Newcastle and Bolton After Young Brazilian

There are rumors in Portugal, and that’s all they are at the moment, that Newcastle United may be tracking Brazilian center-back Pedro Tonon Geromel, better known as Geromel.

Pedro Geromel – 6’2″ Brazilian central defender attracting interest

The 22-year-old is believed to have attracted the attention of Bolton Wanderers and two Russian clubs as well as Newcastle. Since Bolton are said to be interested, you have to think that Geromel was on Sam’s radar screen while he was still manager at Bolton.

Vitoria de Guimaraes, who play in the Portuguese Premier League, are currently placed 4th behind Porto, Benfica and Sporting Lisbon. The club is well aware of the interest in Geromel, and are believed to have placed a £2.5M price tag on the young Brazilian. The player himself has claimed he would prefer to remain in Portugal until the end of the season.

But it is thought the Portuguese team is short of money and would jump at any fee over £1.5M.

Geromel has made no secret of the fact he’s love to move to the Premier league:

“The Premier League is wonderful and the chance to play in England will be sensational,”

I am pleased I am being watched but I will only study the situation at the end of the season.”

Pedro is a 6’2” central defender who was born in Sao Paulo in September, 1985 and has played for Vitória Guimaraes in Portugal since 2005. He’s considered one of the best defenders in Portugal and previously played with Desportivo de Chaves, and Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras in his native Brazil.

Comments very welcome.

It seems like the more money Sam spends on one single player, the worse that signing is. Look at Smith & Barton. I made a full comment about this here:

A quote today on a football blog about Anelka

Another move said to be close, although not in my book, is a possible £15m bid from Arsene Wenger for former player Nicolas Anelka (The Mirror). Apparently the north London club are considering a last gasp bid to beat the £14.5m bids already tabled by Chelsea, Newcastle and Man City

Isn’t ‘Breno’ the Brazilian centre back that everyone’s raving on about?

Shame we’re not linked with him like.

With all this talk about signing a defender, is it me or has Edgar got a rough deal? He was always impressive last season and must feel annoyed not to get near the first team back four. He could easily fill in at right back until Beye gets back in 5 games time.

it does seem harsh on edgar but to be honest he did get a chance last season when we probably had our worst defense ever that i can remember. sam did come out and say our youngsters just arent good enough, which sounds harsh but is probably true.
