from back to front and losing it every time! I have my fingers crossed that this will be Sam’s thinking for all future games….he may win me over yet!!

Will be good to see one (or more) of either Edgar, Carroll and Lua Lua as well.

Such a shame that we will be missing the width on the right as Smithy is useless in Midfield.

I have a feeling that we will see Duff on the right, Zog on the left with Smith and Butt in midfield. I just hope that Smithy is used as AM instead of sweeper with Butt DM as well.

i like the look of that team to be honest, would have rather had smith up front with owen but maybe his grit in midfield is what we’ll need in this type of away cup game. looking forward to seeing enrique play, i really hope he can now get a good run in the team.

Smith as the attacking midfielder isn’t bad at all. He did play there when at Man U as I can remember, so lets hope he playes as an AM today. Surprised to see Beye left out of the squad though, anyone got an idea why?
All in all our starting XI look strong, and with the prospect of N’Zogbia in midfield we should be able to cope with Stoke.

Why does not Emre get a match under his belt. He should be a starter for every match, we lack creativity!!!

Big Sam Fan – Nigerian FA said Martins could play EITHER FA Cup game OR the Man Utd game…Sam chose Man Utd which is probably sensible. I think that Geremia has gone already.

Robert – I think we’ll see Taylor at RB to cover for injured Beye with Faye in defence with Roz.

Milner is injured – here’s what we think the line up is:

    Given
    Taylor Faye Rozehnal Enrique
    Duff Butt Smith (AM) Zog
    Viduka Owen

    Not too bad a team.

sparetheman – he’s out with “illness”…dont know whether than actually means that he’s on his way out the door (Galatasaray?) – especially with rumours of Nolan being incoming! I hope he genuinelly is ill as I would love to see him stay and get a good run in the team.

Ed, I hope to God you’re right about Smith being AM and not DM….it would be a great game if this is the case.

I think it will be great to see Carroll on later (hopefully Owen can last the match se we can see them link up).

Viduka seems to playing out to the RW quite a bit with Duff drifting in….not sure that’s gonna work today.

Still, Roz seems to be getting forward a bit on the right.

We still seem to be hoofing it the field from defence a lot mind….and Owen has been absent for this first 10 mins….dont think he’s touched the ball yet!

YAIT – Smith seems to be neither one of the other – stuck well and truly in MIDfield. I’d say he’s staying back in general though, as is Butt.
